CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT At Beehive Industries, we continue to prioritise the welfare of the ‘Beehivers’ and to expand our advocacy for greater community engagement in social issues affecting seniors, the long-term unemployed and persons living with disability. At Beehive Industries, we continue to prioritise the welfare of the ‘Beehivers’ and to expand our advocacy for greater community engagement in social issues affecting seniors, the long-term unemployed and persons living with disability. Beehive’s purpose is to foster a sense of identity and self -worth and to enable our Beehivers to contribute to society in valuable and meaningful ways. Core to our ability to achieve this is our capacity to operate within a financially self-sustaining business model in response to an ever-changing government funding environment. I’m delighted to report that we achieved a record turnover in the 2018/19 Financial Year, bringing us considerably closer to our goal of complete independence from ongoing government funding. This positive result has allowed us to boost our capital reserve funds to provide certainty for future operations. Pleasingly and more importantly, it has also allowed us to make a number of significant improvements in the quality of the services and facilities we provide for our Beehivers, most notably infrastructure upgrades to our building to improve safety and comfort and the supported purchase of a new, modern bus equipped with air conditioning, much to the delight of Beehivers for their outings. This stable and significant growth in turnover has also facilitated additional events and activities for Beehivers and will allow us to expand our offerings into the future, at a time when the need within the communities we support is growing. We could not have achieved this record result alone; it has come through the tremendous efforts of the Beehivers, our longstanding employees, valuable partners, sponsors, many clients and the board. The City of Sydney must be thanked for their consistent support and belief in Beehive Industries; their backing of our centrally located premises is a factor in our success. I would also like to thank Telstra for their long-term partnership that has moved into new lines of work as business needs evolve. We enjoy strong relationships with our valued clients who engage our services, including the NSW Department of Industry, RMS, Service NSW, the Fair Trading NSW, Racing NSW and many others. Konica Minolta has played an important role in helping with diversification of services. Favourable arrangements have permitted us to introduce a commercial

print division to complement our packaging and assembly expertise and expand our client offering. The Star, OzHarvest and HLB Mann Judd are acknowledged for their continued support of Beehive Industries and the for- purpose sector broadly. We’re also very pleased with the developing relationships with the Sydney Swans and Legacy. A strategic priority for the year has been to increase our corporate involvement and to promote the importance and benefits of social procurement across the business and academic sectors. I’d like to acknowledge our new supporters, in particular Westpac, Stockland and UTS for their genuine engagement. This will continue to be an area of particular focus in the coming year as we look to roll out tangible programs that facilitate meaningful corporate-sector and university engagement with the for-purpose sector. We passionately believe that the two sectors cannot be working in isolation and need to foster legitimate partnerships for the betterment of society generally. Pleasingly, our efforts are being recognised externally; we were very proud to win the “Excellence in Social Enterprise” category at NSW Business Chamber S ydney City Business awards in July 2018 and be State Finalist in the NSW Business Chamber Awards in November. I was very humbled to be named “CEO of the Year” at the Third Sector Awards in September and nominated in the Pro Bono Impact 25 Awards in January 2019. While it’s fulfilling to have the work we are doing here at Beehive Industries being recognised at prestigious state and national awards ceremonies, it’s also very valuable as it is helping our voice be heard. I continue to remain a passionate advocate for the NFP sector and have delivered multiple presentations to university and corporate audiences to foster the relationships so vital to creating a more equitable and respectful environment that allows individuals like the Beehivers to find their place in society. Other notable achievements during this financial year have included receiving third party verification accreditation against the NSW Disability Service Standards in July 2018 and launching a new, vastly improved website to help further expand our profile. Through much effort and hard work, we headed into the new financial year in a much brighter position than the last as we forge a positive future focused on deeper and expanding partnerships, always with the benefit to our Beehivers firmly at the core. Brendan Lonergan CEO

