‘Lucky’ to Be in Your Corner WHY I DON’T BELIEVE IN LUCK

As the father of a 16-year-old daughter, I’m constantly preaching the value of making good decisions and living with your consequences. Like any parent, I want my daughter to have a good framework for evaluating risks and uncertainties so she can take the path best suited for her. I know she’ll make mistakes, but I hope through my actions and words, she’s heeding my advice. In May, there will be one day in which everyone will be wary of their decisions, wondering if “bad luck” will strike. May 13 is actually the first Friday the 13th of the year, and I know there are superstitious people out there who will be on high alert.

not sit well with the very people I serve every day as a personal injury attorney. You can’t control if you are injured because of someone else’s negligence. So, by its very definition, isn’t an injury after an accident bad luck? I suppose in some way it is, but this situation has the opportunity to get very bad very quickly. After something difficult happens, you have a choice: You can ignore it and hope it goes away, or try to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. It’s understandable why people do this. After an injury, you are placed in a difficult financial, emotional, and physical situation. It can feel like the world is against you. But you do have a choice. Instead, you can seek professional guidance and support to help you heal properly and gain the foundation you need to build into this next chapter. In a way, you can create your own luck after something bad happens to you. You control your response to it. When you hire an attorney to help you manage your personal injury claim, you are putting in the work to change your “luck.” My goal is to provide my clients with some “good luck” by being the person they turn to when they need to put up a fight for the compensation they deserve after an accident. If you’re someone who subscribes to the belief that good and bad luck do exist, then more power to you. I believe we all have a right to follow whatever tenants are most useful to us. For me, it’s that we create luck. For others, it may be that superstitions on Friday the 13th protect us. Whatever it is, we can all agree that regardless of the circumstance, it helps to have someone in your corner. That’s who I hope to be for you. -David Brauns

I am not one of them.

I personally don’t subscribe to the idea of luck — good or bad. I believe our “luck” is the product of our own choices, and it has very little to do with fate or the universe. If you look at successful people, like Oprah, Serena Williams, and Tom Brady, success isn’t just something that happened to them. Oprah was fired and climbed her way to the top of television talk show success. Tom Brady wasn’t given a chance after being drafted, and he’s proven himself as a winner time and time again. Serena and her sister, Venus, trained relentlessly to get to where they are today. The point is that anyone who believes in luck could point to these stories and find good luck, but when you review their history, it’s littered with hard work. I truly believe this is how we build our own good fortune. I’ve often heard from colleagues who win particularly difficult cases that their judge was “in a good mood” that day. This quip isn’t typically accurate. You don’t win a case based on the attitude of a judge. You win a case when you put in the effort and work to make it a strong case. When you don’t, that’s when you fail.

Now, I’ve always believed that “luck” has nothing to do with our successes and failures, but lately, I’ve come to realize this may

WITH THESE 3 HACKS Make Your Kitchen Cleaner Than Ever Before

No Need for Auto Clean

You cook your meals, make your coffee, wash the dishes, and do so many other activities in your kitchen. It’s no surprise that our kitchens are often the most trafficked rooms in our homes. Our kitchens are also commonly the messiest rooms in the house since they’re used to cook meals.

How do you normally clean your oven? Do you press the auto-clean button and let it run? While this works, it

will often leave your house with a displeasing smell and can even set off your fire alarms. You can make a mixture of 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 1/2 cup baking soda. Spray the inside of your oven with the mixture,

Trying to keep your kitchen clean on a daily basis can be maddening. Every time you make a meal, there’s another mess to clean up. It seems like there’s no end to the kitchen cleaning process. Thankfully, there are a few hacks you can try that will lengthen your time between cleanings and ideally help your kitchen sparkle.

but avoid the heating elements. After 8–12 hours, clean the oven with soapy water and dry it using a cloth. Your oven will be cleaner than you might’ve even imagined.

Garbage Disposal Cleaning

Quick Cabinet Cleaning

If your home has a garbage disposal, there’s a good chance that it’s one of the dirtiest appliances in your kitchen. It’s also one of the hardest things to clean since it’s located in your sink.

