Wasatch Container Expands, Diversifies Inside And Out BY REBECCA RENDON Salt Lake City based, Wasatch Container, continues to grow and diver- sify their product offering with an expansion of their existing plant, the acquisition of a stock box company and purchasing a BW Papersys- tems MiniPro.

SCT To Invest $85M In In New Tennessee Plant

Chattanooga, Tennessee based Southern Champion Tray (SCT) plans to invest nearly $85 million in a new manufacturing plant in the Centre South Riverport Industrial Park, where it will create more than 120 jobs. The 93-year-old independent converter, which manufactures paperboard packaging products including food sleeves, trays, and window boxes, already employs over 750, in- cluding more than 500 in Chattanooga. The new manufacturing facility will convert paper- board into packaging products. Construction will begin in early 2021 with completion ex- pected by early 2022. John Zeiser, SCT President and CEO said the company is purchasing a 56.4-acre tract to support the continued expansion of the company’s manufacturing operation. “We are bursting at the seams where we are, so we have to expand,” said Zeiser.” Brian Hunt, the company’s COO, said the move is “a vote of confidence for every cur- rent SCT employee, as well as the 120 new employees that we will be adding.” “After 93 years of continuous growth, we are excited to build another facility to support

“In today’s climate, diversification is so important for companies. This started as ‘Jerry’s dream of the future’ and has evolved into some- thing that we feel is sustainable and different than what others in the industry are doing,” says Jerry Frisch, owner of Wasatch Container. With goals of expansion and diversifying their product offering, the team at Wasatch Container took their time in researching box making machines. With e-commerce and a niche customer base in mind, they ultimately decided to purchased a new BW Papersystems MiniPro sin- gle pass flexo folder gluer, with die cut section. “This MiniPro is the first of its kind on the West coast and has really opened doors for us here. It’s a rocket ship,” says Frisch. “We wanted a machine that would make small, trendy boxes to bet- ter serve the e-commerce market,” says Frisch. “The machine’s ability to print three colors outside and one color inside is what peaked our interest initially, but the ergonomics, safety, speed and BW’s ability to install on a tight timeline is ultimately what led us to choose this partic- ular machine,” explains Ryan Jones, Plant Manager at Wasatch. many more years of serving customers with great packag- ing and distinctive service,” he said. SCT’s purchase of the property is subject to completion of due diligence which is expected to finish by early 2021, officials said. “Tennessee’s economy will continue to rebound be- cause companies continue to invest and create jobs in our state,” Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said in an announcement of the project. “Southern Champion Tray’s expansion will provide a boost to Hamilton County and surrounding ar- eas, and I appreciate the company for choosing to grow in Tennessee.” Earlier this summer, Southern Champion Tray acquired another longtime packaging company, Honeymoon Paper Products Inc., a 60-year-old business based in Fairfield, Ohio. Honeymoon is a packaging provider to supermarket and retail bakeries and wholesale companies. It employs about 150 people. According to SCT, it was to integrate that company’s catalog of items into its offerings. Zeiser said then that the acquisition made a lot of sense for Southern Champion and Honeymoon customers as the deal expanded the breadth of its product line and scope of its manufacturing capabilities. With its new plant, SCT will have four facilities in Chatta- nooga, with its headquarters located at 220 Compress St. off Manufacturers Road.

AICC Adds Hybrid Courses To Online And Distance Learning Opportunities AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has add- ed hybrid courses to the lineup of online and distance learning opportunities. A hybrid event may include pre-work, homework, work- books, group work and activities. There is a live-online por- tion of the training, which takes place over multiple days, with industry presenters. After the course is completed, there are also follow-up activities, like a group forum or coaching. “In these unusual times, AICC is expanding its edu- cational mission in new and diverse ways,” said Michael D’Angelo, President, AICC. This allows us to provide the members with a broad range of knowledge, tools, and experiences they can use to forge success. AICC hybrid

courses are multi-faceted and offer the experiential en- gagement necessary for the member to become quickly proficient with the content being offered.” In late September, The Leadership Mirror will give lead- ers a clear view of their current skills and any potential gaps in communication, decision-making, and managing change. October brings Maximize Sales Results: Develop New Sales Skills for Today’s Market, which will offer intensive training to help salespeople and sales managers under- stand the technology and relationship-building skills need- ed for a more virtual world. In November, AICC will offer Corrugated Essentials. This classic AICC program has been revamped to provide the exploration of corrugated packaging traditionally of- fered during this popular seminar as a hybrid event. Also during November, Financial Reporting and Analyt- ics for Converters: Level 1 will help converters understand financial metrics and what they mean.

Additional hybrid events are scheduled in January on Corrugated Printing and Digi- tal Applications in Printing. More information about upcoming hy- brid events and all the virtual training AICC offers can be found at www.AICCbox.org/ calendar. Cascades To Close Ontario Containerboard Plant Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cas- cades Inc. has announced that it will close its Etobicoke, Ontario Containerboard packaging facility as part of the strategic re- positioning of its Containerboard platform in Ontario and the Corporation’s continuing global optimization initiatives. “An integral part of our strategic plan is to optimize our operational platform in Ontario,” said Charles Malo, President and COO. “As a result, we will be gradually rede- ploying production from the Etobicoke facil- ity to our other units within the region. This decision will reinforce our operational po- sitioning for mid and long-term success by better aligning present production capaci- ties, improving productivity, reducing fixed costs and further strengthening our service offering for our valued customers.” The Etobicoke Containerboard Packag- ing operations will permanently close no later than August 31, 2021, and the property will be put up for sale. Cascades will work to minimize the impact of this announcement on the 125 employees impacted.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Web is in contact to less flute tips compared to bar systems. • High precision glue application • Less moisture applied to web —No wear of shoes and springs —No adjustment of shoes or paper gap —Uniform glue application over entire working width for all flutes by use of pneumatic cylinders instead of springs — Less contamination by paper dust and glue remains —No jam of board because of web breaks caused by splice joints going through 630-784-0800 Benefits —Rollers secure exact defined first point of contact of liner and single-faced board - No double kiss —Frame design avoids unintended lifting of roller shoe (compared to spring or air loaded systems) - No double kiss —Pressure can be increased or released for special grades or products 490 Tower Blvd., Carol Stream, IL Contact Chicago Electric to GET IT RIGHT 630-784-0800 [email protected] chicagoelectric.com Solution The ProPress system ensures an optimum heat transfer to the board. It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Pressure Shoe

Plate vity Issue—Poor Heat Control l hotplates are slow to react to pressure due to high steam volume and massive y also have high heat radiation and heat profile. Worn plates can damage crease edge crush.

Domtar To Convert TN Paper Mill To Produce Recycled Containerboard Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar announced on August 8 that it will convert a printing and writing paper mill in Kingsport, Tennessee, to produce recycled pack- aging using OCC and mixed paper. The mill, which has been idled since April due to declining customer de- mand, will be converted to produce recycled linerboard and medium materials The conversion will take 28 to 31 months to complete and is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2023, at the latest, according to Domtar. “Once in full operation, the mill will produce and mar- ket approximately 600,000 tons of high-quality recycled linerboard and medium, providing the company with a strategic footprint in a growing market,” according to a Domstar spokesperson. The mill will use about 660,000 tons per year of OCC and mixed paper as feedstock. The recycled fiber con- version will cost between $300 million and $350 million. The mill project joins a growing list of facilities converting or being developed to produce containerboard to satis- fy the demand for packaging for e-commerce, which has only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Domtar operates 13 pulp and paper mills in North America.
