HOW TO HELP WITH RESOLUTIONS On Goal-Setting and Measuring Progress
Happy New Year’s to all of my wonderful and supportive patients. You made each day in 2018 so enjoyable for my team and me, and we are thankful that you entrust us to help transform your radiant smiles! As you venture headfirst into 2019, you’ll likely find yourself making a list of objectives, more popularly known as New Year’s resolutions, to reach this year. There are many motives that cause individuals to take time to reflect on the previous year and come up with a list of goals to work toward. But to me, the most important reason is to measure progress. Whether you’re making personal evaluations at work or at home, you will notice that progress can ebb and flow. But setting realistic and achievable goals is the only way to pinpoint if growth is actually occurring over time. To help empower you with better ways to measure headway in 2019, I would like to share some advice that helped me steadily improve in 2018. “Focusing on one’s health is conducive to longevity, but the trick is to avoid fad diets or quick fixes that seem to permeate social media during the early months of the year.”
the widely popular gluten-free diets that have played a major role in the American social conscious in the last decade. Gundry doesn’t allege that people don’t have gluten allergies or intolerances; rather, he reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common and highly toxic plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the gluten-free foods most people commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. Once ingested, lectins incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions. This book opened my eyes to solutions that ended up being exactly what my body needed to be healthier and lose weight. Over this last year, I found that incorporating Gundry’s suggestions helped me reach my goal, and I was able to find a viable approach to help me maintain my health for years to come. If your resolution this year includes a greater focus on your health, I highly recommend “The Plant Paradox.” Regardless of what your goals are for 2019, know that I am rooting for you!
I often set a New Year’s resolution to be healthier. I realize that this objective isn’t necessarily original — go to the gym any time up until March, and the building will be filled to the brim with people who have the same resolution. Still, focusing on one’s health is conducive to longevity, but the trick is to avoid fad diets or quick fixes that seem to permeate social media during the early months of the year. Instead, you need to implement realistic and scientifically researched changes that will help you reach your goals.
Last year, I came across “The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in ‘Healthy’ Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain.” Penned by cardiologist Steven R. Gundry, this book contains information that refutes

Meet Alejandra, Our Amazing Dental Assistant EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT!
Smiles. For approximately two months, she came in, learned from Dr. Alborzi, and helped patients on their journey to transform their smiles. Once she graduated from school, the team called her to fill the dental assistant position, a role she thoroughly enjoys. Alejandra’s interest in dentistry and orthodontics started long before her internship. In fact, Alejandra claims that, even as a child, she loved going to see the dentist. She explains, “When I was a little girl, I would beg my mom to take me to the dentist. I would stand by the door and yell, ‘Let’s go! Let’s go!’” Alejandra’s love for dentistry grew right along with her, but her choice to join the orthodontics field later on stemmed from her experiences. While many kids and teens hate the idea of metal braces, Alejandra looked forward to visits with her
orthodontist. “I didn’t break a single bracket the entire time I had braces, and I attribute that to the clear and specific instructions my orthodontist gave me during our visits. The whole team walked me through the process and was always willing to answer any questions I had.” Alejandra tries to implement those same informative and helpful strategies with her own patients now that she is on the other side of the conversation. In fact, her favorite aspect of the job is sitting down with patients and educating them on the process. She says, “I love getting to see the improvement every time a patient comes by. I think I get more excited than they do when they get their braces off!” When Alejandra isn’t at the office helping patients with their personalized orthodontics, she likes to spend her days hiking and walking her dogs, Roscoe and Daisy, along the beaches in Half Moon Bay. Alejandra is a hard worker and a great addition to our team! If you see her around the office, be sure to say hello!
If you have visited our office in the last six months, perhaps you were able to meet Alejandra Castro, our new dental assistant. She recently took on her role here in the office, but Alejandra isn’t new to working with Dr. Alborzi. While she pursued her dental education, Alejandra did her internship here at Alborzi

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND INVISALIGN
With the popularity of Invisalign braces since the early 2000s, over 5 million people, including more than 1 million teens, have used these advanced, clear aligners to transform their smiles. Unlike the traditional metal braces of the past, Invisalign clear aligners are removable, and plenty of patients have reported that wearing them fits in seamlessly with their day-to-day lifestyles. In order to create these customized braces, orthodontists like Dr. Alborzi will take impressions of your teeth with amazing technological help from the iTero intraoral digital scanning system. How Does It Work? The iTero scanner replaces the old method of using messy and uncomfortable impression materials to capture the shape and alignment of your teeth. With the traditional molds, there was always the possibility of error, meaning that your orthodontist would have to do multiple impressions to build your clear braces. But the iTero scanner allows Dr. Alborzi to use computer technology to create them from a digital impression. With this software, Dr. Alborzi can show you a preview of your treatment results from start to finish. This means that Dr. Alborzi can show you a 3D model of your proposed outcome before you even try on your first aligner. What Are the Benefits? iTero scanners have been used for more than 1.3 million orthodontic scans, including more than 600,000 Invisalign scans. The benefits of using the iTero
technology when building the aligners are just as plentiful as using the Invisalign itself. Both the convenience of this technology for orthodontists and the results experienced by patients are demonstrated through the sheer number of people who opt to use it. Patients have taken notice of the advanced digital imaging for much greater accuracy than impressions, easy treatment planning and a preview of their results through the 3D imaging, a lower cost than traditional impressions, and fewer and shorter appointments. With all these benefits, there really isn’t a reason not to check out this amazing technology. If you have more questions about our iTero scanner or about Invisalign braces, don’t hesitate to give our office a call.

3 OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST WINTER SPORT DESTINATIONS Who’s Ready for Some Powder?
The sound of the first carve through fresh powder is the anthem of all winter sports enthusiasts. Here are three of the world’s best places to experience that powder you’ve been craving all year.
Breckenridge, Colorado John Denver’s anthem “Rocky Mountain High” is about the freedom he felt here. Where there are great mountains, there’s even better snow. The ski resort boasts five peaks, 187 trails, 34 lifts, four terrain parks, and a renowned cross-country trail. After a day on the slopes, head into the town of Breckenridge for dining and activities that ditch the glitz and glamour of Vail or Aspen and take you straight to the heart of fun.
Whistler, British Columbia, Canada A destination that looks like a cross
St. Anton, Austria If you want a great location for next year’s Christmas card photo, there’s no better place than the Tyrolean Alps. Nestled in a valley between perfectly molded mountains, the Austrian landscape provides a beautiful backdrop for your winter excursions. The densely wooded areas and the bright reflection of the snow frame the vibrant town that’s just waiting to be explored. When you’re ready for world-class runs, hop in one of the 11 gondolas and zip down the hills that hosted the 2001 Alpine World Ski Championships.
between a Nordic paradise and Olympic- level runs, Whistler is filled with true magic, winter activities, and a town that captivates the senses. When you see the mountains of British Columbia, you’ll understand why they hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. The location’s beauty is only part of your stimulating experience, because every curve of fresh powder makes your pupils dilate. Once you’re done flying down the hill where Bode Miller took the bronze, head over to the winter wonderland of the old Olympic Village for a cozy night in a picturesque town.
