Enjoying the Market Roller Coaster Ride Lessons From the VIP Line

We often think of summer as the ideal season for family vacations, but I’ve found there is no better time to travel and be outside than in October. You just can’t beat the weather on a crisp fall day, and with more families in school, there are fewer people on the road. It’s perfect!

I loved every moment of that Disney adventure, and if I could, I would go back and ride those roller coasters again! (VIP pass included, of course.) There’s something about flying down a track, fully confident that you’re safely secured in your seat, as you launch into the air. It’s exhilarating!

However, today, it would result in whiplash. Getting old sucks sometimes.

Actually, it was October when my wife, our youngest daughter, and I had one of our greatest vacations.

The market can be a lot like that, too. Sometimes it’s a rush of excitement, flying by quickly and growing rapidly. Other times, we look at projections and rates of return, only to feel our stomach drop to our feet. It can be difficult to not experience “market whiplash,” as each new day can bring an unexpected win or a confusing blow to our economy, but it’s important that we don’t get tangled in the day-to-day. The market is a growing, evolving thing that can’t be defined by a single day. The key is to view the market as one amusement park. (Although, admittedly, it’s not as “amusing” as we would all like it to be!) Some days are thrilling and offer a rush of excitement. Others send you lurching for the nearest trash bin, lest you lose your lunch. Regardless, it’s important that we keep getting on the rides, pushing past the bad days, and creating memories (or results) that last a lifetime. It’s something to think about this October, especially as we prepare for the end of another year. (Are you ready for 2022? I have some guidance on getting prepared on Page 3!) You’re not “too old” to ride the market, nor should you fear it like many fear getting on rides at theme parks. Stay steady, stay calm, and enjoy it. Patience will always be rewarded.

When my youngest was 19 years old, we booked passes to Disney World and opted for the spendy (but soon considered worthwhile) VIP passes. Admittedly, I almost had a coronary when the charge for the VIP passes appeared on my credit card bill, but the trepidation was gone the moment we “budged” our way to the front of our first ride. We spent all day riding every single ride at the park. We would waltz from ride to ride, leisurely waiting only a few moments for each, and side-step the daggers from those who waited hours for a roller coaster cart we were suddenly ushered into before them. At the end of the day, with every ride complete and our VIP passes expired, we decided to check out a few of our favorite rides again. But after waiting for just one ride for more than two hours, we decided there were better ways to spend our time! (And we saw the true value of our VIP passes.) Have You Heard Us on the Radio Yet? Tune in to KTRS 550 AM radio every Saturday from 3–4 p.m. as Jeff Zufall and Josh Gilbert discuss all things taxes and financial planning. From innovative strategies to optimize your benefits to breaking down proposed and current legislative measures, Jeff and Josh guide you through the most pressing topics in the financial world today.

So, enjoy the ride like you’re a VIP passholder at Disney World in October. Now that’s an experience worth having.

What if you could harness the knowledge and skill possessed by some of the world’s top CEOs — specifically eight of them? With investment expert and author William N. Thorndike Jr.’s “The Outsiders: Eight Unconventional CEOs and Their Radically Rational Blueprint for Success,” you can. After years of analyzing investments and the companies behind meteoric climbs on Wall Street, Thorndike has compiled stories, lessons, and tactics used by eight CEOs whose methods and beliefs don’t mirror those of other leaders — unconventional leaders like Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson or SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose companies’ growth speaks volumes for their methodology. Thorndike examines the successes of various business leaders, like pet food company Ralston Purina’s CEO or Berkshire Hathaway’s top leader, to discover what makes these companies so successful, even as they quietly grow. Through his storytelling and deep-dive into the mindsets of these CEOs, Thorndike offers readers various perspectives on a different way to amass success. Thorndike also illuminates how many of these top business minds were quietly outpacing their loud, celebrity-like counterparts. For example, frugality is a major component of their success, while most others view a singular metric as the biggest determining factor in their company’s long-term success. Together, many of these top CEOs often value the human elements of their business, attributing the people they have Tap Into a Successful CEO’s Mind How ‘The Outsiders’ Provides an Unconventional Road Map

3 HAUNTED SPOTS EVERY GHOST BELIEVER WILL LOVE GHOSTS ACROSS AMERICA October is one of the best months for travel in the U.S. With mild temperatures and gorgeous, colorful leaves everywhere, there’s no better time for a cross-country road trip. Add some Halloween flair to your October vacation with these three ghostly attractions.

Visit the most haunted town in the U.S. —Waynesville, Ohio. Sure, New Orleans may have a spooky

past, but it doesn’t compare to Waynesville. Many residents and visitors think this Ohio town is rife with ghosts. You may hear cries to “hurry up” at The

Hammel House Inn, where many tunnels for the underground railroad came through, or you could see the apparition of a businessman from the 1800s who “never checked out.” Other sources report hauntings at the town’s historical society, Museum at the Friends Home, including a little girl who moves toys

and sits on the porch. The society leans into the local fascination and hosts regular walking ghost tours and ghost hunting classes.

