2018 Crop UK Export Quality
Harvest Overview
The UK experienced sensational weather for the harvest period of 2018. The hottest and driest June in 32 years saw crops harvested 3 weeks early on average. With only a single day of rain in July, harvest in the South was completed by 21 st August. Taking advantage of the dry conditions, farmers harvested 91% of their crops below 15% moisture with a remarkably low average moisture of 13%. As a result, grain quality has been very high, and disease and toxin levels have been negligible. Most crops yielded slightly below average due to the wet spring, consequent late drilling, and the absence of rain pre- harvest. This will inevitably have an impact on export availability as domestic demand is prioritised. However, this year there are milling wheat cargos available in standard UKP and UKS grades as well as premium quality Group 1 grade. Additionally, there will be a substantial barley export programme.

Milling Wheat
The 2018 harvest experienced an exceptionally high wheat crop quality with 56% of all samples exceeding 80 Kg/HL and most of the samples between 78 – 82 Kg/HL. Due to higher specific weight, protein content in UKP and UKS milling wheat grades has been slightly lower than last year. Given the sunny growing conditions, quality of the protein has been very high, bringing the grades closer to buyer specification. Falling number (Hagberg) results have proved outstanding with over half of the samples reaching 350 seconds and many exceeding 400. Pass rates for milling wheat during Harvest 2018 has been one of the highest on record. Cargos will be available in standard UKP and UKS as well as premium quality Group 1 categories.

Malting Barley Quality
The 2018 malting barley harvest was not without its challenges. The 2018 growing season was very short and although the grain was very low in moisture, yields were below average resulting from the superb summer weather and bright sunshine. Despite the difficult conditions, the barley crop developed well with high marketable quality. Retention was high, and grains were cleaner and brighter than in some years with excellent germinative qualities.
Malting barley 1 kg samples are taken per 100 MT and the laboratory testing methodology is as follows: 1. Moisture, specific weight, Nitrogen parameters 2. Retention over a 2.5 mm sieve 3. Screenings through a 2.2 mm sieve
4. Broken grain count 5. Germination testing
