Financial Literacy Is a Crucial Part of Your Journey AN IMPORTANT LIFE BASIC
job loss, car accidents, or anything that may set you back. Being prepared via securing insurance and/or emergency funds is essential. One mistake I see many people make, especially in this environment, is being too aggressive in their portfolios. Let me explain. Often, an individual may start out with a 60/40 split between stocks and bonds. Over time, the stocks do well while the bonds don’t move very much. They go from a 60/40 split to a 70/30 split, then eventually to a 90/10 split. Once it gets to this point, right about then is when the market goes into a downturn. And, if the market goes down at 50%, 90% of your portfolio loses 50%, and that’s where the problem lies. It’s all a matter of being able to rebalance your portfolio on an annual basis so that you’re never taking too much risk based on who you are as an investor and where you are, not only in a market cycle, but also a life cycle. In being financially literate, the most important thing is to understand where you are at all times by having some type of plan in place so you can check in regularly with yourself. That’s why we have a plan for everyone when they first become a client. Via yearly reviews, we get our clients on track and help them stay on track every year.
into your retirement and savings accounts first before spending on extracurricular items and activities. Then, consistency is key. I recall working with a number of military clients who already had the right mindset. A group called USPA/IRA would teach military folks at a young age to always put money away into an account. Working with these clients was always such a pleasure because they were incredible savers and even passed this onto their children. The interesting thing is that even when they went into retirement, they had grown so accustomed to putting money away into investments that they didn’t even think about taking money out. This discipline allowed them to accumulate the great nest eggs that they had. Another great point to mention is with respect to expenses, three of the largest expenses we have are mortgages (if you have one), health care, and taxes. The rule is that the more you can do to lower those expenses, the better off you will be. When it comes to financial and income planning, having a written plan in place that sets up a baseline allows you to check in year after year to be sure you are on the right path in your financial journey. Your focus along your financial journey should not only be on accumulation but also protection. It’s important to protect against negative circumstances such as death, illness,
April is Financial Literacy Month, a month dedicated to celebrating the opportunity to review your finances and gradually improve them as well as ensuring that your children and grandchildren understand the basic fundamentals. When it comes to being financially literate, the important thing is to know your numbers and to review them often. In schools today, they don’t do a very good job at teaching children about personal finances. While there are some finance classes, a lot of them aren’t personal finance, and this amazes me, especially with the number of people who have monetary difficulties. You would think that they would make it part of every grade school, high school, and college curriculum. It’s not entirely nonexistent, but not many programs offer it. Everyone has to deal with finances at some point in their life. Your net worth statements are something that you should check in with often. By this, I mean take a look at what assets and liabilities you have and every year compare them to watch your net worth increase. Your cash flow statement is also important. You must always be aware of what is coming in and what is going out on a regular basis to be sure you are always spending within your means. There’s a rule that says you should always pay yourself first. In other words, you should invest in your future by putting money away

When you’re in pain, daily activities like walking to the mailbox or reaching for a plate from the cupboard

can exacerbate inflamed joints and weak muscles. However, just simply being a human can intensify this pain, too. The reason is in your brain. For years, researchers have connected our mental well-being with our physical health. Study after study shows that those who suffer from mental illnesses also have intense bouts of pain. Physical therapy is a powerful treatment method designed to use your body’s strength and movement to stimulate physical healing. But to holistically recover from an injury or pain, you may have to also address your mental health.
Mesopotamia, the Persians were known for creating beautiful, calming gardens for this very purpose, and the first documented use of gardening for medical reasons is from the 1800s. Since then, connecting humans to plants is now a common treatment in many countries. What do I have to do? To effectively engage in horticulture therapy, you have to engage with nature. Be on the Lookout! Watch Out for These Internet Scams
During tax season, the risk of cybersecurity threats and scammers is at an all-time high, and older adults tend to be the unfortunate victims. If you fall victim to a tax, retirement account, or Social Security scam, the damages can be monumental financially, and it can be very challenging to correct. Awareness is the key to avoiding them! Have you ever received an email that seems like it’s from a reputable source, asking for your information to verify your account? Phishing is one type of scam in which victims are tricked into giving out their valuable information by impersonating government agencies or businesses. Sometimes, the email may just contain a link that can install malware on your computer or cell that collects the information after you click on it. One thing to keep in mind is that the IRS does not contact you by email. Do not click on these links or give out information via email! When it comes to your Social Security number, you surely know not to give it out to just anyone. However, scammers will oftentimes call retirees, stating they are a Social Security
Administration employee, providing any number of reasons as to why you
need to “confirm” your Social Security number. If this ever happens, hang up. You can always call the Social Security Administration office yourself to verify that everything is all right. While bank accounts are tricky for scammers to get ahold of, many try for retirement accounts, which many people go months without checking in on. After all, when is the last time you checked your 401(k) balance? Make it a habit to check as often as you check your bank balance! Keep in mind that these are only a few of the ways scammers try to get crafty. If you have any concerns about your retirement accounts or financial situation, give us a call today to address them! We are happy to help!

Tough Winter? Check Out These Snowbird Spots
Temecula, California Temecula is a great spot for those who want to be by the action — it’s just 90 minutes away from Los Angeles — but prefer scenic views and a quiet lifestyle. Enjoy locally made wine, hot air balloon rides, and a little gambling. Plus, you could bring the camper and tour the California coast, making Temecula your little home base away from the RV.
“Snowbirding,” the act of leaving your home residence during the cold months, is a popular alternative to permanently moving, so you can escape winter, travel, and stay connected to the community you have up north. If you’re considering the snowbird lifestyle, don’t choose just a ny city. Check out four of the “hottest” spots for migrating! Phoenix, Arizona If you want a naturally warm winter without humidity, look no further than Phoenix! It’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Bask in the beautiful weather and spy the scenic, red-orange mountains that surround the city, knowing that you don’t have to shovel snow or deal with beachgoers. It’s a win-win! Charleston, South Carolina If you want an ocean lifestyle, why not find one with some Southern hospitality? Charleston, South Carolina, enjoys pleasant year-round temperatures, is just a short drive from the beach, and is known for its welcoming community! History buffs will love Charleston’s rich preservation, and there is an outdoor activity for pretty much anyone.
