PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE April is finally here and that means warm weather and green grass are on the way. It has certainly been slow in coming as we suffered through Nor’easter March. The cold, rain and snow put us behind schedule for preparing the golf courses and tennis courts for play. However, staff has made adjustments to the work plan and schedule, and will have our grounds in prime condition as soon as possible.April also signals the start of the golf season and the Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Committees have put together a great calendar of events this year.A thank you to the men and women who represent our Club in the GAP matches. I hope you have had a chance to use the newly renovated Pub37. Pub37 has certainly become one of the busiest areas of the Club and the improved and expanded space should promote continued growth. Congratulations to Phil and his team for delivering this exceptional project on schedule. April is also one of the two times each year when we are asked to contribute to the Centennial Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship fund helps us attract and retain quality staff for all area of the Club and is another reason Wilmington Country Club is such a special place.Your support will be appreciated. If you have suggestions for how we can improve our Club, I would enjoy hearing from you. Gary Ferguson President

A NOTE FROM PHIL

Spring Greetings! Traditionally, this is the time of the year when outdoor activities begin to take precedent from those of a winter nature, and this year should be no different. That said, these late season snow events and sudden drop in temperatures have made preparations for the upcoming spring/ summer season a bit more challenging than we had hoped. Nevertheless, we are ready to take full advantage of any

Club, please be sure to keep yours in silent mode. Additionally, it is worth noting that this “silent” spirit extends to all electronic devices, in all areas of the Club. (Including a child’s game in any and all dining areas.) • The South Course opens for the season on Tuesday, April 10th. • The Ladies’ 18-Hole organization will have their kick-off event/ meeting on the 10th; the Ladies’ 9-Holers get started on the 11th. Men’s activity also gets started with GAP matches on the 22nd. Just as last year, the Men’s Opening Golf Event will be held later in the month, on Friday afternoon of the 27th. • Once the golf season gets underway, please keep in mind two simple thoughts. Carts damage turf, so please be mindful of how and where you drive yours. Also, play “ready golf ” and keep up with the group ahead of you! • Preparations are underway to ready the outdoor tennis courts for another season but, due to weather, conditions haven’t supported the process. We are working hard to get as many courts open as quickly as possible. The grass courts won’t open until May.We will also be getting Pickleball and Bocce established as soon as possible. • April begins a new food minimum cycle. If you are one of the few who failed to fulfill their minimum in the past, you may wish to reconsider how you have selected to satisfy your obligation. Perhaps switching to the prepaid annual option will be more effective. • The golf course snack bars will be open on the “honor system” for the first few weeks of the season until activity picks up when normal staffing will occur. • As your use of the Club increases, so does the traffic in the parking lots. Drivers - please slow down and always follow the marked directional flow; Pedestrians - use caution! • Please accept a gentle reminder that “the voice use of cellular telephones is prohibited at the Club”. If you are checking email, voice mail or texting, please use discretion being particularly sensitive to your surroundings, and again, always silence your device! If we see you using a cellphone inappropriately on the property, we are obligated to remind you of your policy and ask you to discontinue use. Members are urged to inform their guests of this rule. Please . . . don’t shoot the messenger. April promises to be an exciting month with lots going on. I hope you’ll find the time to enjoy your Club. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you at the Club. Phil Iannelli General Manager

good weather days that come our way and have every intention of meeting the spring schedule for golf and tennis events. This month’s Bulletin contains all the detail on spring programs, events and activities. While I hope you’ll take a moment to review it thoroughly, it seems that once again, I have a multitude of topics that are probably best shared as “bullet points”. Recognizing that all of them apply to some, and some of them apply to all, please read carefully to determine which are important to you. • Beginning Tuesday, April 3rd, full Clubhouse operations resume. This includes the return of daily lunch service in Café 1901 and Pub37. • Speaking of Pub37 - Thanks to all who have come out to support the reopening. It was great seeing you experience the new space and hearing all your comments. If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit, I suggest you place it high on your “to do” list. The general sense is that if you liked the Pub, you are going to love Pub37! •The 2018 By-laws/Rules handbook has been updated on the website and is in the process of being published. It will be distributed ASAP by placing one copy in the locker of each Senior member. Additional copies will be available at the Front Desk. • The roster of members is no longer published in printed form, but can be accessed through the website. A hard copy is also available at the Front Desk for member use, but it never leaves the Front Desk. •We are making another big push for all members to receive their end of month Club statements electronically. Aside from the “green” aspect of saving paper, the monthly billing process is very cumbersome and costly. There are a variety of electronic methods that you may use to keep your account current as well. • The same goes for the Monthly Bulletin. If you aren’t receiving this electronically, please consider changing. When you download it to your screen or mobile device, you get the added benefit of viewing it in glorious full color! And this costs us nothing. . . • Mentioning mobile devices triggered a reminder that when at the

