CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY On the Topic of Motherhood with Joanna and Bernice The Happy Tooth

Toward the end of last year, our scheduling coordinator, Joanna, and one of our dental hygienists, Bernice, both welcomed new babies into the world. It was a very exciting time for them, and for our office, as we made sure they were able to take the time off they needed to recover and bond with their new babies. Joanna and Bernice have both been back at the office for some time now. To celebrate Mother’s Day, I wanted to give them the opportunity to talk a bit about their children and share some stories of motherhood. Leah and Luca

Being a new mom is a beautiful phase in my life that I never saw myself going through. Mila is my first child. For years, I always said I didn’t want kids and I didn’t even want to get married. Then I met my husband, and all of that changed. Now I have Mila, and I can’t believe she’s mine. It has been a roller coaster of an experience since Mila was born. She was a premie, born at 32 weeks. It was a very scary moment, and I was really worried about her for a little bit. But I knew she was in good hands. Since then, she’s been perfectly healthy. She already sleeps through the night, and she’s the happiest, smiliest, laughing baby I’ve ever met. When I think about how this little person wants me when she’s sad or needs to cuddle, my heart explodes with love. I thank God every morning that He gave me the opportunity to be Mila’s mom. I am truly blessed.

Last November, I gave birth to my second child, Luca. My oldest, my daughter Leah, is already 3 years old. I’ve loved being a mom to Leah, though, to be honest, when I was pregnant with Luca, I was a little scared. I was excited for my little boy to come along, but I worried I wouldn’t have enough time for both of my children or that Leah would feel resentful about the new baby. But as soon as he was born, everything went away. Leah loves her baby brother so much. She wants to carry him around all the time, and I have to keep an eye on her so she doesn’t grab him on her own! I can tell she’s going to be a good sister. Like with everything else when it comes to parenting, figuring it all out is a process. Having two kids is a whole new challenge, but when they’re both here, and I can see how much they love each other, it all feels right.

-Bernice

I am so proud to work with two such amazing women and mothers. These women are key personnel on our team, and I’m happy to see them thriving in this phase of their lives. I’m also excited about our new associate, Dr. Zhang, who is pregnant and due this August.

To Joanna, Bernice, Dr. Zhang, and all the wonderful moms out there, I wish you a very happy Mother’s Day!

Welcoming Mila

-Joanna

Want a tan? Go sunless!

Though popular, that “sun-kissed” look is actually a sign of skin damage caused by harmful UV rays. If your summer look just isn’t complete without a tan, consider using a sunless tanning product. The Mayo Clinic states, “Topical sunless tanning products are generally considered safe alternatives to sunbathing, as long as they’re used as directed.” So read the directions and enjoy a great summer tan while keeping your skin safe. Take cool showers . Hot showers are relaxing, but they also dry out your skin, especially in the heat of summer. Do your skin a favor and turn down the temperature. As a bonus, taking a cool shower after sweating can reduce acne breakouts. Stay hydrated. Hydrated skin is happy skin, so keep a water bottle handy. Start by swapping a sugary beverage at mealtime with a glass of water instead. Another healthy way to get extra water is by snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables. Certain summer fruits, like melons, have high water content and are full of vitamins your body craves.

Soak Up the Sun Without Damaging Your Skin

Summer is a wonderful time of year for your health. The warm weather encourages outdoor activities, and the vitamin D produced by sunlight can boost your mood. Unfortunately, sunshine can also do a number on your skin. Here are a few tips to protect your skin while having fun in the sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen! People of all complexions should wear sunscreen every day. Even if you aren’t at the beach, harsh sunlight can still damage your skin when you’re walking around or driving your car. Dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen with SPF 30 first thing in the morning and reapplying periodically through the day.

There’s a lot to love about the summertime. With these tips, your skin can love it too.

Pro Tip: Don’t put the sunscreen away when it gets cold. The sun is still harmful in the winter months.

WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT WHITE TEETH?

3 Secret Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Better Mood

Our teeth look smooth, but they are actually porous. These pores absorb anything with color, like coffee or wine, and are the reason your teeth go from bright white to a dingy, stained yellow over time. Whitening your teeth removes stains from inside these pores, brightening your smile and improving your life in ways you may not expect. A person’s smile is one of the first things people notice when you meet someone. If you’re uncomfortable with your stained, yellowing teeth, odds are you press your lips together when your smile or cover your mouth when you laugh. This comes off as secretive and untrustworthy, and it can push people away. Plus, who doesn’t want to be around someone who laughs and smiles freely? Better Relationships

to preventing serious health risks, like tooth decay or gum disease.

When we no longer feel self-conscious about our smiles, we tend to smile more. This can lead to us feeling genuinely happier. Just the act of smiling creates a chemical reaction in our brains, releasing hormones like dopamine and serotonin. These hormones are associated with happiness and reduced stress. In short, smiling creates a feedback loop of extra happiness! After going through the process of whitening your teeth, you’re probably going to want to maintain that bright smile for as long as possible. Individuals who whiten their teeth tend to be more serious about proper dental hygiene. Not only does this help keep your teeth pearly white, but regular oral care is also vital when it comes Better Oral Health