Your cabinets and pantry can get gross quickly and attract bugs if the items inside of them are open or spilled. If you try to clean your cabinets with a rag, you’ll end up missing some of the crumbs and dirt. Instead, use your vacuum cleaner to capture any debris and ensure they are spotless. It’s a quick and easy method to keep your cabinets clean.

But there is an easy trick to keep it fresh. Fill an ice cube tray with water and lemon wedges, then stick it in the freezer. Once it’s frozen, crack the ice cubes free, and send them down the drain with the garbage disposal turned on. The lemons will improve the smell while the ice removes any excess grime and cleans the blades.

I need your help. I took a long break from social media, and Facebook deleted my personal account. I didn’t realize that it would orphan our firm’s Facebook page. So, I had to create a brand new Facebook page for our firm. We are back to ground zero. I would really appreciate it if you could like our new page and let us back into your feed. I promise we won’t bombard you with dry legal stuff and keep it fun. You can use this QR code (to the right) to help us out! P.S. On the bright side, my new FB feed is nothing but friends and no spam or advertising because the algorithm doesn’t know what to do with me yet.

LET’S RIDE — SAFELY Reminders for Motorcyclists and Drivers This Summer

To start, if it’s been a few months since your last ride, check your bike. Look for signs of degrading mechanical features, deflated tires, and lights that are burned out. Take a small trip around the block to get a feel for your motorcycle again. And don’t forget to “re-up” your insurance! When some riders take a break from their bike, they often cancel their insurance policies. Forgetting to activate it again could leave you in a lurch after an accident. Once you’re ready to ride, don’t forget the proper gear. You need a secure, hard helmet. It should feel snug, and it should not “wiggle” on your head. Wear bright colors, and always cover your limbs. This will protect your skin in an accident. For theMotorist Motorcyclists have a right to use the roadways like any other vehicle operator, and it’s

imperative that motorists be vigilant as well. Because of the vehicle’s size, motorcycles can easily slip into blind spots. Check your blind spot before changing lanes to prevent any accidents. Be mindful when following a motorcyclist, too! These vehicles can stop more abruptly than most cars, so if you’re following too close behind them, you could rear-end a rider. And be extra cautious at night. Again, because these vehicles are smaller, it can be difficult for other motorists to see motorcycles. When in doubt of what you see, use extra caution and slow down. This is extremely important at intersections, which can be dangerous for all drivers. If an accident between a car and a motorcycle leaves you injured, our team at Brauns Law can help you get the compensation you deserve. Call the number at the bottom of this newsletter for a consultation. Stay safe, and enjoy the ride!

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month — and for good reason. While we may enjoy warm weather all year in Georgia, the world to the north of us is just thawing out. That means more motorcyclists are hitting the road and taking cross-country adventures. But before you take off on your bike or cruise past riders in your car, heed these safety warnings. For theMotorcyclist Few experiences can compare to the freedom of riding down the open road, but perhaps what takes the cake is the feeling of knowing you are doing so safely.

IT’S TIME TO READ OR REREAD THIS CLASSIC A TIMELESS AND INFLUENTIAL BOOK

“How to Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie has stood the test of time. Published in 1936, this book has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Relating to the key relationships of humans, the book embodies self-improvement, communication, relationship building, and compassion. Every working professional or individual rubbing elbows in their social group needs it in their toolbox! If you haven’t already experienced the influential and game-changing words of Dale Carnegie, it’s time to pick up a copy. If you’ve already read it, it’s time to give it another read to review and remember because there is still much value to unfold. Embedded within each page of this easy- to-read book are recommendations for creating, building upon, and improving

successful and positive relationships within your life, whether it be with friends, family members, coworkers, network professionals, or supervisors. Written and published more than 85 years ago, its life lessons and thought-provoking suggestions still apply today because, while technology, education, and infrastructure have all advanced, our basic human tendencies and the way we interact remain the same. “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you,” Dale Carnegie states. In “How to Win Friends & Influence People,” he explores the importance of putting the needs, interests, and values of others before your own and how to handle situations for the best possible outcome. It takes a deep dive into

getting to know yourself before learning how to bond with others on a personal and/or professional level. This book, a brilliant study on human nature, will have you wondering why you didn’t read it sooner while reflecting on situations and interactions you could have handled differently. But most importantly, Carnegie’s pointers are sure to provide amazing insights while you learn to get along with just about anyone.