Ben and Alma Schild first moved to the Barossa Valley from Lameroo in the Murray Mallee in 1952.The first vineyard that the family purchased is located up the top of Steingarten Road, near Rowland Flat, where the original homestead is still situated. In 1956 Ben Schild died suddenly and Ed, being the youngest of eight children and the only son to be living at home, stayed to run the family property at the age of 16. Ed Schild’s enthusiasm for the region, its offerings and vineyards saw him steadily grow the landholdings of the Schild Family, which today encompasses over 450 acres under vine. Within this large amount of land is one small patch of 160 year old shiraz vines which produces the iconic Moorooroo Shiraz. Ed and Lorraine have four children and eight grandchildren which ensures a strong family focus within the winery today. In 1998 the Schild Estate label was established and now is producing a total of 50,000 cases. In July of 2010 Valley of Hope Winery was opened and 2011 saw the first complete vintage come through its doors, with Chief Winemaker Scott Hazeldine leading the charge. Keith VanYahres Assistant General Manager

Schild Estate Unwooded Chardonnay, Barossa Valley 2017 Glass $7.75 / Bottle $29.00

Fragrant delicate floral notes of white peach, nectarines and stone fruit. Round and juicy mouth feel with a hint of cream and notes of tropical fruit and lemon citrus and some real balance.

Schild Estate GMS, Barossa Valley 2015 Glass $7.75 / Bottle $29.00

This blend of Grenache (52%), Mourvedre (24%) and Shiraz (24%) is an homage to the great wines of the Southern Rhone but with a very Barossan accent. These three classic red wine varieties are blended to showcase the unique qualities of each whilst ensuring balance, purity of fruit and the utmost drinkability. Inviting red fruit aromas of fresh cherries, red currants and raspberries combine with some blue fruit notes upfront before a hint of stony minerality and subtle notes of pepper spice, lavender and garrigue herb emerge from behind.

BOOK CLUB For our Tuesday, April 3rd selection we have chosen A Piece of the World , Christina Baker Kline’s fictional memoir of the woman in AndrewWyeth’s famous painting’ Christina’s World . Kline’s goal is to give flesh to the back story of the woman who crawls across a desolate field in this iconic painting. To Anna Christina Olson, the entire world was her family’s remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. From childhood, a progressive disease had hobbled Christina’s mobility, yet she stubbornly refused medical help and even the use of braces or a wheelchair. No one seemed to feel much pity for her, nor did she pity herself. She just carried on with the sheer physical toil that was required to survive in a home without electricity or running water. The arrival, in 1939, of twenty-two-year-old painter Andrew Wyeth who was summering with Christina’s friend, Betsy James, provided relief from isolation. Christina was a middle-aged woman when Wyeth first encountered her, and perhaps because they both had a physical disability and he was half her age, she might have been more open with him so that he saw her yearning, her determination, and her will to dream. Although she would never achieve status and fame on her own, throughWyeth’s painting, Christina’s World , she has become immortalized. Join us on the 3rd in the Ladies’ Locker Room as we discuss this finely drawn novel about hardscrabble lives, prairie grit and the seemingly small but significant beauties found there.

MAY BOOK CLUB

For May we have chosen Fredrik Bachman’s latest novel, Beartown, which tells a poignant story of a hockey-loving- town that is slowly dying. It seems the only way to save the town is for their junior hockey team to win the national championship, but when a scandal occurs involving the team’s star player, all hopes and dreams seem shattered. Backman’s rich characters, strong plot and gut-wrenching scenes of despair are certain to bring tears or sly chuckles - this unforgettable book is a must-read.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

GOLF CART BEST PRACTICES

With the opening of the South course on the horizon and the start to the golf season drawing near, we would like to extend a friendly annual reminder about the importance of golf cart traffic and the role it plays in turf health and course playability. It is most important to recognize the responsibility all cart operators have toward the goal of operating golf carts with care and common sense. This will help avoid unnecessary damage to turf and keep everyone safe. The following “Best Practices” for cart conduct will ensure these goals: GREENS, TEES, AND FAIRWAYS 1. Carts are restricted to paths only around all greens and through the following tees of all holes of the North Course and where ever available on holes of the South Course. 2. If no cart path is available, keep all carts at least 30 feet from greens

3. All carts should exit the fairway prior to the colored markers at the Green end of the fairway. The green colored marker is the exit side and the red colored marker, opposite the green marker, prohibits carts driv- ing beyond that point. The side of departure for any given day will almost always correspond to the side of the hole location on the Green. 4. Operate and park carts on the side of and outside the ball-washer/bench next to South tees. 5. Recognize and heed all written or direction cart signage. ROUGHS 1. Please drive carts in fairways and keep carts out of roughs as much as possible. When searching for a ball in the rough, please dismount the cart in the general vicinity (preferably in the fairway) in order to avoid injury from added aggressive cart turning. 2. At no time are carts allowed to enter NATIVE GRASS AREAS. 3. Condition of rough grass to the right of #1 South and to the left of #10 South is always challenged with added cart traffic created by travel to and from the Teaching Center. Cart paths on #1 and #18 North, or following the service road past the maintenance building are far better options to get back and forth without damaging these sensitive areas. GENERAL CONDUCT 1. Avoid reckless and damaging operation of carts, particularly under wet conditions, including sharp turns, rapid acceleration, or breaking, 2. Park carts on hard surfaces where available. 3. Avoid repetitious cart travel where cart tracks from previous activity are apparent... i.e. “scatter” traffic wherever possible when traveling on grass. 4. Refrain from using courtesy walking path from tee to fairway as a cart path. One additional area of concern going into this golf season is the right side rough of #14 South. The turf will now be maintained at a normal rough height and continuous golf cart traffic to the right side of the fairway bunkers will severely limit the playability of this area. The “Best Practice” will be to remain on the fairway to the left side of the bunkers with scattered traffic. Dan Pierson Director of Grounds

