ICPF Corporate Partners Hire The Industry’s Next Generation BY LEN PRAZYCH The 2020 corrugated packaging “hiring season” for student interns and new graduates has been one of the most tumultuous and uncer- tain in more than 60 years. Student internships in some regions have been eliminated or reduced to ensure safety and health. For the same reasons, the hiring of new graduates in some areas has been post- poned. However, throughout the country the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation’s (ICPF) corporate partners have been creative by making modifications to continue recruiting the next generation of managers and executives. The resilience of the corrugated packaging industry brings to mind the banner currently displayed at the entrance of the WestRock mill in Hopewell, Virginia: “Tough Times Don’t Last, Tough Teams Do!” ICPF continues its mission to promote the corrugated packaging in- dustry to students and the talent pool for the next generation continues to grow. Here are the stories of some of the students recently recruited by the industry through ICPF so far this season: Emily VanderMoere , Michigan State Uni- versity (Packaging Science Major – May ‘20) has accepted a position with Green Bay Pack- aging as a structural designer. “I feel very for- tunate to have a job right after graduation and that’s thanks to ICPF” she says. “The Student/ Executive Dialogue Dinners in 2019 and 2020 were extremely beneficial to me by hearing advice from industry leaders and expanding my network. At ICPF’s dinner this past Febru- ary, I met a Green Bay Packaging executive, which led to being hired Emily VanderMoere
ISM: Manufacturing Grows Again In June
Economic activity in the manufacturing sec- tor grew in June, with the overall economy notching a second month of growth after one month of contraction, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Re- port On Business. The report was issued last week by Tim- othy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the In- stitute for Supply Management (ISM) Manu- facturing Business Survey Committee: “The June PMI registered 52.6 percent, up 9.5 percentage points from the May reading of 43.1 percent. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the second straight month after April’s contraction, which ended a period of 131 consecutive months of growth. “The New Orders Index registered 56.4 percent, an increase of 24.6 percentage points from the May reading of 31.8 percent. The Production Index registered 57.3 per- cent, up 24.1 percentage points compared to the May reading of 33.2 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 45.3 percent, an increase of 7.1 percentage points compared to the May reading of 38.2 percent. The Em- ployment Index registered 42.1 percent, an

Comments from the panel were positive (1.3 positive comments for every one cau- tious comment), reversing the cautious trend which began in March. The manufacturing sector is reversing the heavy contraction of April, with the PMI increasing month-over- month at a rate not seen since August 1980, with sever- al other indexes also posting gains not seen in modern times. Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index growing at a respectable level, supported by New Export Orders Index contraction softening; (2) Customers’ Inven-

Oxytech Systems UV Light Technology Fights COVID-19
Supporting the printing and graphic arts industry for over 70 years, Carpentersville, Illinois based Oxytech Systems is helping companies like SG360° keep their operations running by using its ultraviolet light technology to quickly and efficiently sanitize their facilities against Covid-19. Ultraviolet (UV) light is a form of light that is invisible to the human eye. It occupies the portion of the elec- tromagnetic spectrum between X-rays and visible light. Broad-spectrum UV light, which has a wavelength of be- tween 200 to 400 nanometers (nm), is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying molecular bonds that hold their DNA together. This conventional UV light is routinely used to decontaminate surgical equipment. UV offers a key advantage over chemical based dis- infection. Unlike chemical approaches to water disinfec- tion, UV provides rapid, effective inactivation of micro- organisms through a physical process. When bacteria, viruses and protozoa are exposed to wavelengths of UV light, they are rendered incapable of reproducing and infecting. UV light has demonstrated efficiency against pathogenic organisms, including those responsible for cholera, polio, typhoid, hepatitis and other bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases. 40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE
Design & Production
Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate
Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.
This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.
The system’s main advantages are as follows:
• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”
6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Web is in contact to less flute tips compared to bar systems. • High precision glue application • Less moisture applied to web —No wear of shoes and springs —No adjustment of shoes or paper gap —Uniform glue application over entire working width for all flutes by use of pneumatic cylinders instead of springs — Less contamination by paper dust and glue remains —No jam of board because of web breaks caused by splice joints going through 630-784-0800 Benefits —Rollers secure exact defined first point of contact of liner and single-faced board - No double kiss —Frame design avoids unintended lifting of roller shoe (compared to spring or air loaded systems) - No double kiss —Pressure can be increased or released for special grades or products 490 Tower Blvd., Carol Stream, IL Contact Chicago Electric to GET IT RIGHT 630-784-0800 [email protected] chicagoelectric.com Solution The ProPress system ensures an optimum heat transfer to the board. It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Pressure Shoe

