HELPING PATIENTS WITH THE TREATMENTS THEY NEED PUTTING MY EXPERIENCE TO WORK
When I first entered college, I planned to pursue a career in the medical field but wasn’t exactly certain which area of patient care I wanted to pursue. I don’t have any family members in the medical field, so I felt like I was going in blind — until I discovered the world of dentistry. Throughout my life, my exposure to the dental field was limited to just routine cleanings. It wasn’t until I did some more research on what a dental career offers that I realized my true passion for dentistry. My initial exposure to dentistry was actually here at Beaumont Family Dentistry. When I came in to shadow for the first time, I literally knew nothing about dentistry. I thought a crown was something a king wore and a bridge was a structure you walked or drove on. Little did I know that dentistry aligned very well with the desires I had for a career. After spending a lot of time in the practice, I realized I was interested in everything dentistry had to offer. Dentistry combines art, science, medicine, business, and many other aspects that are appealing to me, and that sparked my passion. During dental school, I discovered the many different facets of dentistry, and I was keen to learn as much as I could about every area I could. Following dental school, I decided to do a one-year, hospital-based residency, where I gained additional experience and education, especially in dental surgeries and IV sedation. The residency, along with other
and put my education and experience to work for my patients. I am fortunate to be at an office where the doctors are very committed to furthering their knowledge and clinical skills through continuing education. We are dedicated to learning the newest techniques and investing in technologies that allow us to offer the best treatments possible to our patients. I’m proud to not only offer general services to my patients but to also offer my knowledge of IV sedation and surgical procedures, among other things. Helping people obtain the smiles they want means a lot to me. These treatments are truly life-changing for many of our patients, and I’m proud to be here to help them through it.

continuing education, allowed me to gain further experience and training in various areas of surgery, including implants, which I have a strong passion for. IV sedation is very important to me because there are many people out there who are so afraid of coming into a dental office that they have a genuine phobia. I learned that when someone needs general dental work done and they have severe anxiety about the dentist, there are not many options for them to receive treatment. These people know how important visiting the dentist is, but it can be very hard to overcome their fear. However, IV sedation allows us to see those patients and complete the work they need done while enabling them to be more relaxed and comfortable while in the office.

STACY COLEMAN AND THE LEXINGTON TEAM GIVING OUR CLIENTS THE BEST SERVICES AND RESULTS
Studies show that up to 50% of young children have imaginary companions, ranging from entirely conjured entities to beloved stuffed animals. The popular social stigma around imaginary friends is that these children must be shy or lonely, but psychologists disagree. In fact, if your child develops an imaginary friend, most psychologists say it’s an activity you should promote instead of discourage. Psychologists claim that the invention of an entire friendly persona points to the fact that the child is both creative and highly social. Imaginary scenarios also give kids an opportunity to indulge in their wildest aspirations, like going to the moon or inventing a time machine. Their creativity gives them the ability to dream, explore, and experiment in useful ways. Imaginary friends can also be there to comfort your child when they’re feeling down or experiencing a tantrum, which is helpful when they are learning how to manage their emotions. There are also many ways parents can take part in interactions with imaginary friends to strengthen their own relationship with their child. Imaginary friends can make interactive play more meaningful and can be useful in accomplishing daily routines, like cleaning up or getting ready for bed. They also provide a window into the way your child’s mind works by encouraging the vocalization of thoughts and feelings they may not otherwise share. Imaginary friends are often a proxy for the children who invent them, so the conversations your child has with or about their friend can provide a lot of insight into how your child views the world and themselves. Imaginary friends are so important to how some children learn and grow that they’ve been featured in pop culture for many years. Entertainment like “Calvin and Hobbes,” “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” and even adult shows like “Supernatural” — which featured an episode about a main character’s childhood imaginary friend returning to teach him valuable lessons as an adult — portray the inventors of imaginary friends as outgoing and creative. It just goes to show that letting the imagination run wild not only encourages healthy development but can also lead to lots of fun. THE POWER OF PRETEND IMAGINARY FRIENDS PROMOTE REAL LIFE SKILLS
When Stacy Coleman was younger, she always had an
interest in dentistry. As a child, she had problems with her teeth, which led to a fascination with getting those problems corrected. Every visit to the dentist was exciting for her, as she was eager to learn more about what they did and how they could help her obtain a brilliant smile. “And it escalated from there,” Stacy says. “When I was older, choosing dentistry as my profession was a natural choice.”
When she entered school, Stacy found herself drawn toward a different area of dentistry than she expected. “Originally, I thought I would be involved with dental sales and even got a marketing degree,” Stacy explains, “but I kept finding myself pulled toward the clinical aspect of the dentistry field, so I just kind of stayed there. I’ve been doing dentistry for over 20 years, and I’ve never had one dull moment in the work I do. It’s wonderful.” Stacy has been part of our team here at Beaumont Family Dentistry for the past five years. Working in our Lexington office as a dental assistant, she uses her expertise and passion for her work to ensure each of our patients receives the smile they need. “The best part about what I do here is seeing our happy patients and giving them a great and healthy smile. Ultimately, our focus is on patient care, and we do everything we can to ensure that. But I also really enjoy building relationships with them. It’s really nice when they keep coming back, and I get to know them.” Working beside the entire team — Carol, Maddy, Panda, Whitney, Katie, and Natalie — Stacy feels right at home. “Everyone works really well together; we all know the routine and how to follow it. Every morning, we get together and plan our day to make sure everyone knows what to do or where to help. Even if some of us are technically only one doctor’s assistant, we never hesitate to jump in to help when we see someone needs an extra hand.” Each of our team members at our Lexington office and TMJ and Sleep Dentistry Center is a dedicated individual just like Stacy. They are here to help you with all your dental and oral health needs.

