Remembering the Importance of the Holiday WHAT I STRIVE TO TEACH MY KIDS

My family and I really get into the Fourth of July — parades, fireworks, and patriotic outfits are all in the mix. While there are some fireworks shows around Cincinnati, several years ago we were determined to find a really awesome place to get the full Independence Day experience. After doing some research, we found South Haven, Michigan. It’s small-town America with big patriotic flare. They have a great parade and then wonderful fireworks over Lake Michigan. Our family enjoyed South Haven so much that we’ve been going back for the Fourth of July almost every year since then. We weren’t able to go to South Haven for the past two years due to the pandemic, but we are hoping to return for the celebration this year. Even when we weren’t able to travel, we found ways to celebrate the holiday at home. We decorated our house with banners, American flags, played with sparklers, and had our own barbecue. Even with a different tradition for a few years, one thing stayed the same — teaching my children about the history of Independence Day. Jessica and I try to ensure that our children understand the importance of the holiday by learning the history of why we celebrate it each year. We do this because it can be easy to look at a holiday and view it as just another day off work or a long weekend. Having the tradition of going out of town and learning more about our country’s founding helps us maintain the integrity of the holiday. It also gives us the opportunity to address the hopes and dreams of those who fought for freedom, and how we can continue to work toward their vision for our country today.

One of our favorite ways to teach our kids about Independence Day is watching the American Hero Classics. First, we will show them episodes about the Founding Fathers, George Washington, and other individuals who played a key role when fighting for our independence. Then, we talk to them about the Declaration of Independence and read out some of the lines within the document. These activities help our children understand why this point in history is so important and why it continues to play an important role in our lives today. Some of the history of our country hit home for my family because our ancestors came to the New World from their native country to escape religious conflict and hardships. They came here for religious liberty, which was something our Founding Fathers fought for. This freedom

is really important to my family — to worship the way we want. Educating our kids about the events during our fight for liberty reminds us it’s not simply an ordinary day. Because, at the end of the day, none of us would be here or celebrating the way we want if it weren’t for the bravery of those who fought for our freedom. The overarching theme for us when it comes to honoring Independence Day is to celebrate for the right reasons — remembering the freedoms we love, in the land that we love, with those we love. And all in gratitude to those who’ve made it possible.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! I wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday.

Yes, Oral pH Matters

“Do you floss your teeth?” This is a question you may hear during your visits to the dentist. Our team asks this question because we know how essential flossing is for oral health. Of course, brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but flossing your teeth is equally important. Flossing helps avoid bad breath, prevents tooth decay, brightens your teeth, and so much more. But there is a proper way you need to floss to get the best results. HOW DO YOU PROPERLY FLOSS? Knowing and understanding the importance of flossing will keep you motivated to continue or start flossing on a daily basis. But there is a certain way to use the item for the best results. You don’t want to simply put floss between your teeth and pull it out. Don’t get discouraged! We are here to help you with this process. DO YOU FLOSS YOUR TEETH? 4 STEPS TO PROPERLY USE DENTAL FLOSS

America on the Silver Screen 5 PATRIOTIC MOVIES THE FAMILY WILL LOVE “You’re killin’ me, Smalls!” is probably what you will say to your kiddo when they say they haven’t watched “The Sandlot.” You may even discover they haven’t seen many America-themed classics! So, we have just the lineup for your next family movie night. In the spirit of Independence Day, check out these family-friendly American movie favorites. ‘THE SANDLOT’ An obvious choice but a good one, “The Sandlot” follows a group of neighborhood kids in the 1960s who gather at the local baseball diamond to play ball. It chronicles the feeling of summertime freedom, the gut-wrenching fear of local legends, the awkwardness of first crushes, and the true meaning of friendship. Plus, that Fourth of July scene will have the family in stitches! ‘NATIONAL TREASURE’ You may be surprised to learn that “National Treasure” is an action- packed movie with a PG rating! Loaded with history, the movie follows a passionate historian and a team of unlikely heroes as they search for a hidden treasure, and the location has been written on the back of the Declaration of Independence. (Be sure to check out the sequel, too, and the third movie, which is slated for a 2022 release.) ‘AN AMERICAN TAIL’ Follow Fievel the Russian mouse as he immigrates to America with his family in 1885. With action and anxiety-inducing antics, “An American Tail” provides younger children with history and a glimpse at the beauty of the American Dream. Plus, it’s nostalgia fodder for their parents, who likely grew up with Fievel and his family! ‘A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN’ Packed with Hollywood stars, “A League of Their Own” is inspired by the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Created in the depths of World War II, the league ran for 12 seasons. In the movie, two sisters must find a way to overcome their personal differences to make their baseball league a standout sport. ‘MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON’ This is one black-and-white film your politically active teens may enjoy. When Jefferson Smith becomes a U.S. senator, he’s taken under the wing of Senator John Paine, but Smith soon learns Paine has more nefarious ambitions. In the film, your family will see Congress in action — and a little ribbing, too!