John Dziedzic, Managing Partner and owner, said that a significant body of scientific research has proven UV light’s ability to inactivate an extensive list of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa. UV light, specifically be- tween 200-280nm[i] (UVC or the germicidal range), inac- tivates (aka, ‘kills’) at least two other coronaviruses that are near-relatives of the COVID-19 virus: 1) SARS-CoV-1[ii] and 2) MERS-CoV[iii] [iv] [v]. The effectiveness of UV light in practice depends on factors such the exposure time and the ability of the UV light to reach the viruses. Jack Karas, Managing Partner and owner, commented that according to AFP Fact Check, “Ultraviolet is able to kill COVID-19 if it is exposed to the concentrated UV ray in a certain amount of time and distance. Most likely, it will be in the light bulb or lamp as the natural UV from the sun is not strong enough to kill it.” “What makes Oxytech’s product unique and useful to us is the 800-watt output,” said Randy Scamacca, Vice President, Corporate Engineering for SG360°. “This is an industrial strength device that allows us to disinfect large areas quickly and efficiently, including equipment that otherwise would not be possible to address. In my mind Oxytech’s UV sanitizing system was a game chang- er in our effort to create a safe workplace and shows how committed we are to keeping our employees safe.” See www.oxytechsystems.com or call (847) 888-8611.

Menasha Packaging Wins 14 Shop! Retail Association Awards Wisconsin based Menasha Packaging Company, one of the industry’s largest retail-focused packaging and mer- chandising supply chain solutions provider, was awarded one gold, four silver, seven bronze, and two budget OMA Awards on June 22-25 from Shop!, the global trade as- sociation dedicated to enhancing retail environments and experience. The awards recognize displays that set the precedents for excellence in merchandising and design in a variety of categories. Menasha Packaging Company won a gold OMA award for this 2-sided display for Milwaukee Tools, known among power tool enthusiasts as the “Cadillac of tools.” To show- case the variety of tool combinations, designers ensured the display could support the weight of the tool products and would easily reduce in size as the products sold to maintain a fully stocked presentation in Home Depot stores throughout the U.S. Entries are evaluated on the display’s ability to increase sales, obtain retail placements and work strategically to position the brand at the point of sale. Awards are present- ed to the most innovative and effective in-store and at-re- tail displays. All gold winners are eligible for the “Display of the Year,” which represents the highest recognition the industry can bestow upon an at-retail display.
Menasha took home a gold in the Home and Garden category for its work with Milwaukee Tool on the Milwau- kee Tool Power Tool Pallet Train display. Menasha also won awards for merchandising excellence in the following categories: Food, Hair Care, Skin Care, Snacks, Cosmetics & Fragrances, General Merchandising, Carbonated Drinks, Healthcare, and Chain Drug.
“Innovation is essential in driving a total supply chain approach for our customers,” said Paul Murphy, VP of Re- tail for Menasha Packaging. “We create solutions that grab the attention at point of sale, optimize the supply chain network from concept to in-store or online, and have the agility to change in this evolving retail environment.”

