Thank You! Let’s get ready to go racing. You can sense the excitement as dawn breaks over the new season. The days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, the temperature drops, but fear not, jump racing is there to light up even the most dismal winter’s afternoon. Whilst many of us will be glued to ITV Racing each and every Saturday from now on in, feet up in front of the fire, when Cheltenham is on, there is only one place to be…..and that is here, watching it live. Rug up warm and bring it on!
Best Listen In June this year the BBC series, Sport’s Strangest Crimes told the incredible story of Shergar’s disappearance. The mysterious tale of the 1981 Epsom Derby winner’s kidnap is told by Vanilla Ice, the rapper, actor and TV celebrity. It’s an unexpected pairing, but is unquestionably a great success. It is available for free on BBC Sounds. Best Watch Richard Dreyfuss is best known for the role he played in the movie Jaws however, many racing fans love him for the part he played in the American movie, Let It Ride, the story of a taxi driver who is usually an unsuccessful punter, but on this particular day at the races enjoys a rare golden streak, the kind we all dream about. Made in 1989, it is based on the novel Good Vibes by Jay Cronley and is a fun and easy watch.
I hope you don’t mind, but I am going to take this opportunity to say a few “Thank Yous”.
Firstly, “Thank You” for joining us again as an Annual Member. I can promise you, we’ll see some exciting racing in the coming months, and I very much look forward to sharing that with you. That’s why most people I know join as an annual member and witnessing great sport is one thing I can absolutely guarantee.

Secondly, “Thank You” for your patience.

For reasons galore, the run into this season has been a huge challenge for my hard-working Membership team.
There has been the massive task of transferring memberships over from last season to this. Staff have been unhelpfully pinged by the dreaded NHS app at critical times. There have been changes in personnel with years of experience leaving the team. There have been supplier issues with badges, boxes and car park labels. There have been printer problems. You name it – we’ve had genuine excuse after genuine excuse as we’ve tried to process what our valued members require for the season ahead. It’s been a nightmare few months, but I think we are just about there. For all their hard work, I’d also like publicly express my gratitude to my membership team as well. I can assure you they love the job they do, and they always try their best, even when the phones are ringing off the hook and the emails are rolling in. They have had a difficult time of it the last few months, with many frustrations along the way, but they have never been short on determination and enthusiasm and that’s all I can ask for. One thing that is for certain, when the admin is out the way, we are determined to set out on a mission to really improve the membership experience at Cheltenham. Where this leads us, it is perhaps too early to say, but I can promise you it is of the highest priority to find ways to enhance all that we offer to our valued members.
a unique, alternative stroll through the history of our wonderful sport. The book will be available through the Racing Post bookshop.

Three To Follow courtesy of Dan Skelton
Name In The Stand Night Nurse
Night Nurse had his talents recognised when he was provided with the highest rating of any hurdler, 182, by the wise judges at Timeform. It was an accolade well earned. After a light, but not unsuccessful flat career, he won ten consecutive hurdle races from 1975-1976 which included victories in the Welsh, English and Scottish Champion Hurdle. Trained by Peter Easterby and owned by Reg Spencer he finished his career with a tally of 35 wins, 3 on the level, 19 over hurdles and 13 over chase fences.
Dan Skelton enjoyed an amazing season last year, recording a total of 148 winners, making up a significant percentage of his brother, Harry’s winning rides, who we all know finished the season as Champion jockey. We asked Dan for three horses to follow and he reported back that Allmankind, Protektorat and Third Time Lucki are in terrific shape and expected to get on the board at the highest level, early on in the season. Protektorat finished off his 2020/21 year with an impressive win in the Manifesto Novice Chase at Aintree. The top 2m 4f chases will be his goal. Allmankind finished his season as a winner too when taking out the Future Champions Chase at Ayr, and made a very promising seasonal re-appearance under top weight at Chepstow in the Geoffrey Broomhall Hurdle. Third Time Lucki competed at the highest level with good performances at the Festival and Aintree, but could now be set for a career over the bigger obstacles.
Giddy Up For Good with the RDA & Well Child We are proud to have played a small part in putting some smiles on the faces of Well Child families with a new charitable initiative called Giddy Up For Good. In August Sir AP McCoy was amongst the racing celebrities who helped launch the initial GUFG event which brought together our good friends from the Cotswold RDA, and Well Child, the charity we partnered with for the Gold Cup. Simply put, children selected by Well Child were welcomed to the racecourse to ride some RDA ponies around the parade ring, play some games and enjoy a bite to eat. It was a wonderfully happy occasion, and one we are planning to repeat numerous times throughout the year. Over the course of the season we would love our racecourse members to help support the concept by contemplating a donation or even coming down to help out. Please ask our team for more information.

Membership Pack Pick Ups on Race Day It is in everyone’s best interest to have their membership packs sent to them prior to our opening fixture, however, some members do chose to pick them up. Our office will be open for pack collection from Monday, October 18th to Thursday, October 22nd from 10.30am to 3.30pm but by prior arrangement only. On race day for all your enquiries, and membership pack collection, please head to the Hall of Fame entrance, where you will be directed to the appropriate desk. Membership Extras There are a number of extras you can consider as an Annual Member. Please see the table below for prices but contact us directly if you wish to secure further information.
The Cheltenham and South West Syndicate
Albeit a different experience to pre-pandemic times, The Cheltenham and South West Syndicate members were among the few still able to enjoy some live racing last season, when attending as Owners of our three horses. These horses have changed slightly from last season to this with one retiring from racing and another still resting from a minor injury however, we are very excited to have a couple of new recruits to take into the 2021-22 Season. Marton Abbey is one who is in training with Kim Bailey and was purchased from our very own Tattersalls Cheltenham Sale in April 2020. He had his National Hunt debut at Worcester on 7th October and finished a creditable fifth with plenty to improve on. As well as this, our latest purchase was a chance buy from across the Irish Sea and looks to be a very exciting sort indeed. Formerly in training with E O’Grady, alongside our new trainer Paul Henderson, we purchased 9 year-old Allardyce privately the day before he was due to run, so he is fit and ready to go with Paul so, watch this space!
