REMEMBERING OUR FAMILY HISTORIES LESSONS TO LEARN, STORIES TO SHARE
I enjoy doing genealogy work, and with Sept. 25 being Heritage Day, I thought I’d share a little story that I found — there’s even a movie about it! But I’ll tell you the story before I tell you the movie name … When my great-great-great-grandparents came to America from England, they moved to the western frontier, then to northern Mexico to settle in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. They worked to build thriving communities with beautiful homes, farms, orchards, and extensive trade. It seemed they had everything, and the Mexican president was grateful for their efforts to build the area they lived in and the business they brought to the state. After they’d lived there for 20 years, everything started to change. Pancho Villa, a Mexican revolutionary and military-landowner of Chihuahua, began pressuring the non-natives out of Mexico. Any person he considered a foreigner faced the threat of revolutionary armies. As the violence broke out, these families were faced with difficult urgent decisions to make. As the violence broke out, women in my family were put on trains with their children (one grandmother had nine kids, one had five) — along with thousands of other women and children — to get away from their homes, which were quickly becoming a war zone. The initial train rides were completely full, almost shoulder to shoulder, with no food and no water. They were taken across the border into El Paso, Texas. Meanwhile, the husbands and men stayed behind to defend their property and fight the revolution. The women and children lived in El Paso for several days as they waited for their husbands to join them. Most of them didn’t know anyone in El Paso, and they had nowhere to live, no jobs, no way to provide for their families. The people of El Paso welcomed these refugees. They provided tents, blankets, clothing, and food. A tent neighborhood was setup in El Paso for these women and children to stay indefinitely. My great-great- great-grandmother wrote about the generosity of the people of El Paso and her gratitude toward them.
men carried a white flag, but the military couldn’t see it because of all the dust. Thankfully, they allowed the men to approach, and the military realized they were the men of the refugee families.
With the families reunited, it was time to determine their next moves. The U.S. government paid for the refugees to board trains for free. They could travel anywhere in the country without having to pay for a ticket. Some families settled in El Paso for good, but many others dispersed throughout the U.S. As the stories of these refugee families began to spread, many more people were sympathetic to their experiences and offered to help them wherever they went. My great-great-great- grandparents ended up moving to Utah, where they had some relatives, and they stayed there for over five generations, becoming a family of school teachers and running an entire school district. The people of El Paso and these fleeing families, to me, exemplified the true American spirit of generosity, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. I’m inspired by the way they endured trials and setbacks, and I’m grateful for their examples to me. I think strength to overcome change and hardship is a history worth celebrating this Heritage Day. If you’re ever interested in learning more about your own family history, let me know! I’m happy to share resources and tools to help anyone discover their own family stores to learn from and share with other family members. “Pancho Villa, a Mexican revolutionary and military-landowner of Chihuahua, began pressuring the non-natives out of Mexico. After one week, a group of men approached the El Paso border. The U.S. military was at the border with weapons ready to fire. The approaching

