Taming the Santiam REMEMBERING MY FRIEND JOSH AND OUR RAFTING JOURNEY

Brian R. Summers DMD, PhD Patrick V. Hagerty, DMD

L ike many kids who grew up in the Willamette Valley, I have quite a few rafting stories (and scars) from the summers I spent taming the rapids. When I was 10 years old, my mom, stepdad, and I, along with my friend Josh, loaded up for a day of rafting down the Santiam River. Josh and I shared a raft, and I have great memories of us flipping over into the cool water, navigating through the rough waters, and watching the salmon run up the river. It was a near-perfect day spent on the river. Near the end of our trip, I decided to look over the front edge of the boat. Within seconds, I flipped over the front of our raft, and the boat glided over me. My 10-year- old body struggled to push the boat off of me as I swung my legs wildly in a panicked search for the river bottom. I held my breath and struggled to free myself for what felt like minutes, but thankfully, I had a smart co-captain. Josh was able to push and maneuver the raft away from me, and just a few seconds after tumbling out of our boat, I was back aboard, soaking wet and laughing with my best childhood friend. Within the next 100 feet, we were docked on land, relaying the story to my parents. Looking back, I was lucky enough to be wearing a life jacket when I went overboard, and if anything, that venture off the front of the boat has taught me the importance of water safety. I always hated wearing one as a kid, but I learned a valuable lesson that day. However, now as a parent, I can’t help but be bewildered that two 10-year-olds were trusted to be the co-captains of their own vessels, conquering the wild rapids of the Santiam. Times certainly have changed, and sometimes it’s a wonder my generation survived our childhood! But the part of this trip that sticks out to me the most is the memories I made with Josh. My summers were frequently spent

at his house while his sister babysat us, and I often think of his family as my second family. It was a comfort to spend my days at Josh’s house just playing, laughing, and getting into the ridiculous antics all kids get into when they’re growing up, especially when my parents were going through their divorce. happened. Josh died when he was just 20 years old, and his passing was a tragic event for his family and our friends. I will always value the time I spent with Josh, laughing, growing, and playing. I still remained close to Josh’s family; his brother even married my wife and I! As rafting season picks up here in Oregon, I’m often reminded of that day with Josh, battling the Santiam River. It’ll always be a special day in my heart, but I am forever grateful for all the memories I have of growing up with a friend like Josh. -Dr. Brian Summers “I WILL ALWAYS VALUE THE TIME I SPENT WITH JOSH, LAUGHING, GROWING, AND PLAYING.” For me, these memories are even more special today, given what has since

HONORING OUR COORDINATOR TERRA FITZWATER Celebrating 16 Years!

THE TRUTH ABOUT MEDITATION An Ancient Solution to Modern Problems

Terra Fitzwater always thought she was destined to work in the medical field. Working in an office had never appealed to her, but as a junior in high school in 2003, Terra began doing office work at Dr. Patrick Hagerty’s dental practice, which would later become Calapooia Family Dental. Terra would spend many afternoons after school filing charts and completing other miscellaneous tasks around the office.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

This is the first step in every meditation session. Though often associated with the New Age metaphysical movement, meditation isn’t all about incense and healing crystals. Meditation is an ancient practice that strengthens your mental focus, and recent research suggests that it offers real solutions to modern problems. What is Meditation? Meditation has strong roots in various religious and cultural traditions, but anyone can find value in practicing it. The purpose of meditation is to strengthen your mind by promoting mindfulness, focus, and awareness. Does Meditation Work? It depends on what you mean by “work.” Will meditation allow you to defy gravity and hover above the earth? Probably not. But there are so many benefits that will leave you feeling lighter in another way. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindful meditation lowers stress levels, and patients who habitually meditate report less chronic pain. Another study published in the same journal found that regular meditation also fights depression. How Do I Meditate? Meditating is as simple as sitting in a quiet place, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes. Whenever your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath. You don’t need to climb a mountain or pay for a week-long retreat to start meditating. That said, there are plenty of resources that help beginners build a strong foundation for meditation. Popular apps like Calm or Headspace are available on any smartphone and offer guided courses you can start anywhere, anytime. You could also check online or at your local community center for group classes if you would like some in-person guidance. Meditation isn’t a magical ritual that will cure all that ails you, but plenty of research suggests meditation does provide tangible benefits to our mental and physical well-being. Maybe one day, meditation will be as commonplace as daily exercise.

