In Memoriam KIT DAHL
Christopher "Kit" T. Dahl (1943-2022)was an incredible individual who helped so many in our community. Kit joined the TPT Board of Trustees in 2018 and co-chaired its strategic planning committee, resulting in TPT’s 2030 Roadmap released in January 2022. Kit provided unparalleled insight for the TPT leadership and did so with a smile. In addition to strategic planning, Kit served on TPT’s Governance, Audit & Risk and Executive Committees, as well as its CEO Search Committee in 2018-2020. Kit had a storied career. He founded the popular children’s broadcasting network, Radio AAHS, which reached millions of listeners nationwide at its peak. He was also the creative mind behind the hit TV show, “Six Million Dollar Man.” After graduating from the University of Minnesota, he joined the media department at Knox Reeves, where he became the youngest major brand Account Manager in the U.S. He was a kind man who was always made time for fun and sport. He piloted his own planes and boats, won tarpon fishing tournaments in the Florida Keys, loved to hunt in South Dakota, Canada, and Nicaragua, and enjoyed skiing and sailing. His obituary in the Star Tribune put it best: “His collection of close friends was immense and the connections he forged were deeply felt. Thoughtful, strategic, challenging in both business and personal relationships, he did not readily accept the easy answer, always probing for insights and evaluating risk. ‘Never make a move until you know your next two,’ he always said.” Kit will be dearly missed as a business partner, board member and friend.

APRIL 2022
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA
With spring comes the promise of new beginnings: Green buds appear on trees, vegetable plots are seeded by ambitious gardeners, animal babies abound, and the cycle of life starts anew. At TPT, we’re excited to announce our own brand-new multiplatform addition this spring: Minnesota Outdoors. We launch this new initiative by introducing Outside Chance , a web series featuring beloved, heart-pounding and in some cases, unconventional Minnesota outdoor activities hosted by yogi, emcee, rapper and outdoor enthusiast Chance York. This summer, we will premiere the TPT-produced national PBS television series America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston , who travels the country to reveal a deeper understanding of our passionate, yet complicated, relationship with the outdoors. We are thrilled to share these programs with all Minnesotans, so we can better understand the outdoors through a variety of perspectives. Discover more on pages 20 and 21 and on tpt.org/minnesotaoutdoors . This month also brings good news for our Ken Burns enthusiasts with the release of the much anticipated series on Benjamin Franklin, premiering on TPT 2 Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. The new series explores the revolutionary life of one of the 18th Century’s most consequential and compelling personalities, whose work and words unlocked the mystery of electricity and helped create the United States. April is a month of significant religious observation, and as I write this note in early March I can only hope that we all take time to reflect on what is essential for our families and friends, our communities and our world. Take a walk, hug a loved one, read a good book, go outside and tune in to incredible TPT programming.
As always, thank you for your support.
Best Regards, Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

To Bee or Not to Bee By Liane Kupferberg Carter
Spelling Bee, I just can't quit you.
I've been sucked into a black hole. Utterly possessed. Even in my sleep, I'm seeing honey- comb grids and combining letters. Last night I was so elated dreaming that I'd found the words "inculcate" and "indoctrinate" that it made me wonder if it's time for an intervention. For anyone living off the grid, let me enlighten you: The New York Times' Spelling Bee is a wildly addictive online word game. You earn points making as many different words as you can from seven letters arranged in a honeycomb. Letters can be used more than once. Every puzzle contains at least one pangram — a word using all seven letters — which bestows bonus points. You move through nine levels, from Beginner to Genius. Many puzzlers are satisfied to stop there. But if you're tenacious (or lucky) enough to find all the words, you achieve Queen Bee, which earns you bragging rights and a jaunty image of cartoon mascot Beeatrice wearing a crown. The first time I reached Queen Bee, I proudly posted the Beeatrice
image on Facebook. A friend responded, "Wow. I was just psyched today to find 'bacilli.'"
Spelling Bee allegedly contains easier words than those in the daily NYT crossword puzzle, and none that are obscure. Yet some of the so-called everyday words seem arcane or just bewildering. Words like anion. Deicide. Griot. Natant. Torii. Autodidactic (which at least was a recent pangram, so worth 19 points).
The first time I reached Queen Bee, I proudly posted the Beeatrice image on Facebook.
Still, I have questions. Why "doldrums" but not "doldrum"? Since when is "PFFT" an acceptable word? And what's with the archaic words? Attaint? Pettifog? Really? Months ago, I had such a surge of indignation (pangram, 18 points) about a word they rejected that I clicked the "Think we missed a word?" link. All I got was an autoreply thanking me for my interest. To Bee or not to Bee isn't the question. Even though it frequently frustrates and occasionally confounds, I'm unable to resist its siren song. How do I love thee, Spelling Bee? Let me count the ways.
Better yet, let me "enumerate" — because that's a pangram worth 16 points.

