‘Anybody Want a Peanut?’

Dr. Stuckey’s Go-To Comedies

A s we make our way into spring, we also mark one year of living with COVID-19 and all the restrictions and changes it’s brought to our daily lives. I don’t think any of us have been able to completely avoid the challenges of the pandemic, but there’s been one constant that’s helped me through this and other difficult times in my life: humor. Any time is a great time for a laugh, but if you haven’t watched your favorite feel-good movie or TV show in a while, April is an especially good time to do so because it’s National Humor Month. While plenty of great new TV shows and movies are released each month, I find that many of my go-to comedies are older classics. That’s right in line with a trend discovered by a TV rating company, Nielsen, last year. They found that over half of respondents were seeking comfort in familiar TV shows, with 54% of respondents re-watching an old favorite. That’s something I can relate to! One family favorite is “The Princess Bride.” This film has a bit of a fairy-tale feel, but it’s also a great adventure story with many funny, quotable lines. It has always had a special place in the Stuckey household, and even my grown children still quote it regularly when they’re home. We especially love when Vizzini, played by Wallace Shawn, says “No more rhymes now. I mean it.” And Fezzik, played by André the Giant, responds, “Anybody want a peanut?” I know that “The Princess Bride” is already a favorite for many

families, but if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, it’s definitely worth a watch soon!

It’s hard to talk about comedies without mentioning the great Steve Martin. He’s been in so many great movies over the years, but one of my favorites is the slapstick comedy “The Jerk” from 1979. This was actually Martin’s breakout movie role! He stars alongside Bernadette Peters and comedian Jackie Mason. I’m not alone in my love for this movie — it’s been featured on many “best of” and top comedy lists over the years. If you’re a fan of the film, then you’ll understand when I say, “That’s all I need.” I’ve been watching “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell lately a lot too. Maybe that’s because we just celebrated Groundhog Day on Feb. 2 or because for some people, this last year has felt a lot like the film! Either way, I enjoy this classic comedy where grumpy weatherman Phil, played by Murray, gets stuck in a time loop. Though there are deeper lessons in the film — he only breaks free from the loop when he learns to act more selflessly — it’s also hilarious and something I re-watch regularly. Another funny movie with some good life lessons is “Bruce Almighty,” which stars Jim Carrey, who’s had a long and storied comedy career, as Bruce Nolan. Not unlike Murray’s character in “Groundhog Day,” Nolan is a newscaster who’s down and out. He gets the chance to literally play God, taking over the job for a week from God himself, played by Morgan Freeman. Through a series of mishaps, he learns that being God isn’t as easy as he thought!

In the movie realm, I can also highly recommend “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “The Three Amigos,” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” All three are sure to get you laughing. For our staff Christmas party this year, we rented out a theater and watched “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” together. It was a great time. If you’re looking for something a little shorter, “Seinfeld, “Friends,” and “Two and a Half Men” are some of my favorite TV shows to watch. I like that you can put on any random episode and enjoy it. Humor is a relatively easy way for us to take care of ourselves. When times get tough, it’s important to take some time to relax, do things we enjoy, and find a reason to laugh. I know I wouldn’t have been able to get through the last year as well without this.

Happy Humor Month!

Improve Patience and Reduce Stress

With These 4 Tips

Switch Focus When agitated, it’s common for our thoughts to center on the irritant. Though it may feel difficult to do when you’re stressed out, switching your focus will help you calm down and be more patient. For instance, if you find yourself growing more and more frustrated by hitting red lights as you drive, try focusing on green instead. Looking for passing cars, signs, trees, or anything that is green will help break that hyper-focus and shift it from negative to positive. Soon, those red lights will be less bothersome. Meditate A great way to increase your patience is by meditating, a combination of the first two tips — focus and breathing. Meditation helps people constructively manage thoughts by allowing them to practice observing their thoughts from a neutral perspective. Regular meditation can reduce stress and improve patience throughout

In this fast-paced world, it can be easy to grow impatient. Things as small as waiting for a slow website to load or waiting in a long line for coffee can sometimes leave people feeling frustrated and anxious. Practicing patience helps reduce stress and helps you realize it’s okay if something takes a few extra minutes. If you find yourself feeling impatient, here are a few helpful tips. Breathe Deeply When you feel stressed, your breathing gets shallow, which amplifies anxiety. Practicing deep breathing can help reduce stress and frustration by relaxing your body and mind. This is as simple as taking a few quiet moments to inhale through the nose, drawing your breath into the belly and lungs. Count to four to help you focus as you inhale. Then exhale slowly through your mouth. After a few repetitions, you will find that your mind and body feel calmer.

the day. Even just 5–10 minutes of daily practice can have a tremendous impact over time.