In 2006, Terra obtained her associate’s degree from Linn-Benton Community College and became a certified medical assistant. But rather than jumping into a medical career, Terra felt she had already found her place at Dr. Hagerty’s practice and decided to join his team full time. “I enjoyed what I was doing and my coworkers,” Terra says. “We all get along. It makes coming to work easier … I don’t dread coming to work.” By 2010, Terra had married her husband, Jim, and within a few years, the couple was adjusting to their life as new parents. She dropped her time at the office down to part-time, but most recently, she has been our office manager three days each week. Most patients will recognize Terra since she has spent 16 years with our clinic. Getting to know the patients and seeing them grow is one of the best parts of her job, Terra says. “I feel like our patients aren’t just like a number, and I think we really do care about the patients that come through the door,” Terra says. Outside of Calapooia Family Dental, Terra and her family can be found spending their days camping or floating along the Metolius River. When they can, the family likes to climb the Black Butte Trail, and they even climbed the upper half of it last summer! Her sons, Liam and Jase, are in the middle of their busy baseball season, so many of the family’s spring and summer afternoons are spent at the ball diamond. Born in Corvallis, Terra has called Albany home nearly all her life. Despite her original intentions, Terra says she has found her home at Calapooia Family Dental. We are thrilled that her place is with Calapooia Family Dental, serving our patients. Thank you for your dedication, Terra!

When you have missing teeth, your entire body is compromised. The jawbone that once secured a tooth begins to wither away, which can change your facial structure. Missing a tooth can also cause shifting of neighboring teeth, and eventually, lead to changes in your bite. Furthermore, your digestion — which begins in the mouth — becomes more difficult, and when you can’t chew properly, your body doesn’t digest nutrients efficiently. For those that are missing teeth, every day can be a constant battle with eating, smiling, and self-confidence. But thanks to dental implants and advanced dental technology, these patients no longer have to hide their smiles. Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and act like your normal teeth. These tooth replacements are surgically placed and mimic real, healthy teeth. In addition, dental implants can range from a single tooth to whole-mouth restorations. On the surface, this procedure can seem painful, but most patients actually report less pain during the procedure than they did when their tooth actually came out! Learn more about two implant options available to all Calapooia Family Dental patients below. Standard Implants Restoration with a single implant begins with placement of a strong titanium post to replace the missing tooth root. HOW DENTAL IMPLANTS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

This foundation needs about 3–6 months to fuse with the bone. After healing, a tooth-colored crown is simply attached to the implant. Immediately following the procedure, patients can brush, floss, eat, and attend regular cleanings without fear or worries.

All-On-4 Fixed Implant Bridge Similar to single implants, bridges often involve filling the spaces left by missing teeth by actually “bridging the gap” between two teeth and the space that separates them. The All-On-4 fixed implant bridge offers an innovative solution to replace many missing teeth and improve the oral health, confidence, and aesthetics of its users. This process often involves placing four to six implants at once, and most patients receive a temporary bridge attached to these implants the same day! Don’t let your self-confidence and overall health suffer. Dr. Summers and Dr. Hagerty have over 30 years of experience with advanced dental implant procedures and can perform these treatments in our dental clinic to give you the smile you deserve. Learn more about these options by visiting CalapooiaFamilyDental.com , or call 541- 926-3689 to schedule a consultation.

HOLD ON TIGHT! Prepare for Family Fun at an Amusement Park This Summer

On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in the nation opened to eager and brave participants at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In the years since the first riders climbed aboard the Switchback Railway 135 years ago, roller coasters and the amusement parks that house them have changed dramatically. But the thrill that attracted all those first participants still remains. Celebrate the nation’s love of heart-stopping adventure by visiting an amusement park this summer. Follow these tips to make the most out of your trip. I’M LOST! Before you head out, review park maps and ride descriptions. Create a list of the attractions everyone in your group wants to see and plan out your route ahead of time. While some spontaneity can be fun — it’s a vacation, after all — the sheer size of many parks coupled with high anticipation can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared. Planning ahead will save you a few headaches and disappointed family members. PACK THE ESSENTIALS Find an over-the-shoulder bag or strap on a fanny pack to carry your cash, keys, snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses. You’re spending the whole day outside, so make sure you’re considering the weather when you head out and always slather on a generous amount of sunscreen.

Lastly, wear comfortable walking shoes to prevent blisters and aching heels. You’ll have more fun if you know you’ll be prepared for anything. WATER COSTS HOW MUCH !? Amusement parks are expensive, and when you spend a whole day seeking thrills, you’re eventually going to need sustenance. Check the park’s rules before you leave, but most will allow your family to bring in a few snacks, like fruits or granola bars, and a reusable, empty water bottle. Many parks will have a drinking fountain near the entrance where you can

fill up before exploring. If you plan to eat or drink at one of the establishments in the park, peruse the food options on the park’s website ahead of time to get an idea of what is available and how much money you should bring. Adventure awaits this summer! Don’t let a lack of preparedness keep you from enjoying a 135-year-old tradition.