NEXT AVENUE - SPECIAL SECTION
Palliative Care is Not Just for the Dying By Nora Macaluso
Palliative care can provide relief to people with severe, but not necessarily life-ending, health conditions. But often patients — and their doctors — don't realize they can take advantage of a team-based treatment approach that may include social workers and community support. "The big misconception about palliative care in general is that you need to be dying to get it," said Dr. Andrew Esch, a palliative care specialist for the Center to Advance Palliative Care in Tampa, Fla. The pandemic has helped counter that view as physicians see the benefits to people living with COVID-19 and their families. A palliative care team aims to take a holistic view of the patient's world rather than focusing solely on treating the primary condition. Dr. John Mulder, of Spring Lake, Mich., executive director of palliative care training center Trillium Institute, uses "life-defining" or "life-altering" to identify conditions that might benefit from palliative care. "Many, many individuals as they navigate their lives are going to be diagnosed with something that is going to forever change them, and it's going to impact their longevity, impact their quality of life, and can place some burden of suffering upon them," he said. "What we do in palliative care is acknowledge the fact that we have something we can't fix," Mulder continued. "It might be modifiable, it might be manageable, but we can't fix it."
People with cancer, for example, can rely on the symptom-based approach of palliative care to build their strength so they're better able to withstand chemotherapy, he said. People with conditions like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease can also benefit, as can those with Alzheimer's disease. As Esch sees it, one of the real values of palliative care is "coordinating care and communicating with the patient's family and other clinicians" so "we're not doing things in silos," he said. "Palliative care takes the lead and makes it so the patient feels they have four doctors and nurse practitioners taking care of them, and they have four of them talking to each other." “Getting palliative services doesn't mean that you are somehow giving up on treating an illness. It's quite the opposite.”

TPT PRESENTS Minnesota Outdoors, A New Initiative
For centuries, humans have experienced a passionate and nuanced relationship with the outdoors. The natural world has inspired brilliant works of visual art, served as the backdrop of countless novels, films and podcasts, and most importantly, it is a force that we interact with each and every day. Living in nature provides countless joy-filled opportunities that also improve our wellbeing, especially in Minnesota. With our 10,000-plus lakes, pristine green spaces, prairies, forests and more, it’s easy to find a way to enjoy the world outside our doors. But the outdoors presents challenges for us as well – especially urgent is the changing climate and what will need to be done within our lifetimes to reverse the damage. Drought and unpredictable weather patterns, loss of some species and infestations of others, rising ocean waters and melting polar caps rank among the adverse consequences to the change in our Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.” – Edward Abbey
atmosphere. Without action, an enjoyable outside could become a distant memory for future generations.
Historically and today, distinct groups of people have also been excluded from feeling welcome in natural spaces and enjoying outdoor activities. Racial segregation has created inequities in accessibility and opportunities to comfortably experience outdoor spaces. When considering the great outdoors, we face dichotomy: Happiness and freedom for some, and challenges for others. That complexity has led TPT to launch a multi-year, multi-platform initiative focused on what is beyond our walls: the outdoors. Minnesota Outdoors is a new initiative grounded in our Strategic Plan that explores Minnesotans’ relationship with the outdoors – and the historic and contemporary factors that shape those relationships for different communities. Leveraging multiple media platforms, in-person events, and several engaging content projects, Minnesota Outdoors will help to create new narratives and to reclaim forgotten narratives about the outdoors as a space for all Minnesotans.
NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston The six-part national PBS production, America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston , alongside a companion digital series, premieres in July 2022 and follows host Baratunde Thurston on an adventure-filled journey to explore the diverse regions across the U.S. The series dives into the history of the landscapes and how they have impacted the way that Americans work, play and interact with the outdoors. One of the six episodes is based in Minnesota’s epic Boundary Waters Canoe Area, offering awe-inspiring views of our homeland and some unique opportunities to engage around the locations, people and activities featured in that episode.

MINNESOTA STORYTELLING
Outside Chance Whether participating or spectating, Minnesota is an endless playground for outdoor activities and traditions. Outside Chance — a web series featuring new and traditional outdoor activities – highlights Minnesota’s outdoor culture and is hosted by yogi, emcee, rapper, and outdoor enthusiast Chance York. SciGirls in the National Parks A new season of the TPT-produced, national series SciGirls will concentrate on exploring our nation’s great national parks and how science intertwines with the outdoors. The seventh season of the acclaimed series will follow real girls as they conduct citizen science in tandem with forest rangers in national parks. We’ll also feature special outdoors content from Minnesota Experience , Almanac , One Greater Minnesota , and Next Avenue to discuss planning, policy, and climate crisis awareness. These shows will also highlight the history of our state’s natural heritage and outdoors culture, and provide perspectives from Indigenous, BIPOC and immigrant community members.
TPT’s broadcast channels will also feature curated outdoors content for viewers across the state.
...AND MORE!
Stay tuned for more exciting elements that may include educational experiences and outdoor events like the “slow-roll” Biking Through History for Your Health adventure in 2021 and the Winter Warm-up event in 2022, both of which were partnerships with organization Melanin in Motion which aims to encourage BIPOC Minnesotans to enjoy the outdoors. Along the way, look for other opportunities to get involved with the TPT’s Minnesota Outdoors Initiative. We aim to inspire everyone to enjoy the outdoors, to explore our state’s wild spaces and to take a deeper interest in caring for this special place.
