Message from Steve Holgate

Thank you for your interest in the role of Building Surveyor in Estates and Campus Services at the University of Leicester.

There has never been a better time to join the University, or to work in our city. Since taking up our positions over the last 18 months, the University has embarked upon a challenging and very exciting Campus Masterplan aligned to delivering the Physical Environment Strategy over the next 5-10 years. The first phase of works include a new Business School on the Brookfield Campus, an extension to the Percy Gee student hub including new central paved Square, together with a new Teaching & Learning building, amounting to in excess of £65m investment to enable first phase moves to be completed in 2019. The second phase and major part of the Capital Programme will then follow from 2020 with a total investment exceeding £500m, with several major projects on main campus together with major public realm and infrastructure works. Other works include a privately financed residential and multi decked car parking scheme providing circa 1,250 beds, a new residences Masterplan and a new and exciting project to develop Space Park Leicester which will be recognised internationally and will build on Leicester’s reputation for space science. With responsibility for leading a range of complex refurbishment projects typically up to £1m in value, the Building Surveyor will act in the capacity of Designer, Lead Consultant and Project Manager for minor works and capital schemes, leading and motivating combined teams of internal staff and external consultants to provide completed schemes to the required brief, programme and budgetary constraints agreed. Successful candidates will have gained demonstrable experience of managing complex refurbishment and strategic maintenance schemes in the £50k to £1m value range. You will have strong technical and commercial skills, with experience of contract administration and design. It is essential that candidates have excellent interpersonal and communication skills together with the adaptability to manage a number of projects simultaneously. It is anticipated that candidates will possess a relevant professional qualification in an area such as building surveying, construction or project management.

THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING The College comprises of seven departments undertaking diverse programmes of study, from human geography to laboratory-based subjects, to engineering. Students benefit from working alongside leaders in their fields, making the College an exciting environment for both staff and students.

OUR STRUCTURE With around 4,000 staff and more than 20,000 students representing 115 nationalities, our efforts in discovery benefit from the rich diversity and talent of our University community. Our staff work across three colleges and professional service areas, this enables us to work across disciplines, bringing innovative, collaborative approaches to our research and teaching. PROFESSIONAL SERVICES The University’s Professional Services are led by the Registrar and Chief Operating Officer, and have staff located within academic departments, Colleges and Corporate Services. Professional service staff work in partnership with academics to support the University and help it grow its influence locally, nationally and globally. THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND PSYCHOLOGY Based in some of the newest purpose-built and modern facilities in the UK, the College offers a wide range of courses and education in the areas of laboratory, clinical, and health through the provision of innovative education and globally recognised research.

The University’s estate is hugely influential in the decision making process of students when choosing to study here, therefore we are proud to provide a high quality environment for work, study and life, and are committed to delivering continuous improvements to ensure our estate is the best it can be. The University’s estate extends to a total site area of 95 hectares, comprising a non-residential estate of 110 buildings (totalling around 200,000m 2 ) and a residential estate of over 1 00 separate buildings with a floor area of around 100,000m2, providing 4,223 student places. The insurance replacement value of the entire campus is £877 million. The majority of the academic facilities are situated to the south of Leicester city centre comprising a dedicated campus supplemented by a number of individual properties to the north and south, all located within a 1 mile radius. Additional facilities are concentrated at our partner hospital sites, and to the south east of the campus in Oadby and Knighton. ESTATE FACTS AND FIGURES

OUR ESTATE

Our compact campus features architecture that ranges from the Victorian grandeur of the Fielding Johnson Building to the state-of-the-art David Wilson Library, all presided over by the three towers which form the University’s distinctive silhouette, including the 18-storey Attenborough Tower which houses one of the very few remaining paternosters in the UK. Our world-famous Engineering Building was the first major building designed by British architects Sir James Stirling and James Gowan. Completed in 1963, the Grade II listed building comprises workshops and laboratories at ground level and a tower containing offices and lecture theatres. We are currently undertaking works to replace the roof and glazed facades of the building to secure its use for the 21 st century. We’re committed to sustainability in everything that we do and to delivering a continual reduction in our carbon footprint. All new developments are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, as evidenced in our most recent development, the £42 million George Davies Centre. Completed in 2016, the building is the UK’s biggest Passivhaus building and represents the largest investment in medical education by any UK university in the last decade. Our ongoing redevelopment of the Fielding Johnson square – transforming the space from a car park, into a vibrant open space at the heart of our campus – further demonstrates our commitment to continually developing our campus to support the needs of our staff and students. We are the first university in the country to launch a partnership with our Students’ Union for on-campus catering and retail facilities, demonstrating our recognition of the importance of campus services contributing to staff and student experience. Since 2010, the University estate has won over 100 construction awards which include the BREEAM worldwide sustainability standard Certificate of Excellence for the George Davies Centre.

THE FUTURE

The newly formed Division of Estates and Campus Services is the largest division in Professional Services at the University, employing around 6 0 0 staff. The Division comprises:

Driven by a desire to provide the highest quality facilities, excellent customer service to students, staff and visitors and a financial return for the University, this is a fantastic time to join the Division. We are embarking on an ambitious programme of investment. The £500 million plus Capital Programme will coordinate physical and financial planning with institutional and academic strategy. The Programme revolves around large–scale redevelopment of on- campus facilities. This is alongside the development of a National Space Park at Abbey Fields and an overseas campus in China.