Step 1: If you’re using floss that isn’t a pick, get about 18 inches of floss. Next, you want to wind about 3–4 inches around your middle fingers. This will allow you to use your thumbs and index fingers

to position the floss between your teeth.

Step 2: Whether you’re using regular dental floss or a pick, you want to place the floss into the space between your teeth gently. Do not snap the floss between your teeth, even if the gap is tight. A simple side-to-side sawing motion will do the trick, but

only when slipping the floss

between your teeth.

Step 3: Curve the floss into a c-shape around the side of each tooth, moving the floss from the gumline up to the highest contact point between the teeth. Repeat on every tooth to clean the inner sides of each tooth. Be sure to go all the way down to the gumline where plaque likes to accumulate. Floss once a day, preferably at night, to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria between the teeth that have built up throughout the day. Follow flossing with a mouth rinse and a thorough 2-minute brushing, and you'll be set! If you have any questions about different kinds of floss, flossing techniques or any other concerns, we're here to help you! We care about you and your oral health. We will be happy to help you in any way we can.

Protect Your Garden From Heat

WITH HELP FROM YOUR KIDS

Not all gardening tasks are suitable for the entire family. Fertilizers can be dangerous, and you definitely don’t want a young child wielding sharp tools. But there’s one gardening project you and the kids can tackle together: protecting your plants from the heat. Last June, heat waves scorched the country, sending temperatures in Portland, Oregon, of all places to 110 degrees F. This is uncomfortable at best, and at worst, a massive heat wave can ruin an entire spring’s worth of effort in the garden. To avoid that, rope your kids into helping you with easy heat solutions like these: 1. BUILD SHADE COVERS — Shade helps people survive the heat, and it’s great for plants too! You can overlay greenery with umbrellas, canopies, “garden fabric,” or even bed sheets draped over your plants. If you have spare lumber or PVC pipe, build a trellis to hold up your shade cover. YouTube has plenty of tutorials for this — just search “Garden Shade DIY.” 2. SPREAD ORGANIC MULCH — Adding 2–4 inches of light-colored mulch around your trees, shrubs, and other plants will protect the soil from the sun and keep it damp and cool.

be long before that water evaporates. To avoid this, enlist the kids to repot your plants in oversized, light-

colored plastic nursery pots. (Some nurseries give these away for free!)

4. WATER, WATER, WATER — Your garden will dry out twice as fast during extreme heat, so take shifts as a family checking the soil and watering when needed. Don’t rely on your sprinkler system or usual watering schedule. These tips should help protect your delicate fruit and vegetable plants. Next year, get a head start by asking your local nursery to help you choose drought and heat-tolerant species for your region and beefing up your soil with organic matter. According to Farmers’ Almanac, soil rich with 5%–9% organic matter (think compost, manure, and decomposing leaves) retains more water, saving you trips with the hose.

3. SWAP OUT TERRA COTTA POTS — Unsealed terra cotta pots are terrible at retaining moisture. If you water a plant in terra cotta, it won’t

We are excited to announce that our highly anticipated office remodel is scheduled to begin this month! Many of you know that this has been a couple of years in the making, and we can't wait for you to see what’s in store. Our office will remain open during the first phase of construction (approximately four weeks), but in order to complete the second major phase as quickly and efficiently as possible, our office will be closed for about four weeks. While we have tentative dates, there are many variables that affect the timing of this, so please keep an eye on your email — we'll remain in close contact throughout the renovations so you'll know where we're at with construction and how it's affecting office hours and protocols at any given time. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We're excited for these changes that will allow us to provide an even better Anderson Dental Care experience! The Simple Tooth

occurred in late July when the mythological god, Sirius, appears beside the sun in the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient civilizations believed that the heat from two stars, the sun and Sirius, created the year's hottest days. They also thought this period could bring high fevers and even catastrophe. JULY WAS NAMED AFTER A ROMAN DICTATOR. In 44 B.C. Julius Caesar named himself dictator for life over the Roman Empire. Caesar was born in Quintilis , which is Latin for the fifth month of the year. Now, this may be confusing to us because our fifth month of the year is May. But in the Roman calendar, July or Quintilis was their fifth month. Speaking of calendars, Caesar helped create the Julian calendar, which was popular and mainly used before the Gregorian calendar — the one we use today. THAT’S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND. On July 20, 1969, America became the first country to land someone on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon. As Armstrong took his first step, he famously said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This event occurred during the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Some have argued that the space race was over with the U.S. landing the first man on the moon. But others argued that the race continued. The debate is ongoing to this day.
