April 10 is National Siblings Day! It was important to my wife and me that our kids had siblings. Having siblings is like always having a friend — they are there for you no matter what. I understand that some people may not have a close relationship with their siblings, but my wife and I are fortunate to have a tight bond with our brothers and sisters, even to this day. I am the youngest of four siblings. I have two older brothers and one older sister. You could say I was like the stereotypical youngest child. I always looked up to my older siblings, and I wanted to be just like them. But I also liked to push their buttons and annoy them — my wife says I’m still like that today. When I would break the rules, I would get them in trouble and then act innocent. Today, we all stay in contact and text each other often. I’m happy that we can laugh together about the memories we created and are still as close as when we were kids. My wife, on the other hand, was the oldest of six. Jessica was the stereotypical oldest child. She was a complete rule follower, tried to be the best at everything, and led by example. She would take everyone else’s problems on and was a second mom to her siblings growing up — I don’t think this has changed at all, either! Although all of her siblings live in different parts of the U.S., they have a family group chat and try to get together once a year. They moved a lot when they were little, and she is grateful that she always had her siblings by her side. She always had a friend no matter where they moved. “My wife and I are so thankful for our siblings, and we hope that our children will feel the same about theirs.” The Greatest Gift in This World ... Is Having Siblings

R

We have five children who range in age from 9 years to 1 year old. Even though there is a wide age span, they’re all best friends. Of course, like usual siblings, they have their regular quarrels, like fighting over toys or what movie to watch. But it’s so fun to watch them grow and how they encourage one another. Our kids also celebrate their differences, and any chance they get to tell others about their sibling’s gifts, they will. Watching our children come together as a team is inspiring. For example, they’ve been wanting a family pet. We have offered a goldfish, but they don’t see it as a pet because you can’t play with it. My wife and I don’t want a pet right now because we are not at the stage in life to take care of another living being. But they were so determined to have a pet that they created a spreadsheet with different pets they would like. Then, they voted on the pet they would want, and the top contenders were a puppy or a hamster. They also wrote down how they would pitch in money to take care of expenses and how they would divide up the chores. One of our children even drew posters of the animals and placed them all over our house so we could see them. One of our daughters realized that we weren’t budging on the pet idea and told her other sister that she was giving up. Our youngest daughter wrote her a note, telling her never to give up. It’s so inspiring to see the connections that my children are making. It shows that having siblings is the greatest gift you can have. My wife and I are so thankful for our siblings, and we hope that our children will feel the same about theirs. We love watching our children grow and develop strong bonds with one another. We can’t wait to see what their relationships will look like as they get older.

HAS SPRING BROUGHT BUGS INTO YOUR HOME?

Get Rid of Them With These Hacks

When the weather warms up, bugs infiltrate homes across the country. Once it happens, you’re often left scrambling to your local hardware store to get the necessary pesticide or bug deterrent. Unfortunately, many pesticides and traps postpone the problem rather than solve it entirely. The good news is that you can fix many insect problems without having to test random products you find at the store. Certain household items do a magnificent job at preventing, deterring, and sometimes even killing bugs. If you’re worried about bugs infesting your home this spring, give these methods a try. LEMON OIL The last thing we want to see in our homes is a cockroach. A popular urban legend says that cockroaches can survive a nuclear explosion, so you probably can’t keep them out of your home. Plus, many of the products you can buy to kill or deter cockroaches are extremely toxic, so setting them out is dangerous if you have pets. Instead, put a few drops of lemon oil into the water you use to mop the floor. Cockroaches hate the smell. People won’t notice the scent, and you’ll be cockroach-free before you know it. PEPPERMINT OIL Spiders are one of the more common pests we see in our homes. Even though the majority of these spiders are not harmful (and actually eat other insects), most people still do not want them in their houses. Peppermint oil is a natural repellent. It doesn’t kill spiders, but it keeps them away. Add 5–10 drops of peppermint oil into 3/4 cup water mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of liquid detergent to create a harmless mixture that will keep spiders at bay. CINNAMON Another common pest that can be a nightmare to get rid of is ants. Once you notice ants getting into your home, they appear to be endless and can be found in just about every corner of the house. Ants hate the smell of cinnamon and will avoid areas with the scent. Sprinkle some cinnamon near the areas where they are entering your house and watch them disappear.