MANAGE YOUR DENTAL ANXIETY HOW SEDATION DENTISTRY CAN HELP YOU
Sedation dentistry allows many patients to relax during an otherwise high-stress situation and gives them the feeling of a shorter visit. A dental procedure that may take an hour or more can seem to only last a few short minutes. Though sedation can help patients through their appointments, many people are still hesitant to accept this type of treatment. It’s the wish of every dentist at each of our dental offices, as well as the American Dental Association (ADA), to ensure the safe and effective use of sedatives. The ADA states, “The administration of local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia is an integral part of dental practice.” This is a sentiment that Beaumont Family Dentistry shares. Each of our dentists is trained in providing this type of care to any patient who wishes to have it. If you are interested in learning more about sedation and if it is right for you, visit our website at BeaumontFamilyDentistry.com and contact us today.
A person who’s had a bad experience with the dental field often becomes anxious about, or even fearful of, going to the dentist. While this is a natural reaction, it means that their oral health will start to diminish over time, especially if they neglect their biannual checkups. Luckily, there are ways to help people relax and greatly reduce the anxiety they feel about visiting the dentist. One such method is sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry uses a variety of techniques to reduce stress and allow patients to feel calm during their dental visits, no matter what procedure they are undergoing. Dentists can use nitrous oxide or “laughing gas,” anesthesia, and other sedatives either through inhalation, IV, or oral sedation, depending on patients’ needs and preferences. The technique used also determines the level of sedation, which could be mild, moderate, or deep.

TAMA, THE CALICO
THE FIRST FELINE STATIONMASTER IN ALL OF JAPAN
The same year it became unstaffed, residents living near the station asked the president of the Wakayama Electric Railway, Mitsunobu Kojima, to revive the station because the cat’s survival depended on it. It turns out Tama’s original owner had asked the railway workers to care for her before he moved away — he couldn’t bear to take her from the station she loved to visit so much. So, Kojima decided to go meet Tama. He liked her immediately and adopted her. A year later, Tama was officially named the Stationmaster of Kishi Station, the first cat stationmaster in Japan. To complete her look, Kojima gave her a small conductor hat to wear as she greeted commuters from her window perch inside the ticket gates. As an official stationmaster, Tama became well known all across Japan and throughout the world. She appeared in the media and on
promotional materials that soon brought much- needed foot traffic to Kishi Station. Thousands of tourists came rushing to Kishi to see Tama for themselves, ride the Tamaden carriage, and pick up Tama merchandise inside the station. Tama brought joy to all commuters for the next several years before passing away in 2015. Nearly 3,000 people attended her funeral, and her legacy lives on. Tama’s successors continue as stationmasters: Nitama, who serves as Kishi stationmaster, and assistant Yontama at Idakiso, five stations away. Tama’s friendly and loving nature impacted many people around her, and she will always be affectionately known as the cat who saved the Japanese train station.
During the mid-2000s, the Kishi Train Station in Japan began to deteriorate. By 2006, Kishi Station was left completely unstaffed because of low ridership and financial problems. However, one last resident still remained after everyone else was long gone: a black, white, and tan cat named Tama. Tama first appeared at the station as a young cat in the late 1990s. She lived near the train station and would visit commuters daily to receive affection and the occasional treat. But, as it turned out, her continued visits to Kishi Station would end up playing a much bigger role for the station.
