When the Hamel Rodeo kicked off this year, it did it with a new partner: the Minnesota Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation. On the Thursday, July 7 night of rodeo, $1 from each ticket sold will go towards the foundation. The foundation raises funds for families with kids undergoing cancer treatment.
“The main thing (for the foundation) is to help with travel expenses for families that must travel for their child’s treatment,” Monies raised go towards gift cards for fuel, food and lodging; a portion of the monies raised go to childhood cancer research at the University of Minnesota. “No money leaves the state,” Nearly one hundred percent of funds raised for the Childhood Cancer Foundation go directly to benefit those in need; there is very little overhead expense.

Some say that rodeo was born in 1869 when two groups of cowboys from neighboring ranches met in Deer Trail, Colo., to settle an argument over who was the best at performing everyday cowboy tasks, including breaking wild horses to ride for ranch work – a com mon cowboy task that evolved into rodeo’s saddle bronc riding event. That informal gathering is considered by many to be the first rodeo – the beginning of a true American sport, based on the needs and customs of those who settled the great American West. Spanish-speaking cowboys, vaqueros, and the more recently arrived cowboys from the eastern part of the country contributed different skills and techniques to the cowboy toolbox. Breaking horses for their own use was just one part of a cowboy’s job. Capturing calves and full-grown cattle for branding, medical attention and sale required finely honed roping and riding skills on the sprawling, often inhospitable terrain of frontier ranches – skills that were tested and contested in events that led to today’s tie-down roping, team roping and steer roping. Today’s professional rodeo cowboy is a bit different from his predecessor from the 1800s, although the traditional ideals of sportsmanship, showmanship and mentorship are still valued by today’s competitors. A cowboy’s standing in the sport of rodeo still depends on his skill with a rope or his ability to ride a bucking animal, his toughness in the face of setbacks, and his gratitude and humility about the success he achieves. His standing in the rodeo community still depends on his adherence to the cowboy code, which dictates that a man helps his fellow competitors even when they are competing for the same paycheck and teach what they know to younger cowboys. Yet some aspects of rodeo have changed since those early days. Many professional cowboys travel in comfortable trucks or custom-made rigs, or they fly from one rodeo to another by commercial airline or charter plane. Market- ing and business acumen have become as crucial as roping, wrestling or riding skills as contestants compete for more money than ever before. Whether a PRCA member spends more than 200 days a year on the road in hopes to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo or works another job and only competes in regional rodeos on the weekends – he is likely to take his wife and children along whenever possible, helping to keep the sport close to its family-oriented roots Fans keep up to date with their favorite athletes by subscribing to the PRCA’s ProRodeo Sports News magazine, watching livestreamed PRCA events, logging on to www.ProRodeo.com and following the PRCA’s social media platforms.

Rider Kiesner & Bethany Iles Rodeo Entertainment In the tradition of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Rider Kiesner and his partner Bethany Iles entertain with trick riding, trick roping, whip cracking, and gun slinging! Witness and an exhibition of the Western arts heralding back to the old west days of Annie Oakley, Will Rogers,
and the glory days of TV when westerns were king. Kiesner and Iles are well-known for their work. Kiesner has performed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, pro rodeo’s world championship, seven times, and has done his act in all fifty states and fifteen countries. He’s performed at Cavalia, and last year, he and Iles did their act at a NASCAR show in front of 130,000 fans. Their act is all western: Kiesner trick ropes and does gun spinning tricks, standing on a specially designed plat-
form on his truck, doing such rope tricks as the butterfly, the wedding ring (with 70 feet of rope) and the Texas skip. Iles rides around the arena, doing dangerous yet beautiful trick riding stunts like the suicide drag, the shoulder stand, the liberty stand, the full fender drag, the stroud layout, and one of her newest, the cartwheel vault. He’s no stranger to the art of western talent. When he was nine years old, he got a Will Rogers trick roping kit for Christmas and taught himself to rope. His entire family, including younger brother Roper and parents Philip and Julie, took their show on the road. When Rider turned 18, he got his PRCA card and began his solo career.
Iles grew up with a mother who was terrified of horses, but when Iles saw trick riding, she and her twin sister knew that’s what they wanted to do. “My mom, being a good mom, signed us up to take rid- ing lessons, and within a month, we had three head of horses,” Iles said. The sisters made their own trick riding equipment and hung off horses, “which is totally not safe,” she laughed. Their riding instructor hosted a trick riding clinic, which the girls attended, “and a year later, we had learned enough to do local shows,” Iles said. The two of them paired up in 2018 and have performed at rodeos across the nation. Kiesner is a four-time world champion trick roper and a two-time world champion gun spinner, and the couple is the 2020 PRCA Specialty Act of the Year.