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT It gives me great pleasure to report as Chair of Beehive Industries, for the past 2018/2019 Financial Year - representing the 48th year of our evolving social enterprise - serving the interests of Beehivers. The challenge for CEO and Board, in better serving Beehivers, is to continually address change in the economic environment that we as a Not-for-Profit (NFP) operate within. One of the tools available is to raise our profile, so that more in the broader community know of the value and quality Beehive is able to deliver to their various businesses. I am therefore very pleased indeed to congratulate Brendan Lonergan for winning the Third Sector CEO of 2018 Year Award in September last year. This achievement then prompted high-profile political and social advocate Kathryn Greiner to make her second visit to our premises the following month, to update herself on all-that-was-new and going on. It is also noteworthy that earlier in the year in July, Brendan received an official congratulatory letter from Sydney City Council on being a Finalist in the Excellence in Social Enterprise category of the 2018 Sydney City Business Awards. We went on to win this award, again raising our profile to aid and enhance the lives of Beehivers. Our premises here are in need of continual maintenance and improvements, so as to provide a safer, more efficient activity-centred environment, plus of course: to become cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Beehivers are now experiencing these improvements, particularly in this year of reporting. It was also very pleasing during the year for Management and the Board to receive an ‘A’ rating for Council’s Accommodation Grants Program confirming all processes of compliance were being met. Your Board has the need to continually revitalise itself as well. As a consequence, I am absolutely delighted to introduce three new Board members to their very first Annual General Meeting of Beehive Industries: Adrienne Revai, an executive director of her current employer and local resident in the Paddington/ Darlinghurst area, Ian Robinson, having an economics and financial background in the Australian Public Service in the ACT, Peter Mackey, a senior executive with the NSW Department of Industry and also former Australian diplomat having experiences in trade and business internationally. I might add, we had a very constructive and timely Beehive Industries Strategy Induction morning to better introduce new Board members to our business op erations at the Australian Institute of Company Director’s premises in June.

Most of you would be aware that our enterprise has been honoured that successive NSW State Governors have graciously accepted the position of our Patron. We now thank the 39th Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC for also bestowing this honour upon Beehive Industries, with her tenure commencing in May 2019. I want to again thank all my fellow directors for their respective contributions throughout the year. In conclusion, I wish to formally thank Brendan Lonergan for his leadership and innovations, and to each of his management team and staff for their very evident - conscientious, professional approaches to the noble cause of running and improving Beehive for the Beehivers. Thank you all, Gerard (Gerry) Johnston Chairman

OUR CORE SERVICES At Beehive Industries we do more than deliver high quality packaging, assembly and fulfilment solutions. We provide a safe place for seniors, long term unemployed and people living with disability to work, laugh and learn each and every day. 1 in 4 Australians aged 60 and older live alone. Seniors who feel lonely and isolated are more likely to report also having poor physical and mental health. At Beehive, we believe social procurement is a win for business and community. Our clients’ business helps us foster a sense of identity and self-worth for each of our Beehive members. We support physical and mental wellbeing, provide a sense of purpose. THE IMPACT WE HAVE In 2018/19, Beehive Industries enriched the lives of seniors by providing balanced nutritious meals, cooking programs and social events. We also provide employment readiness training to long-term unemployed people via our Beehive2Work program. Here’s a snapshot of what we have achieved...

18,057 meals served (breakfast & lunch)

24,500 kg of food given away

9,504 support days

cooking & English classes 52

20 outings & special events

$125 support cost per Beehiver per day

OUR SOCIAL IMPACT: CHANGING LIVES Our Beehivers are at the centre of all our programs. Monitoring the impact of the support we provide is very important. As such, in 2018 we had an independent service evaluation conducted by a University of NSW Social Work student to quantify the effectiveness of our programs in addressing social isolation and related health outcomes. We sought to confirm: ❖ Whether seniors who are actively engaged in the services offered at Beehive utilise public sector health and social care service resources more or less than their less socially engaged peers; ❖ Whether the social support provided by Beehive Industries enables older people to remain in their homes for a longer period of time as well as utilise less government funded resources such as acute medical care, home care or residential care. Some of the key findings indicated the impact of our services: ❖ 70% of respondents reported their health had remained stable in the time they had attended Beehive, while 25% claimed that their health had improved, indicating the benefits of a social support service on physical and mental health ❖ 32% reported that since using the service, they had been making less frequent visits to the doctors (noting the average age of respondents was 73.5, average length of service 7.25 years) ❖ Participants reported not having time to think about any physical ailments they may be experiencing as they are socialising ❖ 89% of participants agreed that through the positive impact Beehive has offered them socially, mentally and physically, they can remain living independently in their homes longer. They attributed this to factors such as purpose, routine, social engagement and activities. ❖ 89% reported having good social lives within the Beehive community 100% agreed attending Beehive relieved loneliness 97.5% said that Beehive had made a positive impact in their life “I don’t think about what’s wrong with me here, I don’t think about my anxiety, my blood pressure is lower, my friends here make me laugh. I love to laugh…” A Beehiver
