Introduction Welcome to our 2018 Amenity Grass Seed Mixtures brochure. Bartholomews is proud to be a family owned company with a heritage of over 130 years in agriculture. Our foundations are built on working tirelessly to ensure only the highest quality seeds are offered to our customers. Our amenity seed is mixed using the latest varieties offering superior genetics and quality, whilst ensuring there is a product for every scenario. Our sole aim is to achieve this through extensive research in our on-site seed laboratory and regional trials. We always aim to supply our mixtures as per the descriptions shown above. Occasionally, supplies of some varieties run out and it may be necessary to substitute the variety with one of a similar quality and growth habit. You will be advised of any substitutions via the bag label which has the constituents printed on it. We look forward to hearing from you to discuss your requirements.

Establishing Grass Seed
Sowing seed is the least expensive method of establishing an area of grass and has the added advantage of allowing the exact composition of the turf to be determined for any given situation. Correct preparation of the seed bed is very important and care taken at this stage will pay dividends. Site Preparation If the site is weed covered, clear by cultivation or by application of a total herbicide e.g. Roundup. The site should then be landscaped as required and all clods, rubble and rubbish removed. The soil should be reduced to a fine tilth (ideally no particle should be larger than a grain of wheat) and a pre- seeding fertiliser (1 nitrogen : 1 phosphate : 1 potash) at 1oz/sq. yd. (35g/m2) applied if necessary. The surface can then be firmed before sowing. Sowing Broadcast the seed as evenly as possible or drill at the rate indicated. A lower rate will result in slow establishment and a patchy sward, whilst too high
a rate increases the possibility of disease. The surface should again be rolled or firmed. It is then important to prevent drying out and bird damage if possible. Management Seedlings appear 7 - 21 days later, but do not cut until shoots are 40 - 50 mm (1.5 - 2 inches) long. At this stage it should be rolled lightly, left to recover for 1 - 3 days then cut to remove the top 10 - 20 mm (0.5 - 0.75 inches) only, with a sharp-bladed mower. Time To Sow Mid August - Mid September Ideal as competition from annual weeds and susceptibility to drought is minimised. Seedlings should emerge in 1 - 2 weeks. April - June Ground is cooler and weed contamination greater. Seedlings should emerge in 2 - 3 weeks. There is a greater risk of the soil drying out.

Wild Flowers
With the rapid increase in environmental awareness and conservation, wild flower / grass mixtures are proving very popular. These mixtures give optimum conditions for establishment, with the rapidly germinating grass cultivars acting as a nurse crop for the more slowly establishing flower seed. It is important that the correct mixture is selected to coincide with the soil type and drainage characteristics of each site. We have a very comprehensive range of mixtures available for all soil types and situations from simple meadow mixtures, to very specialised mixtures for unusual habitats. The grass and flower seeds are mostly British-grown native wild flower species and are laboratory tested for purity and germination. The proportion of flower to grass seed is usually 20% flowers / 80% grass. An informative leaflet detailing the mixtures is available upon request.

Amenity Fertilisers We offer a range of amenity and fine turf fertilisers. These differ from the normal agricultural blends by having much finer granules, ensuring a more even spread onto grass. Their slow release action ensures a constant feed of nutrient into the soil providing steady, healthy growth rather than a quick flush. Crop Protection We also offer a wide and comprehensive range of chemicals approved for amenity and forestry use; these include herbicides, insecticides and moss killers.