The man behind the microphone at the Hamel Rodeo. Sheridan loves every aspect of rodeo, in part because of the athleticism it requires of the contestants and their horses, but he loves the openings the most. He works to grab the attention of the fans. “I can see the faces and reactions from the people in the grandstands,” he said. “You can see their excitement and anticipation. To me, that’s the greatest. When the crowd is with you, it’s a real relationship.” He also knows that he’s part of the rodeo team that is there to entertain fans. “It’s an honor to bring rodeo to fans,” he said. “These people are trusting us, the clown, the stock contractor, and the rodeo personnel, to provide a quality memorable fan experience for them and their children. I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Thank you for attending the 41st ANNUAL HAMEL RODEO! We would like to take this opportunity and let you know just how much it means to this community when you join us for the rodeo. WHO PUTS ON THE HAMEL RODEO? The Hamel Rodeo is a non-profit fundraiser organized and managed by volunteers. We have no paid staff in order to maximize the financial benefit to our community. When you buy a ticket you are witnessing top notch Pro Rodeo action AND your money goes right back into the town. WHO GETS THE PROCEEDS THE RODEO GENERATES? All proceeds are distributed to five local civic organizations: Hamel Lions, Hamel Volunteer Fire Department, Heinzen-Ditter VFW Post, John Pohlker American Legion Post and the Lord of Life Military Family Support Ministry. Since the 1st Annual Hamel Rodeo back in 1981, over $2.5 million has been distributed in cash to these organizations for them to use as they see fit in community service. Along with the direct benefit to these organizations, we dedicate funds to improving the grounds for a memorable fan experience and a safe environment for our animal athletes. WHAT’S IT COST TO PUT ON THE HAMEL RODEO? This year it will cost over $350,000 to produce the rodeo. We make it a priority to utilize local businesses and sponsors for as many of our needs as possible. The Hamel Rodeo is the largest in the state of Minnesota on the basis of both total added money and total payoff. This year, the contestants will take home over $125,000 to show for their efforts. The winner of the Bull Ridin’ Bonanza can make as much as $6,500 for 8 seconds of work. Below you can see how we compare to other local rodeos.

WHY DO WE PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO THE RODEO? Our mission is to raise funds for these civic groups and spotlight our community by providing good, clean, family entertainment year after year. Fun Fact: The rodeo is what put Hamel on the map! WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS? In the world of professional rodeo, we are deeply committed to the proper care and treatment of our animals. The PRCA began establishing rules back in 1947 to ensure livestock receives the care in which they deserve. True cowboys and cowgirls understand just how precious these animal athletes are. The livestock you see at rodeos are just as naturally competitive as our contestants. They love what they do and have more downtime grazing in pastures than performing. When animals are handled properly and given good care they actually lead a life more pleasant than most animals used for other purposes. Take a look at the large pasture on the NE corner of the rodeo grounds where the livestock roam freely prior to and immediately after each performance. No barbed wire fences, full tanks of fresh water, and ample feed. Our committee demands that rodeo judges strictly enforce the many rules prohibiting mistreatment of livestock by anyone. Any violations at rodeos result in immediate disqualification from competition and heavy fines from the PRCA. This is very seldom necessary as cowboys and cowgirls respect rodeo animals and treat them accordingly.

Until the turn of the century, early rodeos were informal events – exhibition matches of skill, with nothing but pride and perhaps a few dollars at stake. But as audiences grew, promoters began to organize annual contests in specific locations as well as traveling Western shows. Rodeo organizations remained fragmented until the late 1920s, when the Rodeo Association of America, comprised of rodeo committees and promoters from across the U.S., named its first champions. The first true national cowboys’ organization emerged in 1936, when a group of cowboys and cowgirls left a performance at Madison Square Garden and boycotted the promoter’s next rodeo, in Boston Garden. They forced one of the biggest rodeo producers of the times, Col. W.T. Johnson, to listen to their demands for better prize money and judges who understood rodeo. Johnson gave in and the Cowboys’ Turtle Association was born – a name they picked because they had been slow to act, but had finally stuck their necks out for their cause. In 1945, the Turtles became the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA), which in 1975 evolved into the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The PRCA has experienced tremendous growth in terms of membership, national exposure, media coverage and sanctioned rodeos. Today, the PRCA boasts nearly 7,000 members (4,692 of whom are currently contestants) and sanctions more than 700 rodeos a year. The PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., which includes the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, opened in 1979. Fans keep up to date with their favorite athletes by subscribing to the PRCA’s ProRodeo Sports News magazine, watching livestreamed PRCA events, logging on to www.ProRodeo.com and following the PRCA’s social media platforms.