BOB'S COACHING CORNER: STOP THE CHILI DIPS

The Cause of the Chili Dip chip shot is when a player hits the ground with the club before the ball. The leading edge of the club digs into the turf, and the club head decelerates causing distance and directional issues resulting in poor short game shots around the greens. An effective cure for this is to neutralize the position of the lead hand on the club (weaken your grip). This will reduce the amount of cup in your lead wrist in the address position. This is important because it will produce a more consistent measure to the ball allowing for better ball/ground contact which is very important for delicate shots around the greens and good bunker play. Lastly, the weaker grip will allow the correct loft to stay on the club face through impact, not introduce the leading edge to dig or get stuck in the turf or sand, and allow the bounce angle of the club to work as engineered. Come visit the Golf Shop to get fit for your wedge, and visit a member of the Professional Staff to improve your technique. Bob Lennon Teaching Professional

Hope to see everyone on the courts. Ed McQuillin Racquets Director TIPS FOR SWITCHING FROM INDOOR TO OUTDOOR TENNIS PLAY • Have your racquet restrung. It is always a good idea to have your racquet restrung when you switch from indoor to outdoor tennis season. Strings become loose and less playable over a period like the indoor season.Your tension also changes from indoor to outdoor play. • Begin your warm up short court and progress to baseline rallies. Getting used to the courts and outside conditions i.e. wind, sun etc. always takes a while to feel comfortable. • Establish long deep rallies by aiming higher with more spin to improve your outdoor consistency. • Have a patient mind set since it is more difficult to end rallies on the outdoor clay courts. • Use more touch and finesse shots on the clay courts like drop shots and lobs. You have more time to set up for these shots on the slower clay courts. • Use more variety with your groundstrokes and serves to keep your opponent off balance and win matches. • Improve your conditioning since outdoor tennis rallies and matches last longer than indoor tennis play. SQUASH NEWS NATIONAL JUNIOR DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

ADULT SQUASH April - May

The National Junior Doubles Championships will be held Friday, April 13th - Sunday, April 15th here at Wilmington Country Club. This event was born at WCC in 1986 and has been hosted for 32 straight years. It was the brainchild of members Gerry Foulk, Bill Taylor and Joe Carbonell. They were avid doubles players and they wanted their children to learn and appreciate the game of doubles. They started a wonderful tradition for Wilmington Country Club. This is an event that juniors absolutely love to participate in as it is very social, tremendous fun and has no effect on the players’ singles rankings. Many juniors always comment that they wish they could play more doubles, and this is a perfect platform for them to showcase their skills. Many of our own junior members will be participating so come out to root them on! PHILADELPHIA SQUASH ASSOCIATION DOUBLES LEAGUE Wilmington Country Clubs Super B Squash DoublesTeam won the Philadelphia SquashAssociation Doubles League. In an exceptionally close battle against Berwyn Squash and Fitness club on Sunday March 11th, Scott Simonton and Bob Bolling won the first match of the day in three relatively close games. Great start for sure, but would it be enough? Andy Houston and Jason Clare had to go to the grind in order to take their match to the 5th game. They had 3 match balls against them in the 4th, but they had some good grit to hang on until late in the 5th when it slipped away. With the match score now 1-1, it all came down to Buzz Hannum Jr. and Halsey Spruance to win the decider. They went down 2-1 in games and then had two match balls against them in the 4th.With two very well played points they eeked out that game, and then played a strong 5th game to win the match and the over all championship. Congrats to all the team members:

BOCCE

We will begin our Bocce season on Tuesday, April 17th. Come out on Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm to learn the rules and subtle nuances of playing this wonderful Italian game. This favorite pastime is like lawn bowling, shuffleboard and curling all in one. There is no experience required and it is easy to learn and play. For light competitive fun, it is a chance to enjoy a fun social evening. The Bocce Courts are located perfectly for easy access to the pub for beverages and food. Our first two weeks will be introduction to the game along with some games. We would like to start a Bocce league, which would begin May 1st. Leagues are a great way to meet new players and have some competitive fun. This game was designed for group gathering and enjoyment. Come on out! Please sign up with the Racquets Shop [email protected] or if you have any questions please contact Ed Chilton [email protected] Just for your info, here are some interesting facts about the game: • Evidence of Bocce shows up as early as 5200 B.C. in Egypt. • The soldiers of the Roman Empire were responsible for the introduction of the game to other countries. • If a good stone were found, a Roman Soldier would polish it and carry it with him as they went from country to country. • Bocce balls were originally round stones. Some countries used coconuts as well. • The French Boule Balls are made of steel. • Most Bocce balls today are made from resin (like bowling balls).
