Having Your Say By Simon Joynes, Artistic Director,

Port Stanley Festival Theatre Well, it’s a tough one, isn’t it? What do you do when you have an opinion that seems to run counter to popular opinion? Say this opinion that you have has become very important to you, that it has come to represent in some way a summation of all of the ills of society. Maybe you have sought proof to back up your opinion, to legitimize or to support it, while perhaps not acknowledging that proof can be found on the internet to support almost any opinion. You might be feeling a little “out there”, ostracized, isolated, even victimized, and so you are drawn to “like minded” individuals. These individuals may, or may not, believe exactly the same things as you, in the larger sense, but they agree with you when it comes to the specifics of this particular opinion, and you are encouraged … you are no longer alone. Now, when I was a kid there was a saying, and it went like this, “Beware the company you keep.” Back in the day, it meant don’t hang out in the smoking area or spend too much time leaning against the ledge outside the Chinese restaurant downtown, but in the current circumstance it means don’t be so committed to your opinion that you find yourself standing next to some guy with a megaphone hurling abuse at health care workers and patients alike in front of your local hospital because you think your freedom is being curtailed.

Don’t get me wrong, I defend your right to hold that opinion even if I don’t agree with it; I even defend your right to express it publicly in the form of a protest, but things have stepped over a line when healthcare workers are advised to not wear their scrubs going into work lest they come under fire, and patients need a police escort to receive treatment. I do get it. We’re all tired of this thing. We’re sick of making compromises, of not knowing what tomorrow will bring, and many of us are quick to anger. There is no question that some of the rules, regulations, and protocols have been restrictive and seemingly non-sensical. They have certainly been inconsistent across the region, the province, and the country, but that doesn’t give us license to give rein to our inner thug. So, have your say, it’s your right, but seriously, be careful of the company you keep. After all, when you look in the mirror you want to like the guy you see looking back at you.

Keeping a Canadian Tradition Alive As is so often the case, what was once done out of necessity has now become an artform. Local group, Memories in Wool Rug Hooking Club is keeping this art form alive and having a blast doing it!With its origins in theMaritimes andNewEngland in the late 1800’s, rug hooking has gone from something you did with your old clothes to keep your floor warm – with a rustic image –to an artistic hobby yielding rugs that look like they were created by themasters and should be hung in amuseum. “Memories in Wool Rug Hooking Club was started in 2000,” says Marie Nancarrow, the club’s communications officer. “We wanted to be called The Happy Hookers but apparently someone already had that name,” she reveals with a chuckle, “So someone suggested Memories in Wool, because that’s what the rugs are; they are beautiful memories in wool. To a lot of people who create the rugs, they are very personal.” The Memories in Wool slogan is, It is an art, a craft, a challenge, and a delight! At the core, the group serves two purposes. First, these ladies are proud to keep the tradition of rug hooking alive, and often travel around the county showing their skills and work at various historical shows. Second, the group is very much a social gathering of friends getting together, chatting and sharing laughs as they work. “I’ve been rug hooking with the girls for years,” says Marie. “You make friends with these people and it is a wonderful experience.”

During the warmer weather months, the group gathers every other Tuesday in Pinafore Park bringing lawn chairs, some snacks, and their equipment. In the colder months the group meets at the Elgin County Museum in the training room. “Mike (Baker, the museum Curator) always supports us,” says Marie. “He likes the idea of an old craft being continued. Because that is what we are about.”

The club is always welcoming to new members of any skill level, in- cluding people who have never done it before, but who are excited to learn. For a minimal fee, you can purchase a small starter kit, and Marie or another member of the group will teach you the techniques so you too can become a happy rug hooker in no time.

For more information on the Memories in Wool Rug Hooking Club, or when their next meeting is, call Marie at 519-637-2874.

