Program

The Baltimore Monthly Meeting of Friends, Stony Run is a large, un- programmed (without pastors or order of service) Quaker Meeting, with individuals and families of all ages, races, sexual orientations, and family makeup. Attendance at a Meeting for Worship can range from less than 10 people to more than 100.Visitors are warmly welcomed. Quakers have a long history of working for equality, social justice, and peace. Mark G. Meadows, jazz piano and vocals Also a composer, instructor, and actor, Meadows is a man on a mission: to cre- ate a unifying sound that breaks through social barriers. The son of a gospel and jazz vocalist, Meadows began his musical odys- sey at the age of three with the gift of a

John Lee, guitar After earning a BFA in Jazz Performance from the Mannes Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at the New School, John Lee has performed with a host of major artists, including Cyro Baptista, Fatouma- ta Diawara, Hassan Hakmoun, Matisyahu,

toy keyboard. He has performed alongside artists including Usher, Cynthia Erivo, Renee Fleming, Kendrick Lamar, Bobby McFerrin, the NSO, Ledisi, Terence Blanchard, andWarren Wolf and has headlined at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blues Alley, and The Kennedy Center. DownBeat magazine awarded Meadows honors for his work, dubbing his song Groovalicious “2 nd Best Pop Rock Composition in North America” in 2007 and his performance of In the Groove “Best Pop Rock Solo in North America” in 2008. He released his fourth album, Be the Change, in 2019. Carroll (CV) Dashiell, drums

and Keller Williams. Also a composer, he is founder of the jam band Caveman, and can be heard on over twenty al- bums as sideman and on five albums as leader. Lee teaches for MusiCorps, a music rehabilitation program for wounded veterans at Walter Reed and serves as adjunct faculty for the Jazz and Commercial Performance Program at Towson University. Eliot Seppa, bass

Also a composer, arranger, and bandleader, Seppa began playing the upright bass at nine years old and the electric bass at 14. He earned a BA and MA from Howard University’s Music Department in Jazz Stud- ies. Equally comfortable playing bass with

Displaying an interest in the drums at an early age, at 14 Dashiell performed at Carnegie Hall as the featured drummer and soloist with the East Carolina Uni- versity Jazz Ensemble. He has performed with The National Symphony Orchestra,

an orchestra, jazz quintet, R&B vocalist, gospel choir, or afrobeat band, Seppa has toured internationally with artists including Raul Midon, Cecily, and The Jogo Project. He leads groups ranging from a trio to a big band, embracing rich harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and organic interplay between band members.

Ashford & Simpson, Patti LaBelle, Cyrus Chestnut, and the Marsalis Family Group. During his time at Howard University, Dashiell was the drummer for the University’s Jazz Ensemble, accompanied the Downbeat award-winning Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and was the principal percussionist and timpianist for theWind Ensemble.

In 2021, the McKim Center and Stony Run Friends Meet- ing will celebrate 200 years since McKim was established as a free school in 1821. The McKim School Building opened in 1833. It sits next to the 1781 Friends Meeting House , Baltimore’s oldest religious building. Today we face new opportu- nities and challenges in the neighborhood.

McKim is undergoing exciting changes:

