Family Fun on Lake Sakakawea Our Annual Lakeside Get-Togethers
Since I’ve moved back to Aberdeen, summer seems more special than ever. As you all know, around here it takes a long time for the sun to start consistently showing its face, especially after the brutal winter we had. But once the constant chill lifts, the warm weather is irresistible, as it invites you to get outside, drop your line in the water, or go to the driving range. I love the whole season, but my summer appreciation reaches its peak on the Fourth when my extended family and I head to Lake Sakakawea to relax and catch up for the week. Everybody crams into my family’s old lakeside cabin, which we’ve owned for over 30 years, or next door at my aunt and uncle’s. We end up with 15 or 20 people milling around, swimming, and hanging out in the sunshine. Though I’m not sure I’d call it an annual family reunion, it’s definitely the closest thing my family has to one! Besides being a lot of fun, these get-togethers are usually the one time a year I get to see my cousins. They come from North Carolina, Dallas, and all over the country for our annual July getaway. These days, a lot of us have kids: My sister has three, and my cousins have six. It’s a powerful thing to reconvene in this special place in the midst of the lives we’ve all built for ourselves. When we’re not chatting, there’s a lot to do. Inevitably, the kids will convince someone to take them out on the boat and speed them around on a flimsy inner tube. As for ourselves, we take turns out in the setting sun, jig fishing off the boat for the abundant, delicious walleye. When we go out fishing on the lake, we’re almost guaranteed to catch dinner. My dad is an avid angler and has an uncanny knack for tracking them down.
“The sound of the water lapping against the shore, boat motors reverberating over the lightly rippled surface — these things retain their emotional power even after decades have passed.”
Every time I come back to the lake for the Fourth, I also return to my childhood. Though the area has changed a lot, with dozens of new developments moving in and the modernization of the town, the feeling it gives me is, in many ways,
the same. The sound of the water lapping against the shore, boat motors reverberating over the lightly rippled surface — these things retain their emotional power even after decades have passed. Mostly, I’m just grateful that my family and I have this time set aside every year to see each other and take stock of the good things in life. When we were little, we almost never went on big vacations — our vacation took place every summer weekend on Lake Sakakawea. Who knew that I’d be returning there every year for all this time?

PUT DOWN THE SCISSORS and Step Away From the Newspaper
You don’t get paid enough to afford all the groceries you’d like. In fact, if it wasn’t for coupons, you wouldn’t be able to get everything you need, right? Coupon clipping is a time-honored way of saving money and a source of pride amongst many of us who need those paychecks to go as far as possible. But there are two ways to look at it: as a way to put food on the table that you otherwise couldn’t afford, or as a way to trick money-conscious consumers into buying stuff they normally wouldn’t. Which takeaway describes your situation? To find out, you have to answer two questions. The first question is, “Do I need — and will I use — everything that I buy with coupons?” Here’s the thing: Coupons are designed to affect you psychologically. It turns out that the same part of your brain that governs basic instincts (like hunger and pleasure) also loves a screaming good deal. It can be hard to resist the allure, and that means you often spend money on things that you normally wouldn’t, because you have a coupon. It’s tough, but stick to the staples — like rice, beans, oats, and salt — that you’ll use eventually and that won’t go bad. Of course, if you’ve wanted something for a long time and it goes on sale, it makes sense to buy. But don’t let the coupon section dictate your desires!
The second question is, “How much is my time worth, and how much of that time do I spend hunting down the best
deals and clipping coupons?” We’re not trained to think of our time as valuable when we aren’t working, but time is the one thing you can’t get back. If you’re saving $25 a week on stuff you actually need, but it takes 4 hours a week to get that savings, you’re losing money even if you make minimum wage. That’s time you could be spending with family, picking up a half-shift at work, or finding innovative ways to make money. We won’t deny that there are great deals out there — deals that are now more available than ever thanks to apps like Groupon. But don’t mistake coupons for anything but
what they really are: businesses trying to trick your brain into buying more
stuff. Use them wisely, but don’t let them rule you.

“Very friendly people. Kept me up to date on my kid’s treatment, as well as my own! I have my teeth cleaned every three to four months, and it is always a pleasant experience, due to the expertise and care that is given to me by my dental hygienist, Kristi.” – Alexander Q.
“Very nice and very thorough. I have medical issues that make my neck and jaw hurt, and they were very sensitive to that.” – Mary Z.

The Buzz About Tooth Vibrators
accelerated tooth movement by 106 percent during the initial alignment phase, and then 38 to 50 percent later, all without adverse events. The most obvious benefit of AcceleDent is that it cuts braces-wearing time in half. For adults with braces, the decision to use AcceleDent is a no-brainer. The stigma of adult braces is still strong, and many adults would jump at the chance to reduce treatment time. Braces usually require adjustments every few months, and AcceleDent reduces the pain that can sometimes make it difficult for patients to talk and eat. Unfortunately, the amount of time you use the AcceleDent doesn’t directly correlate to how soon you get your braces off. It’s been found to be most effective with the recommended 20 minutes per day treatment, but prolonged use can actually hinder its effectiveness. As of 2015, OrthoAccel has shipped nearly 40,000 units to 2,500 practices nationwide. The device tacks on $500 to a standard braces bill, but many patients say the cost is well worth the speedy results.
Get Out of Braces Faster With AcceleDent
The OrthoAccel Technologies’ AcceleDent System, which received FDA clearance in 2011, is a hands-free, rechargeable, removable mouthpiece that patients with braces wear for 20 minutes a day to dramatically speed up tooth movement. Patients often liken the soft vibrations to a gentle massage. The technology behind AcceleDent is a concept borrowed from the orthopedic world. Instead of using plaster casts on broken or fractured bones, a vibrating cup can be used to help reduce pain and speed up healing, which in turn results in a stronger heal in the bone. In a randomized controlled clinical trial out of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, this vibration

Cat Tracks to Canada
BooBoo’s Incredible Journey
Baffled, the humane society called the contact number stored on the chip. No one answered at first. Olgah Chmelicek, BooBoo’s owner, said, “I didn’t even answer the phone the first day; it’s gotta be a wrong number. Who’s calling me from Canada?” After a few tries, the Guelph Humane Society and Olgah connected, and Olgah’s next step was clear. “We’ve got to do whatever it takes to get her.” Olgah admits BooBoo is no stranger to disappearing acts. When BooBoo was a kitten, she would find a place to curl up and sleep among the kids’ stuffed animals. Olgah says the cat would be completely invisible for hours, if not days, at a time. Olgah flew up to Buffalo, New York, to pick up BooBoo. “She was a little scared at first, but now she’s loving and loving.” The moral of this story? Here’s what Olgah has to say: “I can’t express how important it is to chip your animal. Even though it’s four years later ... miracles happen.”
If BooBoo the tabby cat could talk, oh, the stories she’d tell. In 2013, BooBoo vanished without a trace from her home in Watsonville, California, a city near Santa Cruz. In March 2017, BooBoo miraculously reappeared — in Puslinch, Ontario, Canada, a small township several miles outside of Toronto. How does a small cat travel over 2,000 miles in four years? That’s the question BooBoo’s owners have been asking since the reunion. Only BooBoo knows the answer. Shortly before BooBoo was reunited with her family, she was found wandering around the Puslinch area. The tabby had been labeled a stray and was picked up by the nearby Guelph Humane Society. Officials with the Guelph Humane Society checked to see if the cat was microchipped. Sure enough, she was.