Practice Acceptance While the above tips can help you improve your patience, sometimes you must simply accept that some things can’t be rushed. There will be times when we cannot control the outcome: A red light will change to green when it changes and no sooner. Learning to accept that can help people let go of their frustration, become more understanding of their situation, and greatly improve their patience.

Snooze Your Way to Success Like Tom Brady And How Dr. Stuckey Can Help

We’ve touched on the importance of a good night’s sleep many times before. Just like oral health is linked to overall physical health, great sleep is linked to better mental and physical health outcomes, including lower levels of stress and anxiety, improved immune response, and quicker recovery from injury.

ring to his collection after helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7. Of course, that’s a record number of wins for a quarterback, but it’s not Brady’s only Super Bowl record. He has the most MVPs to his name (five) and holds records for passing yards, pass attempts, touchdown passes, and completions. Not bad for the 43-year-old who, in 2000, wasn’t picked up until the sixth round of the draft.

A lot of health experts have speculated about what makes Brady stand out from the pack. Some say it’s his diet or his daily workout routine, but Brady himself credits his success to snoozing.

But you don’t have to take our word for it! Take it from Tom Brady, who just added a seventh

“I firmly believe that sleep and recovery are critical aspects of an effective and holistic training program. Proper sleep has helped me get to where I am today as an athlete, and it is something I continue to rely on every day,” Brady has said. He’s so invested in good sleep that he even helped develop a line of sleepwear for the athletic brand Under Armour. If you want to experience the benefits of sleep, but your nightly rest is currently disturbed by snoring or sleep apnea symptoms, there’s hope. Take the first step toward getting a better night’s rest by contacting us to learn more about our dental sleep services, including a free sleep screening. An Easy Way to Drink More Water

And Avoid Dehydration

Dehydration is a big problem. Many people don’t drink enough water each day — some reports show that 75% of adults in the United States don’t drink enough

mild dehydration can cause health problems and impact your brain, heart, skin, and other organs, which can lead to headaches, confusion, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress.

That might seem like a lot of liquid, but you can easily drink it without trying too hard. All you have to do is be proactive: Start keeping water any place you frequent during the day. Keep a bottle in your car, at your desk, by your favorite chair, near your workout equipment, etc. Having water easily available in the places you spend the most time each day helps increase your chances of actually drinking it. An alternative approach is to purchase a giant jug that can hold all the water you need to drink in a day. Seeing it all in one place might be intimidating at first, but this method makes things very simple. Keep the jug close, and your water intake will likely increase without too much additional effort. And if you’re just not motivated to drink plain water, you can always add sugar-free flavoring or lemon to make it more enticing.

water, and over a quarter are dehydrated. Though those statistics aren’t widely agreed upon, it’s obvious that most people need more fluids.

We all know the solution to dehydration is to drink more water, but exactly how much water do we need each day? The amount will differ

depending on the person, but one simple way to approximate your necessary daily intake is by dividing your body weight in half and drinking that much water (in fluid ounces) each day. For example, if you weigh 175 pounds, you’d need to drink 87.5 fluid ounces — over half a gallon — of water per day.

Even if it feels like you’re drinking a lot of water,

remember that water leaves your body every time you sweat, go to the bathroom, and even breathe. Not keeping up with proper water intake can lead to dehydration. Even

Neil Young, a Longtime Favorite

I’ve been a fan of Neil Young since the ‘70s, when his unique style and voice first began playing on the airwaves. When I was in college, I’d put his album on and my roommate would always announce that “Neil ‘I Gargle With Glass’ Young” was playing. His raspy, rough voice is what earned him that memorable nickname from my roommate. I appreciate Neil Young’s versatility as an artist. He’s collaborated with many musicians over the years and produced music in categories as diverse as folk, rock, grunge, and country. In fact, he’s still writing great music today. I started thinking about featuring Neil Young in this edition because my wife, Melody, recently gave me a special edition Rolling Stone magazine devoted totally to his music and career. If you didn’t already know Neil Young was a prolific musician, you would after seeing that Rolling Stone devoted almost 100 pages to him and included a list of his top 100 songs . It goes to show just how much music he’s made over the past almost seven decades.

He and Stephen Stills collaborated to produce a little-known record in 1976 called “Long May You Run.” The title track is one of my favorite Neil Young songs. Though I have to admit, until recently, I thought the song was about an old girlfriend. Turns out, it’s actually about an old car of his! I guess the line “with your chrome heart shining in the sun / long may you run” makes more sense now. Anyhow, I recommend checking out that album (by the Stills- Young Band) if you missed it. I also like the song “Like a Hurricane” from his 1977 album “Decade.” This is a great album to check out if you’re new to his music because it includes a lot of his most popular songs. You also can’t go wrong listening to “Heart of Gold,” one of his most famous albums. “Powderfinger,” which Rolling Stone ranked as his top song of all time, is also a favorite of mine. He performed it with Crazy Horse, and it was on the 1979 album “Rust Never Sleeps.”