• We have chosen an Executive Director Designate for the McKim Center . • We are planning major renovations of the McKim Center’s buildings. • We have partnered with the Baltimore Wisdom Project of Wisdom Projects, Inc . to provide COVID-19-appropriate educational services. • We are adjusting our athletic programs to appropriate COVID-19 venues and activities. • The Friends School of Baltimore has reinvigorated its long standing con- nection to McKim by affording faculty member Dr. Amy Schmaljohn time to dedicate her skills to the care and uplift of the McKim Center . Esperanza Center is an immigrant resource center that of- fers hope, compassionate guidance and essential services to people who are new to the U.S. Dedicated staff and volunteers provide services and referrals, ESL education, citizenship classes, healthcare, and low-cost immigration legal services to thousands of immigrants each year. www.catholiccharities-md.org The Intercultural Counseling Connection is a referral network of mental health professionals committed to providing culturally responsive counseling and therapeutic services for asylum seekers, refugees, and other forced migrants in the greater Baltimore area, at no charge to the client. www.interculturalcounseling.org Interfaith Action for Human Rights (IAHR) represents people of faith who live in Virginia, D.C., and Maryland. In addition to the funds raised by this concert for the op- eration of Stony Run Friends Meeting, each year we select nonprofit organizations in which our members are active. They receive an ad in this program, the opportunity to introduce their mission to the audience, and a $1,000 dona- tion. This year’s community partners are The McKim Center and Unified Efforts . The Stony Run community continues to support these previous community partners: Asylee Women Enterprise (AWE) accompanies asylum seekers and survivors of torture on their journey from surviving to thriving. Services include emergency and transitional hous- ing, case management, yoga, therapeutic massage, English instruction, job readiness training, and resource linkage to asylum seekers. www.asyleewomen.org Belize City Friends School , founded in 1994, educates boys and girls, and ministers within the Southside of Belize City. Intersection of Change (formerly Newborn Holistic Ministries) is a community-based nonprofit focused on community development in west Baltimore. The organization is dedicated to providing pro- grams that enrich the economic, social and spiritual lives of those dealing with poverty related issues in the Sandtown-Winchester, Upton and surrounding communities. Work to date has resulted in significant neighborhood revitaliza- tion of the 1900 and 2000 blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue through the full renovation of six previously vacant and dilapidated build- ings, transformation of 18 vacant lots into community green spaces and meditative gardens, creation of a dozen neighborhood murals, and conversion of 96,000 sq./ft. of vacant lots into an urban farm. Strength to Love II: A program that operates an urban farm and serves ex-offenders returning to the community from incarcera- tion. The farm entails 16 greenhouses totaling 96,000 square feet, addresses community “food desert” issues, and offers employment to ex-offenders. About Quakers

Stony Run Friends Meeting belongs to a branch of Quakers that holds an unprogrammed meeting for worship, which means that we have no set prayers, sermons, altars, scripture readings, or hymns. All who are present silently join in prayer and meditation and, if moved by the Divine Spirit, give expression to prayer or speak in the spirit of worship. It is through the weekly meeting for worship that we seek spiritual nourish- ment and inspiration to go back into, and provide service to, the broader society. Commitment to Peace, Equality, and Social Justice

The history of the Religious Society of Friends, whose members are called Friends or Quakers, goes back 350 years. History of the Quakers The Quaker movement began in England during a time of great unrest, much of which was rooted in religious conflict. George Fox (1624 – 1691), the founder of the Quaker movement, had become disenchanted with organized religion. He became a seeker of religious enlightenment and a way to gain direct access to God. He traveled through England and other coun- tries sharing his brand of religion, asking people to live by the Inner Light, and demonstrate their faith by doing good deeds. What do Quakers Believe? To Quakers, the ultimate source of all truth, and therefore of all authority, is the Inner Light. Truth is found by looking within oneself, where one can always find “that of God in everyone.” Quakers observe no dogma, creed, or ritual. However, we are committed to certain beliefs and practices, including respect for one another and all peoples; hope that the search for truth will lead to right action; and trust in the divine element in each person to resist evil and to do good.We understand that one’s outward life needs to bear witness to truth discerned inwardly.We commit to live simply so that others can simply live. We believe the Inner Light is the manifestation of the Divine. The Inner Light is not one’s conscience but that which enlightens one’s conscience.We discern the Inner Light by silently and patiently waiting for the Divine to speak to us during what we call meeting for worship .

We believe that faith must be expressed through action and service to society – to serve society is to serve the Divine. Friends have engaged in social action including the abolitionist move-

ment,WorldWar II relief work, refugee work, and the civil rights movement.We strive to achieve peace, racial equality, gender equality, prison reform, the abolition of capital pun- ishment, and a living wage for all.We condemn war, but not a specific group of people, as we seek to establish a framework for reconciliation.We believe that those who are called enemies are, in fact, friends separated by misunderstanding. The Religious Society of Friends historically belongs to a group of churches advocating for pacifism or biblical nonresistance. Peace churches also include the Church of

the Brethren and Mennonites, including the Amish. Meeting for Worship at Stony Run Friends Meeting
