AMAZING FACTS ABOUT The Lewis and Clark Expedition

I just finished a great book about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and thought I would share a few fun facts regarding their amazing journey of exploration. Lewis and Clark are in the top echelon of American heroes — and for good reason. Their incredible, 28-month, 8,000-mile expedition across a largely unknown portion of North America (from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back) in 1804–1806 is one of the most engrossing adventure stories in American history. Author Stephen C. Ambrose captures this incredible story in captivating detail in his book “Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West.” 1. The expedition would not have happened without the dedication of President Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was fascinated by the potential for scientific discovery during the expedition and specifically groomed explorer Meriwether Lewis for this expedition. Lewis met Jefferson’s famous colleagues while living as Jefferson’s aide. Lewis also used Jefferson’s extensive library and shared many of his interests, including the American West. Before the expedition, Jefferson sent Lewis to Philadelphia for cram courses with some of America’s experts on cartography, botany, anatomy, and astronomy — he wanted Lewis to acquire all the information possible about the geography, topography, climate, Indian tribes, minerals (as well as flora and fauna) of the lands that they would be traveling throughout the expedition. 2. Thomas Jefferson was convinced the explorers might run into mountains of salt, a race of Welsh-speaking Indians, and herds of wooly mammoths and giant ground sloths. The explorers didn’t discover any of these wonders, but they did find 178 previously unknown species of plants and 122 animals (including coyotes, mountain beavers, and grizzly bears).

3. Lewis brought with him a state of the art “air rifle” during the expedition which he used to impress Native Americans during their journey. After pumping compressed air into the gun’s stock, he could fire 20 shots — each of them almost completely silent. 4. The expedition likely would have failed except for a legendary Shoshone woman, Sacagawea. She was pregnant and delivered a son during the expedition. During the delivery, she consumed crushed rattlesnake rattles in water to speed her delivery. Sacagawea likely was the toughest member of the expedition, the lone female member of the crew who frequently served as an interpreter, smoothing relations with the explorers and the Indians they encountered on their journey. Amazingly, she traveled with Lewis and Clark from the Dakotas to the Pacific and back again, all the while carrying a newborn baby. 5. If Meriwether Lewis were alive today, he would undoubtedly be diagnosed with depression, possibly bipolar disorder. Tragically, he lived in an age during which medical science was unable to treat this disorder, and he ultimately took his own life. After the successful completion of the exploration, his condition worsened. He was twice prevented from committing suicide during an 1809 journey to Washington. Sadly, he was found dead only a few days later, with gunshot wounds to his head and chest, in a cabin along the Natchez Trace. Some have since speculated he was murdered, but most historians believe he took his own life.

6. Over the next two years, the explorers endured everything from dysentery and snakebites to dislocated

Are you headed to Lake Mead or Boulder City anytime soon? If so, Hemenway Park is a must see. The park offers spectacular views of Lake Mead and is comprised of 10 acres which include playground equipment, gazebos, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and two tennis courts. Hemenway Park’s Biggest Attraction EXPL RING LAS VEGAS

However, the biggest attraction at the park is the resident herd of bighorn sheep. These sheep often come down from the park and graze in the green grass. It is not unusual to see dozens of sheep within yards of park visitors. Boulder City recently announced that the park is getting a much-needed boost thanks to a $175,000 Bighorn sheep grant that was approved by Clark County. The project will include construction of walking trails and paths. It will also create watering holes and irrigation lines for the sheep.

Next time you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a stop to check out these amazing animals. As always, please be respectful to the wildlife!

CREATING THE PERFECT SNOWBALL FIGHT With No Snow at All An old-fashioned snowball fight is the epitome of winter activities. But if snowfall is lacking or it’s just too cold to venture outside and hurl freezing balls of ice at each other, don’t let it dampen your spirits. You can create and orchestrate your own indoor, snow- free, and entirely safe snowball fight. MAKE YOUR SNOWBALLS While craft stores sell large white cotton puffs that look like snowballs, they’re too light to get any good velocity behind them. Instead, make your own “snowballs” with just a few materials in four easy steps:

4. Cut between the two knots to snip off a tied-off snowball. Repeat these steps until you have at least a few dozen, but if you’re patient enough to make 100 or more, you’ll have ample supply for a substantial encounter. HOWTO PLAY There’s really no “right” way to have a snowball fight. It’s often just about who can hit whom the most, but if you want to turn it into a measurable competition, divide your group into two teams and distribute the snowballs evenly between them. Then create boundaries for each team by laying down masking tape across the room. Teams must stay on their side of the line at all times. Set a timer for however long you’d like the fight to go on, and at your signal, teams can start hurling snowballs across the room at one another. When time is up, gather and count the snowballs on each side, and the team with the fewest snowballs is the winner! A crafty indoor snowball fight can be a lot of fun for people of all ages, not just kids. Best of all, the crafting part is something you only have to do once, and then you have a stock of snowballs for every winter to come.

1. You’ll need a pair of scissors, several pairs of cheap white nylon

stockings (one pair can make about 10 snowballs), and a bag of polyester fiberfill, like Poly-Fil, or use the stuffing from a few old stuffed animals you no longer want.

2. Stuff a handful of the filling down into the end of one stocking leg and tie a knot, creating a round “snowball.”

3. Make another knot after the one you just made, leaving a little space between the two knots.

shoulders and even venereal disease. Incredibly, only one member of the expedition perished, likely from a burst appendix. One of the worst injuries came during the trip home when someone accidentally shot Lewis in the buttocks after likely mistaking him for an elk. Though not seriously wounded, Lewis was forced to spend a few miserable weeks lying on his belly in a canoe while the expedition floated down the Missouri River. No one ever admitted to shooting their leader in the butt.

7. This is not the only misadventure suffered by the intrepid Lewis. In the course of the expedition, Lewis managed to fall off a cliff, poison himself (when tasting mineral samples), spend a night being menaced by bizarre and possibly hallucinatory creatures, and get in a fight with an Indian youth over whether puppies made good eating.

If you’re a fan of American history, and you’re looking for a great read, I strongly recommend “Undaunted Courage.” –TomAskeroth

WORKERS’ COMP CORNER

Mileage Reimbursement

Injured workers in Nevada are entitled to mileage reimbursement under certain circumstances.

If an injured worker qualifies for reimbursement, the injured worker must send in mileage reimbursement requests within 60 days of incurring the mileage cost.

An injured worker qualifies for mileage reimbursement if they travel more than 20 miles one way for medical care. An injured worker may also qualify for reimbursement if they travel more than 40 miles in any given week (going to and from medical care).

If you send in mileage reimbursement forms each month, the adjuster only has to process one mileage check a month. It is also easier for you to keep track of what has been reimbursed.