Volunteer of the Month Sponsored By Royal Oak Senior Living

Volunteers of every kind are needed and important, but one often overlooked group of volunteers who can have such a huge impact on our kids is their coaches. This month, we are highlighting Mike Hawke, a volunteer volleyball coach for the St. Thomas Express Volleyball Club, who has been coaching for almost 30 years. Mike got started in coaching with his son’s baseball team. “When my son was playing baseball, they needed people to help,” says Mike. “That’s just a parent trying to help their kid be the best he can be. Almost every coach that I know started this way.” Mike learned from his fathers’ actions that giving back could have a profound impact on a person’s life. “My father owned Hawke Hardware store and he was a volunteer. I remember my dad helping boys build model airplanes. Years later, I’m selling a windsurfer and this guy shows up and asks if my last name is Hawke, and if I knew Bill Hawke. I said, ‘Yes, he was my father.’ He said, ‘You know, I didn’t have a dad and your dad took the time to help me.’ That was kind of powerful -- when you meet a guy whose life was changed by just another guy taking the time to help.” Eventually Mike’s kids changed from baseball to volleyball, so Mike once again stepped up with his unique style to coach. “As a coach, I’ve come to it from a parenting side. I don’t punish kids, ever; they don’t run, they don’t do burpees, they don’t push ups, they don’t do any of what’s called positive punishment. When I first met my team with the Express, first thing I did was sit down on the gym floor. It’s a power thing, you know; I’m sitting down first; I’m the vulnerable one and everybody has a seat with me. That kind of sets a different tone right there for coaching. I said to my team, ‘I don’t punish,’ and it was like a weight had been lifted off them. I told them, ‘We are going to work as partners in this process. I’m here as a consultant to make you better. If you prefer, I’m a receptacle of information which I will divvy out, if you so choose’”. According to Mike, this made his players buy in to the team concept more and

made them take more ownership, not only of what they do on the court but what the team does as a whole. ToMike, coaching is more then just fundamentals and skills, which he believes are important, but it is about helping the kids get to the finish line by giving them opportunities and knowledge to make the right choices. Sure, there might be course corrections along the way, but if you have their respect those corrections can come with just a quick question: ‘What do you think about what you just did?’ and more often than not, he feels, they will correct themselves. If you love volleyball, sports, or helping mould young athletes, then St. Thomas Express is always looking for volunteers for a variety of roles. “Because you never know what effect your time and effort might have on the next generation,” says Mike, “All you can hope is that your legacy will be that you helped make a better community. Like my dad at the hardware store, helping some kids.”

Lions Club Brings Back Popular Cruise Nights

Can a healthy body and active mind reduce your risk of dementia? By Steve Bond

If you see a parade of beautif l cars cruising into Port Stanley on a Friday evening it is because the Port Stanley Lions Club has brought back their very popular Cruise Nights. Their first event of the season took place Friday, September 10th in their usual haunt, the parking lot of Mackie’s Restaurant. By all accounts, their first night was a roaring success, with approx. 116 cars, and over 700 hundred dollars raised for local charities says Lion, Harry Bishop. The event is free to enjoy; the money is mostly raised by the cruise night participants who pay to register their cars. Harry first brought up the idea of a Cruise Night back in 2008. “I've run cruises before,” says Harry. “So I kind of knew what I was getting into. We had pretty good success with the cruises and the money goes back into charity of course.” The event, which is geared to gear heads near and far, brings lots of people into the core of Port Stanley, so Harry believes that it is not only charities benefiting but also local businesses. Harry loves raising funds to help his community, but as a former mechanic, he also loves the cars that come out each week. “I like to see all the varieties of cars people drive in and not just North American cars; I like to see everything. I love cars!” Friday night Cruise Nights are happening each Friday, from 5pm until dusk until the weather changes, which Harry figures might be in Mid-October. For more information on the Lions Cruise Nights check out their Facebook page

Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Yolanda Mundt, MRT®, CBI, ARDMS, BR A, Manager of Diagnostic Services St Thomas Elgin General Hospital It’s October and once again, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know? One in eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Ontario, yet has one of the highest survival rates of all types of cancer. What you may be surprised to learn is that most women who develop breast cancer do not have a family history of breast cancer. If someone has a first-degree family member who was diagnosed, they may be at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all woman aged 50 or older are encouraged to celebrate themselves by booking a screening mammogram. “I have had the privilege of watching mammography evolve over the last 32 years,” says Yolanda. “Technology continues to improve, and increase our ability to detect breast cancer when it is small. Improvements in equipment over the years have significantly increased sensitivity, and the development of Breast Assessment Programs has improved timeliness, quality and response times.” At STEGH, we offer comprehensive breast assessment services. Our program has evolved over the last five years and we became a certified Breast Assessment Program in 2019. Our team has worked hard to meet the criteria set

