ADAM GILBERT, DPT, CSCS Introducing Our Newest Team Member

Strangest food you’ve ever eaten: donut bank burger at fall festival. Favorite saying/quote: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” - Steve Prefontaine. I also like one from Elf “I just like to smile, smiling’s my favorite!” - Elf Where you attended high school/grew up: Comstock Park, MI. Just north of Grand Rapids The tv program you are addicted to: The Office More about Adam: I met my wife, Traci, at the University of Evansville where I was recruited to run Cross Country. We both continued at UE for the DPT program and I worked with the cross country team as the assistant coach. I am now assistant coaching the cross country team at Jasper High School and love to work with runners through coaching and in the clinic. After graduation my wife and I were blessed with twin girls, Kinzie and Kylie and despite several medical issues they are healthy, strong and rambunctious. The girls enjoy playing with their baby dolls, watching princess movies, and walking our dog Perry (named after Perry the Platypus on the cartoon Phineas and Ferb so we could say “hey where’s Perry?”). We are expecting another baby in November! I enjoy running, traveling, and spending time with my family outside. Adam Gilbert received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from University of Evansville and began working with Advanced Rehabilitation Inc in August of 2018. Prior to joining the ARI team, he worked at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. During his undergraduate work in exercise science with minor in sports psychology, Adam competed in cross country at the DI level. He is a Certified Strength and

Conditioning Specialist and works with the Jasper High School cross country team as assistant coach. Adam utilizes manual techniques including joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, functional dry needling, and Astym. He also focuses on movement patterns and gait analysis to guidemanual techniques and exercises to optimize function and reduce risk of injury. Much of his focus is on recovery from running related injuries, and he works in the community for injury prevention for runners and athletes of all levels. He also enjoys working with a variety of neurological conditions, and orthopedic and work related injuries.

HELPING ARTHRITIS PAIN “You Deserve An Effective Treatment Plan!” When you experience an injury, dealing with the pain that comes as part of the aftermath is expected. While painful, most of the time when recovering from an injury you can find comfort in the knowledge that the pain is temporary. As your body heals, as you go through the motions of building your muscle mass back and improving flexibility with physical therapy, you know that in time you will feel like yourself again. This knowledge gives you something to work towards, and helps the pain feel more manageable—even when it is intense. Arthritis pain is different. Arthritis doesn’t develop as a result of an injury, but instead develops over time as a result of chronic use, or even as a result of genetic disposition. This can make dealing with the pain of arthritis even more difficult to cope with, that begs the question: if the pain is coming from inside the joint, is there anything I can actually do about it? Understanding Arthritis Pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic condition to affect the joints. Almost 30 million adults in the United States struggle with the condition, and while it can impact anyone of any age, it most frequently develops among those who are most prone to overuse—those who are over the age of 65. Arthritis occurs when there is a breakdown of the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones. This cartilage is what allows the joints in the elbows, ankles, knees, and hips to move with freedom. Without cartilage, the bones would rub against one another with each movement, and would cause Cyndi Fortune, PT

extreme pain. As the cartilage breaks down, so, typically, does the bone, and as the shape of the joint changes, it becomes even more difficult for it to function smoothly. Furthermore, the ligaments and tendons around the joint will often stiffen, and the muscles surrounding the joint will weaken, making it altogether more difficult and painful to move. While arthritis pain typically develops gradually, the realization of what you are dealing with can still come as a shock. In some circumstances the pain will appear more abruptly, especially when the pain develops in association with a change in weather or other environmental circumstance. “Always pleasant and professional!” “The very first time I walked into ARI, I was met by Jennifer with a welcoming smile. She was always pleasant and professional. She introduced me to Rebecca who sat down with me and evaluated my shoulder. She explained what the plan of action would be.Then I sat down with Andrea. I could tell from the beginning she wanted me to have a complete recovery with the least amount of pain and discomfort as possible. In the following weeks with her care and guidance, she accomplished just that. Before I had my shoulder surgery, I heard horror stories of people suffering from pain in rehab. All I have to say about that is they must have had the wrong therapist!” - B. Meunier Patient Success Spotlight

OVERCOMING ARTHRITIS PAIN

Turning to over the counter pain medications to cope with arthritis pain is ineffective as a long-term solution. While some of the medications may provide temporary relief, they will not help you overcome the pain for good. Physical therapy, on the other hand, can provide actual relief from arthritis by helping to rebuild strength in the joints through targeted movements and flexibility exercises. There is a lot of current research trying to understand what precisely causes arthritis to develop in some people, and not in others. Everyone uses their joints every day, and while it makes sense that so much pressure would cause pain to develop over time, it doesn’t explain why the pain develops when and where it does, and why it happens to some people and not to others. Anti-inflammation and Arthritis. One leading form of arthritis treatment is with the use of anti-inflammatory medication. Certain types of arthritis develop as a result of a build-up of inflammation in the body. Specifically, the tendonsand ligamentsbecome inflamedasa resultofan internalattack from the immune system, which is typically triggered by some combination of environmental factors. Avoiding certain foods and movements can reduce inflammation, and thereby reduce pain. PhysicalTherapy and Arthritis. Physical therapy is highly recommended for the treatment of arthritis because it can strengthen and support the joints through guided practice of movement and strength building exercises. Typically, the best activities for arthritis pain are low-impact activities. Working with a physical therapist is the best way to ensure that you are practicing the best techniques for overcoming your discomfort. There is a long list of home remedies that are said to help with arthritis pain as well, and there is some credibility to some of these concepts. For SPINACH STUFFED MUSHROOMS Healthy Recipe DIRECTIONS Wash the mushrooms and carefully remove the stems without breaking the caps. Finely chop the stems. Combine the shallots, garlic and vinegar in a small skillet or saucepan and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the chopped mushroom stems and soy sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes, until the mushrooms soften and release their juices. Add the spinach and cook, continuing to stir, until it is wilted and the liquid in the pan is absorbed. Remove from the heat and let cool for a few minutes, then stir in the yogurt. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Stuff the spinach filling into the mushroom caps. Place the mushrooms in a baking pan and bake for 20 minutes, until tender. Remove from the oven and let sit for a fewminutes for the filling to set before serving. Yields 20 mushrooms. INGREDIENTS • 20 medium mushrooms • 1/4 cup chopped shallots, scallions or onion • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce • 2 cups chopped fresh spinach • 1/2 cup Plain Greek Yogurt • Salt and pepper to taste

example, losing weight, exercising regularly, and making some dietary changes such as reducing caffeine and sugar consumption are said to help alleviate pain associated with arthritis. However, before you start making any changes to your lifestyle, it is best to consult with a physical therapist.
