The future of hospitality is changing rapidly. With pent-up demand for traveling and eating out in what is hopefully the beginning of pandemic recovery, demand for hospitality services is on the rise. For example, according to the US Travel Association, "82% of American travelers are excited to travel in the next 12 months." But labor shortages, fueled by hospitality employees leaving the industry in an already tight labor market, mean that staffing is an issue more than ever before. So what does that mean for us as hospitality trainers?
Monique Donahue
Technology Organizations are dealing with staffing shortages by investing in technology to achieve greater efficiency. This introduction of technology-such as mobile check-in or robot room service in hotels, or QR codes for ordering and payment in restaurants-nearly always requires focused training in order to keep up with the changes.
The Human Touch Technology is also changing the way we interact with guests. As interaction with hospitality team members is in some cases reduced with the advent of new technologies, the human touch becomes even more critical, or we lose the very essence of "hospitality." Cue the hospitality trainers!
New Workers And finally, despite the labor shortage, the National Restaurant Association projects that the foodservice industry workforce will grow by 400,000 jobs by the end of 2022. It will be up to us to spin up that influx of new workers.

We need only look outside the site of our winter conference to see the boom that our industry is already experiencing. Las Vegas has just opened three new hotel-casinos, and there is a long list of construction and renovation projects well underway. COVID didn't destroy our industry, it merely paused it, and recruiters will have to partner with trainers to meet this rapidly growing demand.
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's how to be flexible and nimble. We've had a master class in how to creatively succeed, and now it's time for us to take that learning to seed the future of hospitality.