health care testing close to home. We have state-of-the-art mammography equipment, accredited under the Canadian Association of Radiologists. This guarantees that we meet the standards for equipment. Our dedicated staff meet the criteria for performing a superior mammogram, and all of our radiologists are expertly trained. After being screened, 90 per cent of women will have a normal mammogram. However, in the event that an abnormality is detected, our office will set up another appointment to investigate the abnormality. Of the women who may be recalled, a high percentage ends up being clear. Others may be followed closely for up to two years before returning to regular screening. Additional testing may include additional mammography pictures, a breast ultrasound, or a specialized test called Contrast Mammography, which utilizes an injection of X-ray contrast to help identify any abnormality that may be suspicious. This test also shows any areas that may be “hidden” among dense breast tissues. If there were concerns about what the abnormality is, our staff would quickly arrange a biopsy. The reason that breast cancer is no longer the leading cause of death in women is because of early detection. Breast screening has been proven to save lives because cancer is identified early and easily treated. Women who are under the age of 50 and experiencing any changes in their breasts, such as a new lump, thickening of the skin, spontaneous clear or bloody discharge, or dimpling, should contact their primary care provider so that a mammogram can be ordered. Screening saves lives! Do it for your children, partner, sisters, brothers, parents, and other family members. They need you.

Dancing for Joy and Health Whether you were born in the age of swing, the sock-hop or disco, music and dancing likely played an important role in your early life. Believe it or not, dancing can still play a beneficial role in your life today! Dancing is a great form of low impact cardio and can be beneficial, regardless of if you are swaying back and fourth to a slow song or doing a jive with one of your friends. The movement not only gets your heart rate up, it improves your strength and balance, and it also helps keeps your joints loose. While you may feel sore and stiff the next day, it is like that with any exercise, so keep at it and sure enough that stiffness will disappear. There have even been studies that show that people who dance regularly are less likely to suffer from forms of dementia. Like playing a game or doing a crossword, dancing makes your brain think a few steps ahead which keeps it active and sharp. Do your feet ever start tapping when you hear a certain song? That is because it is bringing back great memories. Dancing is a fantastic way to help keep your mood and spirits up; it is very hard to be depressed when you’re in a conga line or swinging your partner around the room.

Dancing, whether in a group or with a partner helps build and keep connections alive.Whenwas the last time you and your partner went out dancing together? Taking a dance class or going out once a week is an excellent way to keep each other active while helping keep that flame burning. If you no longer have that special someone to dance with, what a great way to go out and find a new dance partner. So tonight, put on some music, grab your partner, and start a new tradition. You will not only strengthen your brain, bones, muscles, heart, and balance, but you may also strengthen your bond!

The Benefits of Creating Your Own VLOG

I know what you are thinking; first, what is a VLOG, and why on earth do I want to create one? A VLOG is a Video Log; it is often a video conversation between you and your camera (or in many cases the camera on your smart phone). The beauty of your own VLOG is that it can be about anything and everything. Often people create their own VLOG’s so that they can give tips on how to do something like baking, tinkering around the home, doing crafts, or demonstrating how to tie a proper tie knot, for example. How many times have you thought to yourself; boy when my generation is gone, no one is going to know how to (fill in the blank)? Vlogging is a way to keep traditions alive because you can not only tell the watchers how to do it, but you can also tell them why it was done. CreatingyourownVLOGdoesn’t have tobe just about teaching someonehow todo something; it canbeusedas away topass down stories of your family, or your life experiences. While people from younger generations may have read about world events in history books, or seen a movie about them on TV, a VLOG is your opportunity to share your firsthand experience of an event, to bring that event to life for those someone’s who were not around to experience it for themselves. Creating your own VLOG is also about challenging yourself, learning a new skill and being creative. A VLOG can be as simple as taking a video of yourself talking into your phone, and then uploading that video onto a YouTube channel you have created for your VLOG. But as you create

more and more VLOGs, your technique will get better; as you may discover you want to learn how to edit your videos, you can play aroundwith some editing software on your computer. Finally, a VLOG is about community. You are taking the time to share your skills, your thoughts, and your life experiences with the world. But it can also be an opportunity to spend time with a loved one like a grandchild. Perhaps they can be your technical advisor/camera person. This shared time together can help you grow closer because as you chat about your life experiences, they learn more about you and also, you can learn from them as they show you new filters, upload your videos and help you with editing. So, whether you are building a bond with a loved one, sharing a technique or tradition with a new generation, or sharing your perspective on the world and events that have happened in it, a VLOG might just become your favourite new hobby! The sky is the limit. Let your creative juices flow!