Stay a while at Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff, Arizona. Guests at Hotel Monte Vista have often enjoyed long stays at the downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, hotel, but not everyone leaves. Constructed in 1927, the hotel is host to a number of reported ghosts. The most well-known is an elderly woman who would spend hours rocking in the chair in her room. Today, her chair can be found moving on its own. Another popular visitor is the ghost of a bellboy who knocks on doors and announces that room service has arrived — only, no one's there. Is there a monster in Pine Barrens, New Jersey? This one’s for those who love mysterious creatures. Pine Barrens is a mass of forested land that spreads across seven counties in New Jersey — and its most famous resident isn’t human. The Jersey Devil has a long, storied history and is said to be a combination of many animals: Its body is shaped like a kangaroo with wings. It has the head of a dog but the face of a horse. The creature is believed to have had a sickly start to life in 1735 and has stayed to haunt the forest’s inhabitants and even those who visit the area today.

working for them as one of the most important parts of their company growth. As you read through the various lessons and experiences of these CEOs, you find models emerging. Some of the tactics may work for you, while others prove that unconventional methods were never out of the box to begin with. All told, Thorndike’s “The Outsiders” is a reminder that sometimes the quiet ones make the most progress.

You can learn more about Thorndike’s book at Goodreads.com, or you can find it on Amazon.com or your favorite bookstore.

2022 Is Almost Here ... 3 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE YOUR FINANCES

Here’s something that’s downright scary: 2022 is only three months away!

much you can contribute every month, you should always hit that cap. This allows you to save as much as possible toward your future retirement, and in many cases, these funds will grow as you continue to work. Plus, if you roll over contributions into a Roth IRA, you could reap even bigger benefits by maxing out savings. (Keep reading!) Convert your retirement savings to a Roth. Roth IRAs are one of the best ways to grow your retirement fund tax- free, and many people look to convert their retirement savings into a Roth to gain this benefit. However, people make a mistake when they choose to convert their savings early in the year. If anything were to change with your financial situation — whether you would make more or less money — it would blow your entire conversion ratio out of alignment. Do this in October, when the end of your year is pretty well mapped out. With 2022 just months away, now is the time to prepare your personal finance goals to better align with your needs. Contact Capital Advisory Group if you need assistance with tax planning.

It’s hard to believe 2021 is almost over, but as we enter the unofficial start to the holiday season, you should be preparing for the end of another year. If you haven’t already begun to set your goals for the new year and finish your 2021 projects, now is the time. This should be done for all aspects of your life, but if you’re unsure about where to begin for your personal financial goals, consider this a go-to guide. Check your withholding. Many workers pay an income tax throughout the year, and you decide how much of your paycheck to give to the IRS. However, as tax laws and your circumstances change, this withholding number should change along with it. Consider this every year in October, make changes as needed, and have peace of mind come next year. Max out your retirement. If you can afford to, there is no reason why you should limit how much you save toward retirement. While there are federal restrictions on how

Make Raking Easier in 3 Steps

3 WAYS TO MAKE RAKING EASIER

Wear the right clothes. Bugs, dirt, germs, and other gross organisms like to live in piles of leaves. So, as you rake, pile, bag, and discard your leaves, wear the proper equipment to protect yourself from illness or injury. Wear long sleeve shirts and full-length pants to protect your skin from irritants, and when possible, scoop up leaves with gloved hands. Eye protection can prevent a vision injury, and if you have asthma or another breathing condition, consider wearing a mask. With the right gear, you’ll tackle your yard in no time. Don’t wait. Perhaps the biggest mistake a homeowner can make is waiting until the first snowfall to rake up the leaves. You don’t want to rake when the trees in your yard are still full, but you also shouldn’t let a heavy leaf covering stay in your yard for too long. This environment is a welcome scenario for pests, and it can be unhealthy for your lawn. Find the sweet spot — 3–4 days of heavy leaf cover on your lawn — and get to work. You may have to do a light raking later in the fall, but your lawn and home will be healthier thanks to your early bird tendency.

October is a gorgeous month in Missouri! Our fall leaves reach their peak color around mid-October, but if you’re a homeowner, you know these leaves come with a caveat: Someone has to rake them up! Here are three tips to make it easier.

Don’t put your mower away.

That’s right. Why rake the leaves when you can simply turn them into mulch for your yard. You can do this by using a mulching lawn mower, which will allow you to trim your yard, provide nutrients to your grass ahead of the harsh winter, and cut down on the amount of time you spend doing yard work. However, as with grass, don’t mow over wet leaves. You can also collect the leaves in a mower bag and dispose of them

Bonus: Be sure to check with your municipality for leaf disposal requirements and recommendations!

per your municipality’s guidelines.
