What’s The BUZZ? NOV 2021

Sharing Gratitude

What I’m Most Thankful For This Year

Of course, none of this would be possible without our tremendous staff at both of our Bockman’s locations and the customers who support and trust us every day. Every year that passes at Bockman’s is just another reminder of how blessed we are to be here every day! A few years ago, our shop was named Napa Autocare Center of the Year, and I still hold that honor close to my heart. I’ve known for a long time that we have a special group of people working for us, but to receive that recognition is validation of that. I’m incredibly grateful to them for their service to this business, our community, and everyone we serve. Plus, this team has become like a close-knit family, and I am proud to see that. We are proud to serve our community this way, and in doing so, you allow us to give back in a big way, too. Within our Napa Autocare Group, we join about six other shops in choosing one local charity to donate $1 from every oil change we do to the charity of our choice. Throughout our 14 years of doing this, we have helped many local organizations and raised more than $80,000 for our community. How amazing is that?! We couldn’t do that without your support and the dedication of our team. This Thanksgiving, I hope you take a few moments to remember the things in your life you have to be grateful for and maybe even share that gratitude with the people you appreciate. Let’s focus on the good of this year.

In a year that has seen grave natural disasters, a resurgence of the pandemic, and continued political divide, it can be easy to forget all the good that also came with 2021. This Thanksgiving, I want to take a few moments to focus on what I’m most grateful for this year in hopes that it will inspire you to do the same. Because no matter how bad the world may seem, we always have a reason to be thankful.

One of the greatest things I’m most appreciative of is the opportunity to travel with my family again. While we may travel to Disney on a regular basis, the ability to visit somewhere new and make new memories is something I won’t forget — especially after our big graduation celebration

cruise was canceled in 2020.

Late this summer, Liz, the boys, and I returned from our adventure in Montana, and it was everything we could have dreamed it would be! Montana is a gorgeous state. We Midwesterners tend to forget just how impressive and big the mountains are until we’re surrounded by them! It was really gorgeous. We spent our week on the dude ranch rafting, fishing, repelling down a cliff, and doing a cattle drive. We stayed busy during the day! But that made the evenings perfect for relaxing; we would end our days watching movies and playing cards in the cabin. It was a perfect way to cap each day. As I’ve mentioned before, every year that Liz and I are able to travel together with our boys is a cherished opportunity, and this vacation will go down in history as one of our best. After a year of being stuck at home, I am incredibly grateful we had this opportunity together.

Happy Thanksgiving!

— Jon Bockman

It’s Not Always t Why Your Car Is Shaking and How Driving a vehicle comes with a lot of responsibility, so it can be equal parts terrifying and annoying when it starts doing something out of the ordinary. One of the most common concerns we hear from distressed clients is that their vehicle is shaking while it’s performing a function that should be totally normal. But don’t panic. A shaking vehicle can usually be fixed! Figuring out when it happens is the key to unlocking and solving the mystery. Braking and Shaking If your vehicle starts to shake when you squeeze the brakes, this could be a sign that it’s time to replace all or parts of your brakes. This kind of shaking is usually prevalent at higher speeds, when the brakes have to work harder to stop the vehicle. Regular brake maintenance and inspections can prevent brakes from wearing down to this point, but if you feel shaking when you’re braking, don’t take this lightly. Get your vehicle to a mechanic as soon as possible! Speedy Shakes Some vibrations and rattling is natural as your vehicle rumbles down the

Can Vitamins Be Customized? Everyone knows it’s important to get their vitamins. But do people need the same amount of certain vitamins, or does it vary? Some researchers say it varies, so vitamin supplement companies, like monthly vitamin subscription service Care/of, customize their pill offers based on your personal health and/or goals. But do these services actually work? Since supplements aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, how do we know whether their packages contain the vitamins and minerals promised? Vitamins may not help as much as you think. Johns Hopkins researchers found that for many illnesses (especially heart- related), taking supplements didn’t make a big difference. One study involving 450,000 people found that multivitamins did not reduce risk for heart disease or cancer. Another study tracking the mental

functioning and multivitamin use of 5,947 men for 12 years found that multivitamins didn’t reduce risk for mental decline such as memory loss or slowed-down thinking, either. The only exception? Young women. Larry Appel, M.D., director of Johns Hopkins Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, says that supplemental folic acid for women of reproductive age may be helpful. “Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in babies when women take it before and during early pregnancy. That’s why multivitamins are recommended for young women.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends women of reproductive age to intake 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, and the amount of iron in a multivitamin may be also beneficial. But can customized vitamins make a difference? If you’re a young woman, or you have a doctor’s orders to get a multivitamin for certain conditions or treatments, the bad news is that right now, hardly any customizable vitamins have a third-party certification for quality and accuracy. If the vitamin or brand doesn’t have ConsumerLab.com, NSF International, or U.S. Pharmacopeia certification, you simply can’t know what you’re getting. So, the best multivitamin is the one designed for your age group with third-party certification. Even if it’s a $10 bottle from Target, it’s likely more effective than what’s trending online.

BON VO Traveling With Kid

The holidays are here, and that calls for some cheer! However, traveling with your kids can be a hassle, especially while trying to remain healthy and safe! Getting out of town should be fun and exciting, so here are some tips to make traveling a little easier and less anxiety-inducing. Unruly kids don’t stand a chance with these tricks!

Departure Matters Aim for late morning or early afternoon when booking flights or deciding what time to hit the road. The last thing you want is the added stress of being late or hitting rush-hour traffic when you’re already worrying about making sure everyone packed the essentials. Also, waking the kids up super early for travel can be difficult, and nobody wants grumpy children. Time Is Your Friend When putting together a vacation itinerary, allow for lots of extra time in between events. The one thing about kids is that you never know when someone will need to use the bathroom, be sick, throw a tantrum, or need your assistance.

the Road

to Fix It

road, but when your wheel is shaking and the car feels unstable as you accelerate — or travels at high speeds — this could be a sign that something is wrong. In particular, your vehicle may need an adjustment. In other scenarios, it could be a tire issue. Regardless, all of these can be simple fixes but should be done immediately to avoid an accident. Shaking at a Stop If the rumbling in your vehicle intensifies while you’re at a stop — or as it’s idling — this could be a sign of a larger engine issue. Firestone reports that the most common cause of this kind of shaking is often due to how your engine is mounted in your vehicle. If it’s loose, it could cause the rattling and shaking you feel, while causing other problems under the hood. This could also be a sign that smaller parts — like spark plugs or belts — need replacing. Once again, a mechanic can help you find and replace the source before too much damage occurs.
