Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I have had an interest in human anatomy and the body as well as sports. The relationship and influence someone can have on athletes as an athletic training professional is comparable and powerful. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: Things fell into place and my family moved up here the year I transferred. Fun fact: I am a miracle baby as I was born premature. What setting would you like to work in? Why I want to be an athletic trainer: I had an amazing athletic trainer in high school who helped me overcome a serious injury both mentally and physically, and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Why I chose UW-Stevens Point: UWSP was close to home, and I knew the area well. Point also had an academically accredited program that would give me an amazing education to go with my degree. Fun fact: I’m the biggest soccer fan in the world but have never actually played soccer. Watching a country come together to celebrate something like that was awe-inspiring. What setting would you like to work in? I’d like to work in a professional setting for a pro team like the Green Bay Packers or a professional soccer team, but college/industrial is cool, too.

What has been your favorite experience in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience has been working with the women’s basketball team and any day that animals are brought in. I also liked when emergency medical staff would come in because I like unique learning experiences. What advice would you give someone looking to join our MS-AT program? Have a love for helping others as well as loving sports. If you’re interested in the program, I’d look into different outlets like the Sports Medicine Club or getting to know current students.

What has been your favorite experience in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience has been working with our women’s hockey team! Hockey is a sport that I had never experienced outside of watching on TV. The team was super welcoming and presented a lot of great opportunities to learn, have fun and make great connections with the players from the ice rink to the Sports Medicine Center. What advice would you give someone looking to join our MS-AT program? My advice to someone looking to join our MS-AT program is to observe a variety of settings or during different seasons. This will give you a lot of exposure to different sides of athletic training—daily operation, types of injuries, a range of age groups, and different approaches to the profession!

UWSP Softball, Marshfield Clinic

Where do you want to work in the future? After graduating, I would like to work in a collegiate setting. I have really enjoyed getting to know different patients and being close to sports each day. It is fun to see patients come back from injuries to compete and help them achieve the goals they set for themselves! What one interesting fact you’ve learned while in class? Something small but cool I learned in class is about the piriformis muscle. Normally muscles are stretched opposite of what motion they do, but the piriformis muscle—an external rotator in the hip—is the only muscle you stretch the same direction it creates motion!

He made it a really fun rotation and I learned a ton from him. What advice would you give someone looking to join our MS-AT program? Allow yourself to be open to failure, you are not going to know everything and having an open mind and trying new things even if you don’t do them right will help a ton.

UWSP Softball, UWSP Football

What has been your favorite experience in the MS-AT program? My favorite experience has been working with all of my athletes, last year especially because there was so much uncertainty. The more you know the deeper you can explore areas of interest and career opportunities.
