Namaste!

Dear friends,

WE does transformational work in a partnership that brings the best out of people, ultimately igniting a commitment in the children, parents, teachers, and community leaders in each of the villages they serve. Progress is made at a pace that ensures adoption by each village in a way that is incredibly respectful of the cultural center of gravity, rituals, and the history of the people. The WE model creates a safe and sound community-committed infrastructure that helps people thrive. WE.org people live alongside communities to ensure that better futures are created TOGETHER — with a shared responsibility for building and maintaining the schools, the water systems, the medical services and facilities, and the organic farms. WE knows how to deliver amazingly safe and comfortable trips for individual travelers with accommodations, food, experiences, and a vibe that fosters relaxed exhilaration. Dan and I are excited to introduce our kids to the WE experience on our first trip to India. But these trips are soooooo much more fulfilling if we can celebrate them with friends and family. Hoping that you can please join us — it’s sure to be an incredible trip.

We are excited to share this invitation to join us in India this December. After experiencing our first life changing WE.org trip to Kenya last summer, Dan and I wanted to travel with WE again, but this time to India with friends and family. On our last trip to the Kenyan Maasai we had daily connections with communities that the WE organization serves. It was the most authentic, respectful, and emotionally moving human experience we had ever experienced. Each day was an engaging and interactive cultural experience with new communities and the challenges they face. The generosity of spirit of the people we met was unlike anything we had ever felt. It reminded us of the universal desires we all have for our kids to have the chance to grow and thrive in a world where people share and respect one another. The outpouring of affection that Dan and I felt when we were greeted by the smiling faces of the school kids, grabbing our hands and dancing with us into their villages, proudly showing us their schools and their homes, was transformative. We were all one, building schools, beading in the women’s empowerment centers, eating the organic foods at night grown in the WE community farms. When a mother would hug and dance with me, we would acknowledge that both of us just want the same thing for our kids. Seeing Dan talk to some of the first ever university students in inspirational and yet practical ways was something I’ll never forget. Tears of joy overwhelmed me each and every day we were there.

Love, Andrea, Dan, Max and Aidan

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in India? The weather in Rajasthan is usually hot and dry. Winter has pleasant daytime temperatures with cooler nights, to summer when it is very hot. Monsoon season brings rain during July and August. Q: What time zone is India in? A: India is on IST (India Standard Time), and is 10 or 11 hours ahead of EST (Eastern Standard Time), depending on the time of year. Q: Can I bring a laptop, iPod, expensive camera etc.? A: We suggest traveling as lightly as possible to minimize the risk of damage to or loss of your possessions. For essential items, Araveli Cottages and Tented Camp provides a small safe in every tent and cottage.

Q: Is there filtered water? A: We provide filtered water for our guests to drink. We bring jugs of purified drinking water to the camp and then recycle them after each trip. We recommend bringing along a good, reusable water bottle that you can fill up as you head from our lodge for your day trips to the community. Q: How is the food? A: Participants will have the opportunity to sample a range of traditional Indian and Asian cuisines. Participants enjoy their meals from local restaurants that are regularly visited by ME to WE and at our pre-arranged by ME to WE facilitators as well as on site at Araveli. While staying at Araveli, guests will be treated to the culinary expertise of Chef KK, Araveli’s in-house chef. The majority of the food we will be eating in India is vegetarian, as it is the local custom. Don’t worry—there will be lots of protein options as well as western favorites available at all times.

Q: Will I have access to phone and internet while in India? A: Both phone and email communication is easily accessible in New Delhi. Internet access and phone access is not readily available at Araveli. In Udaipur, you will be able to use your phone if it is activated for international use. Q: Is there a minimum age for the participants going to India? A: No. We welcome guests of all ages! Whether young or old—there is something for everyone. Q: Can I bring gifts for the kids? A: We ask that you do not, as we work in solidarity with our partner communities. Put simply, your gift is your presence. We ask that our trip participants do not bring candy, toys or presents for community members, as we would like to promote fairness for all children. A portion of your trip cost goes to in-country communities to support their basic needs.

Q: What is the electrical voltage in India? A: Electricity will be available in New Delhi and while in Rajasthan. The voltage in India is 230-240V/50Hz. There are 2 types of Indian-style plugs. The first has two circular metal pins while the other has two circular metal pins above a large circular grounding pin. Please make sure to bring a converter with you. Plugs C & D are used in India:

Meg Kettlitz’s story

“2017 what an amazing year! My daughter graduated from high school earning admittance to The University of Toronto and The Lester B Pearson scholarship. 150 year anniversary of Canada. 70 years of Indian independence. And, a Family and Friends WE trip to India! We had an awesome adventure. From all of the sites, the sounds, the smells, the textures, the colors, to the comradeship of everyone we met. Everything was magical! It’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite moment. My personal accomplishment best moment was the water walk. In Kenya in 2016 I wasn’t strong enough to do it. And, while, I suspect my pot wasn’t 100% full, I’m still proud of myself. It also is a reminder of just how hard the women in the village work and how strong they are. From the noise of the monkeys jumping on our tent telling us it was time to wake up to the f lickering of the stars at night telling us good night, it was an amazing family and life experience. One that I wish everyone could experience.” Meg Kettlitz Founders and Friends Trip 2017

Geraldine’s story

“The first visit to Kalthana was such a memorable occasion and one that I will never forget. I have a vivid image in my mind of stepping out of the car and hearing all this beautiful singing and flashes of bright blue down the hill as the children and adults of the Kalthana School greeted us with such hospitality. I was taken by the hand by a shy but bright eyed young boy aged about seven years. I believe his name was Nawara and he and I squatted down on the ground together and tied friendship bands around each other’s wrists, which was a very special moment indeed.” Geraldine Prosser Founders and Friends Trip 2016
