WHAT RIGHTS DO APPRENTICES HAVE? Apprentices used to have more rights than employees but, until recently, these have been brought in line with those of regular employees.
DO APPRENTICES NEED A CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT? Only those participating in an approved apprenticeship can hold themselves out as doing an apprenticeship. An apprentice must be given an apprenticeship agreement , which will usually be a contract of employment with some additional apprenticeships specific requirements.
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM WAGE FOR AN APPRENTICE? The minimumwage for an apprentice is £3.50 per hour for those under 19 and those who are over 19 but are in the first year of their apprenticeship. If the apprentice is over the age of 19 and not in the first year of the apprenticeship then they must receive at least the appropriate national minimum wage for their age band or the national living wage if over the age of 25.

WILL AN APPRENTICE SPEND ALL THEIR TIMEWORKING FORMY COMPANY? Legally, apprentices must spend at least 20% of their time doing off the job training in colleges, carrying out e-learning courses and assessments etc. They must be paid at least the minimumwage for this time.

HOWWILL THE APPRENTICESHIP LEVY AFFECT MY BUSINESS? Any apprentice who is taken on from April 2017 onwards will be funded by the new Apprenticeship Levy. If you are not a levy paying company because your payroll is under £3m then the Government will pay 90% of the training fee and you will have to pay the remaining 10%.