Domino Unveils Video Of X630i Digital Corrugated Press Last month Domino provided a sneak peek of the NEW X630i digital aqueous inkjet press with a 42-second video teaser, as they continue to grow their Digital Printing busi- ness with entrance into the corrugated sector. And now, Domino unveils a 3-minute, full version video providing further details on this innovative and exciting digital corru- gated press. For those in the industry not familiar with the company or the benefits of digital printing, the obvious big questions are why Domino, why digital, and why X630i? Founded in 1978, Domino is a leading manufacturer and distributor of digital printing and product identification solutions. Approaching 1,000 industrial inkjet installations, Domino is a global organization with world headquarters in the UK, and North America headquarters in Gurnee, IL. Domino has 25 subsidiaries, representation in 120 coun- tries, and 2,800 employees worldwide. Heavily invested in digital technology, Domino is strong and stable. Brand owners are increasing the number of versions, varieties, sizes, and flavors of products to gain and main- tain consumer mindshare, as well as adding personaliza- tion to their packaging for greater consumer and brand engagement. They also want to minimize the amount of inventory-on-hand, while having their corrugated packag- ing supplier provide quick turnaround, on demand. BCN(US)202006(出血5mm).pdf 1 2020/6/10 上午 09:40:14
In parallel, converters are seeing an upward trajecto- ry in this shorter run work, which challenges conventional printing methods in the amount of time it takes for set-up, changeovers, and running production. And converters want to ensure they are addressing the needs of their cus- tomers, while running their business successfully and prof- itably. Digital Printing provides that solution. The X630i is a single pass, CMYK water-based digital inkjet press with Domino’s AQ95 ink set which is Swiss Ordinance and Nestle compliant. The ink utilizes a poly- mer-based technology enabling printing on a wide range of uncoated and coated stocks, with no pre-coating re- quired. And because its digital, it continuously prints from one job to the next without the need to stop the press, so converters can change SKUs, images, artwork designs, and personalization with the simple user interface. It translates to less set-up, less make-ready, less downtime, and more uptime. Printing at speeds up to 246 feet per minute (75 meters per minute), the X630i is big on throughput, but small on footprint measuring only 10’ H x 38’ W x 21’ D. And the X630i utilizes an environmentally friendly production pro- cess, allowing converters to do more. From transit packag- ing to display work and everything in-between, the X630i allows for a wide range of print options to be considered across the brand offering, helping converters to increase margins, improve workflow, and grow their sales opportu- nities. Reflecting the food industry’s ever-growing push for more recycling efforts, DS Smith was seen as the ideal partner to provide its Greencoat boxes to support the program. “With sustainability in mind, the USDA wanted to steer away from the use of traditional wax packaging which cannot be recycled and will ulti- mately end up in a landfill,” said David Collins, owner of Collins Brothers Produce. “Greencoat packaging is 100 percent recyclable, is the perfect solution for shipping the food boxes and it’s very effective at keeping moisture out and maintaining strength throughout the supply chain - a tough requirement in the Deep South.” DS Smith’s Greencoat is a coated, water resistant packaging solution that provides the same performance characteristics as wax boxes but is 100 percent recyclable. Today, Greencoat has completely changed the way cold and wet products are packed and shipped and is successfully used in the poultry, produce and seafood industries. DS Smith will have supplied over 750,000 boxes to Collins Brothers Produce for the Farmers-to-Families program at the completion of phase 2 of the program, which began on July 1. One Greencoat box, filled with a mix of apples, oranges, potatoes, onions, cabbage, zucchini, peaches and cucumbers, provides enough fruits and vegetables to feed a family of four for a week. “DS Smith has been able to provide sustainable, recyclable boxes to transport nutritious fruits and vegetables to our friends and neighbors in a time when they need it most,” said Troy Hagenbuch, Specialty Busi- ness Unit General Manager at DS Smith North America. “Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been deemed an essential business, remaining op- erational and supporting our customers and communities, and quickly changing our product mix to package products.