Mowing Down the Climate Change Problem by Terry Carroll

Right there, you can see how tough it is for Canadians working two paid jobs – or working one paid job for eight hours a day and another six hours at home raising a family – to pay the report much heed. The reaction tends to be, “It’s a world-wide problem. A solution is decades away. Right now, all I want is some sleep.” Federal election campaigns aren’t always helpful. There’s an understandable tendency for candidates, while avoiding gravel-tossers, to say whatever they believe most of the people want to hear. Instead of getting into the nitty-gritty, politicians tend to speak in broad terms about big problems they say only their party can solve. However, let’s give them and their $200,000+ supporters their due. Some things can only be done by the big guys. In addition, there’s a lot that those of us in the middle or lower end of the scale can accomplish, starting in our own back yards. Apparently, running a gasoline-powered mower for an hour can produce as much air pollution as driving a well- tuned automobile 550 km. Solutions are as close as your local hardware store’s order desk: electric mowers, or, better yet, reel mowers. Best of all: turn your lawns into naturalized or ‘re-wilded’ spaces instead of fence-to-fence grass. The monarch butterflies will love you. As for our country neighbours with your love affair with the riding lawn mower, do you really have to trim so much roadside space? Perhaps it’s time to stop. So, here’s a suggestion for municipal councils: a bylaw that says the municipality, and only the municipality, is allowed to cut grass on the property it owns, meaning, roadsides, ditches, etc. Think how much carbon we could stop emitting into the atmosphere, and how many more butterflies we could support, if these publicly owned spaces were naturalized. Suggestions like these are only the beginning. Bet you didn’t know that the Township of Southwold has a Zero Waste Committee. Just try taking a plastic fork or water bottle to the Keystone Complex in Shedden. You might get a tongue-lashing or feel something like a gravel pellet hit your shoulder.

Here’s one sentence fromthe2021, SixthAssessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: “The report provides new estimates of the chances of crossing the global warming level of 1.5°C in the next decades, and finds that unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to close to 1.5°C or even 2°C will be beyond reach.” “Why rich Canadians are all-in for the Liberals this time,” blared a headline in the National Post nine days before the federal election in September. In part, the story said, “Among Canadians earning more than $200,000 a year, the single issue most likely to drive them to the Liberals was climate change. Earn between $40,000 and $60,000, meanwhile, and the issue virtually drops out of contention.” Having been in the $40,000 to $60,000 bracket for most of my working life, and headed there again when I retire next year, I can understand why lower-income people aren’t as focused on climate change as the Richie Richs of the world. The more time you spend keeping the wolf away from the door, the less bandwidth you have for studying the longer-term habitats of wolves.

BADDA BOOM! by Frances Kennedy

We are participating in an era of disruption but not unprecedented times. What if we remember to remind ourselves it’s not the end of the world? “This too, shall pass.” Einstein also opined, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Badda Bing!

Albert Einstein is said to have said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” Really? In this, the second autumn of a global pandemic, melancholy, like a vigilant virus, has become so commonplace there are few who haven’t felt the smart of

it. Living through increasing, unprecedented (in our lifetime) crises, has reduced our resilience to lethargy and apathy. Lockdowns have challenged our mental health and emotional wellbeing. We are wearied by worry, anxiety, sadness, suspicion, indifference, and despair. It has become increasingly difficult to ignore our capacity for change. Perhaps the gravest injury we do ourselves is to live out our lives believing theworld to be a fixed state, a status quo handed down to us by the vagaries of human history and the authorities of current governance. What if we dare to believe otherwise? What if we choose to think global and act local? What if, even one purposeful action alters our reality in some small, meaningful way? James Baldwin knew this when he issued his impassioned insistence that “nothing is fixed, forever and forever and forever… we made the world we’re living in, and we have to make it over.” Richard Powers knew this when he made his contribution to Take My Advice: Letters to the Next Generation from People Who Know a Thing or Two. One of my favourite chats together with my granddaughters is taking turns asking a question that starts with “What If?” It’s interesting how hopefulness and fear collide and subside depending on the mood of previous questions. What if asking “what if” is an act of courage? Here’s what I’m beginning to believe: Common sense is becoming uncommon; curiosity fosters a resilient mindset and attitude that helps us choose optimism. Hope and belief are an intentional act of immense vulnerability; cynicism cowers at the prospect. Hateful rhetoric is the first language of fear and cynicism and threatens further despair. The courage to defy cynicism and accept any world view as fact is compromised in the era of “fake news.” Our progeny and theirs need to be assured that history repeating itself provides context for our current reality. This is our calling, our purpose, our part of the unfinished story of human history. I am reminded by a dear gal pal and eternal optimist whose family lived life through theatre, the power of song. Sometimes singing out loud (or like Pooh Bear, humming in your head) is all that’s required to re-boot belief. She’s been known to sing the lyrical lines of Chet Baker at dawn’s early light along the lakeshore: “Look for the silver lining whenever a cloud appears in the blue. Remember, somewhere the sun is shining and so the right thing to do is let it shine for you. A heart full of joy and gladness will always banish sadness and strife, So always look for the silver lining and try to find the sunny side of life.”