3 Things to Do Before Your Graduate Leaves Prepping for an Empty Nest?
You probably know that oral bacteria feast on sugar, which is why every dentist you’ve ever had (and possibly your mother) has told you about the dangers of eating candy. We can’t sugarcoat it either — sugar is bad for your teeth no matter what form it comes in. However, a few sugary foods have the worst reputations of the bunch, and it’s important to know what they are and why they have earned their status. WHY DO CHEWY, STICKY FOODS CAUSE CAVITIES? The chemistry involved in making food being chewy and sticky almost guarantees it’s packed with sugar, so we are off to a rough start. But the real problem is that sticky and chewy foods stick to your teeth, and even worse, they stick between your teeth. This means that even if you are a good brusher, but you don’t floss, you could end up a sticky creek with no paddle. A large percentage of the bacteria living in your mouth live between your teeth, and sticky foods are just the fuel they need to start making cavities. CAN STICKY FOODS PULL OUT FILLINGS AND CROWNS? Yes! We can assure you Dr. Brooks uses very strong adhesive for fillings and crowns. The glue is no Elmer’s paste! But the sticky properties of sugar are so strong that, over time, they can start to break down the effectiveness of the oral adhesive. We see many patients in our office who have come because a filling came out or a crown came off. One caramel or toffee may not cause a filling to fall out, but continually eating sticky foods will. It’s an ongoing battle between the adhesive and how often sticky foods tug on it. At some point, it gives out! WHICH COMMON STICKY FOODS SHOULD YOU AVOID? Anything that starts with a “gummy” (bears, worms, rings, etc.), Starburst, Skittles, taffy, caramels, and Swedish Fish are bad for your teeth. To make those foods even more corrosive, many of them have sour versions, like sour Skittles and Sour Patch Kids. A sticky, sugary candy that contains acid to form a sour flavor is almost the worst thing you could eat. Remember: Combining sugar and acid and wedging it between your teeth is the quickest way to get cavities. Realistically, you can’t avoid all sticky, chewy foods — but you can be careful and brush and floss 30 minutes afterward to take care of any teeth-eating sugar residue! YES, AND HERE’S WHY Is Sticky Candy Actually Bad for You?
Congratulations to parents sending their children off to college or “the real world” this year! Parenthood is not for the faint of heart — from toddler meltdowns to angsty teenage years, you might be counting down the days to an empty nest.
Yet, that doesn’t make your child moving off to college any easier.
Fear not, for you can help your child live more independently at college in many ways and give yourself peace of mind knowing that your baby is going to be fine. PREPARE LEGAL DOCUMENTS Once they turn 18, your child is no longer under your care — legally speaking. You can no longer make decisions for them, including medical decisions, should they become incapacitated and unable to make their own decisions. Connect with a trusted attorney to create medical and financial powers of attorney that give you these rights. (Just consult with your child first befoare doing so!) COVER THE HOUSEHOLD BASICS If there’s one thing to look forward to, it’s all the laundry you won’t have to do anymore. And the fridge will be fully stocked without ravenous teens emptying it regularly! But before you drop your child off at college or their new home, make sure they can manage laundry, cook basic meals, and keep a tidy space. Some basics to cover include the difference between hot and cold wash and how to make scrambled eggs. MAKE A BUDGET Living as a broke young adult is almost like a rite of passage to “real” adulthood, but you can make this experience easier just by opening that often taboo door and talking about money. Explain
the processes or budgeting systems that work for your family and guide your child through their potential living expenses. Try test runs so they understand how much they will have to spend on necessities, like groceries, hygiene items, and gas.
Pro Tip: Before your children take off, don’t forget to schedule one more dental appointment! We can set up recurring appointments during breaks to ensure their oral health is never compromised.

REMEMBERING THE HEROES AMID THE TRAGEDY The Everyday People Who Saved Countless Lives on 9/11
PASSENGERS OF FLIGHT 93 While two planes hit the World Trade Center towers and one plane hit the Pentagon, another plane that headed for the White House never reached its destination. That’s because passengers aboard this flight, upon learning their plane had been hijacked, decided to rush the cockpit and overtake the terrorists. They caused the plane to crash in an empty field in Pennsylvania, saving the White House but killing everyone on board. Sad though their deaths may be, these heroic men and women continue to inspire people even 20 years later. We should never forget the tragedy of 9/11, but we should also remember these regular people who decided to take extraordinary lengths to save others.
As we approach its 20th anniversary, Sept. 11, 2001, remains one of the darkest days in American history. Almost 3,000 people lost their lives when terrorists flew passenger airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The infrastructural damage was severe, but the damage done to thousands of families across the country was even worse. While 9/11 remains a day of remembrance of these tragic events, it should also be a day to remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to save others. These are just a few of their stories. BETTY ONG AND AMY SWEENEY After five al-Qaida terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, Ong and Sweeney, two flight
attendants, used the crew phone to call their colleagues and give them information about their attackers, including what they looked like and what seats they had been sitting in. Both attendants perished, but the information they shared helped the FBI jump-start their investigation. RICK RESCORLA A Vietnam veteran who had earned a silver star for his service, Rescorla was no stranger to stressful life and death situations. As the head of corporate security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower, he defied orders from Port Authority to stay put and instead escorted 2,700 people out of the building before it collapsed. After that, he headed back in to look for stragglers. That was the last time anyone saw him.

WHEN DOES THE BRAIN STOP GROWING? Doctors used to think that the brain was fully developed by very early teenagerhood. However, the brain actually doesn’t stop developing until mid-20s or even early 30s. There’s a lot more information and evidence to suggest that brain development in various forms goes on throughout the life span. HOW HEAVY IS A SPACE SHUTTLE? The Space Shuttle (built in 1981) weighed 165,000 pounds empty. Its external tank weighed 78,100 pounds empty and its two solid rocket boosters each weighed 185,000 pounds empty. Each solid rocket booster held 1.1 million pounds of fuel. WHAT DO WATER TOWERS DO? Water towers are able to supply water even during power outages because they rely on hydrostatic pressure produced by elevation of water to push the water into domestic and industrial water distribution systems. They cannot supply water long-term without power, however.