• Smoke or chew tobacco • Regularly consume excessive amounts of alcohol • Have a history of head or neck cancer

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? Although doctors are unsure why these changes in your cells occur, possible symptoms can include: • Leukoplakia: These are white patches on your tongue that do not disappear after brushing. • Oral lichen planus: This is when the white patches on your tongue develop a reddish border around it.

If oral cancer does begin to develop, you may notice:

• Pain, bleeding, or numbness around your mouth • Loose teeth or swelling of the jaw • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw

ARE THERE ANY TREATMENTS? You can try four types of treatment if you have oral cancer.

• Surgery: A doctor can recommend this to remove a tumor. Surgery can involve removing parts of your tongue, jawbone, and lymph nodes. • Radiation therapy: Oral cancers are sensitive to high-energy X-rays, which can prevent the tumor cells from reproducing. • Chemotherapy: If cancer spreads to areas other than your mouth, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy along with radiation therapy. • Hyperthermia therapy: This uses heat to damage and kill cancer cells. This will also make cancer more sensitive to radiation therapy. At Anderson Dental, we care about you and your health. Therefore, we include screenings during your annual examination. If you or a loved one has symptoms or has been diagnosed with oral cancer, allow us to help you. We can look at your symptoms and suggest the proper treatment moving forward.

GET SPRUNG 4 Ways to Harvest

Positive Vibes in Spring

Have you ever noticed that springtime just feels lighter and brighter? That’s because, believe it or not, the seasons affect us. When spring rolls around, the energy shifts, and it’s up to us to maximize those positive vibes. Let’s examine how we can make the most of spring and inject some color and vibrancy into our lives again after a long winter. RELY ON COLOR. Colors have the ability to elicit certain emotions and feelings. Tropical tones and pastels are everywhere in spring — the clear sky, grass, and flowers — so allow them to fill your space and take them with you as constant reminders to smile. If you’re up for it, wear some new colors to brighten up your wardrobe, and don’t forget to take in a sunset when you’re able! ENJOY MORE HOURS OF DAYLIGHT. Spring brings more hours of sunlight and warming temperatures that can give you more time to enjoy your morning cup of coffee outside. You can take an early stroll around the

block, get in a workout outdoors, or just enjoy the fresh air. Also, many areas observe daylight saving time, which extends sunlight into the evening, so no matter how you choose to spend your extra daylight, make it an adventure.

WELCOME SPRING-CLEANING. It isn’t called spring-cleaning for nothing!

Decluttering, dusting, reorganizing, and tidying up feels great! It’s empowering and refreshing. There is something special about creating more space in your living space that gets the positivity flowing. EAT FRESH, COLORFUL FOODS. During spring, many delicious fruits and vegetables come into season. Berries, oranges, apples, carrots, avocados, cherries, spinach, and kale are all at their peak. Your local farmers market is a great place to get the freshest produce to fuel your body! Spring is a time for new beginnings and positivity. Make the most of this spring season by welcoming a fresh abundance of love and life.

IS THE SUN A YELLOW DWARF STAR? Yes, it is! The sun is categorized as a G-type main-sequence star. But the sun isn’t actually yellow. Instead, the Earth’s atmosphere makes it appear yellow when we see it. The sun is also quite large because stars usually get bigger as they grow older. WHERE IS THE WORLD’S OLDEST AMUSEMENT PARK? The oldest amusement park in the world is in Klampenborg, Denmark. The Bakken opened in 1583 and has over 150 attractions. DO YELLOW JACKETS DIE AFTER THEY STING YOU? No, yellow jackets can sting and bite you numerous times and then fly away. Honeybees are the ones that die after they sting you. This is because they can’t pull out their stinger from your skin without stabbing themselves. WHY ARE THEY CALLED GRANNY SMITH APPLES? Maria Ann (Granny) Smith found a seed growing with her French crab apples in her creek. She was the first person to create a light- colored green apple.
