Barbie Fulk Is Retiring CELEBRATING A DENTAL BLESSING

Barbie has told us that for her, it feels like a very fast 35 years went by. “At first, 35 years seemed like it would take forever, but it honestly flew by,” Barbie said. “My favorite parts of each day of my career have been helping people achieve great looking smiles and getting to know them on a personal level. The ability to connect with them every time they come in is so much fun.” Barbie’s love for the industry and compassion for her patients has surely shown through in her work. After 35 years in dentistry, Barbie has witnessed many positive and influential changes take place in the industry. Today, we now have tooth-colored materials available to make dental work invisible to the naked eye, digital X-rays, and improved infection control to protect both the staff and patients. Technology has almost created a whole new profession with the many advancements including diagnostic imaging and intraoral cameras. With so many advancements, we are able to drastically improve the comfort and convenience for the patients! In retirement, Barbie is looking forward to concentrating on just living and enjoying life to the fullest. She has two sons, Ryan and Tanner, and two grandchildren, Avery and RJ. “I’m looking forward to spending time with my mother, who is 84, and my husband,” Barbie tells us. She hopes to visit Nashville, take a few cruises, and maybe take her grandchildren to Disney World in the near future. “When you work hard, do your best, and give 100% all of the time, it pays off. You are never going to start out on top, and you have to work to get there, but with a great work ethic, you will achieve wonderful things,” Barbie stated. Barbie, we are so grateful that you chose to call Caring Modern Dentistry a home while you finished out the end of your career. We are thankful for the bonds we’ve created and look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in retirement!

I’m sure you all know and love our hygiene assistant, Barbie Fulk, as much as we do! We are both happy and sad to announce that she will be retiring at the end of this year! We are thrilled for her to be able to enjoy time with her family and experience a fruitful retirement, but we must admit, we are sorrowful to see her go! Barbie has a fabulous work ethic and passion for her job and clients. She’s a true asset. Barbie started out her career in dentistry in 1986 at the age of 22. For 30 years, she worked as a dental assistant with Dr. Grubb in Greensboro, North Carolina. “I assisted where they needed me,” Barbie explained. “It was an amazing experience to be able to work with the same people and see the same patients time after time. It allowed me to create some outstanding relationships. The same patients have known me since I was 22 years old. Some actually thought I was Dr. Grubb’s daughter, and now, I’m the oldest in Dr. Adams’ office! Dr. Grubb was a dream to work for, too! I had a really great time.” Barbie worked with Dr. Grubb until he retired, then worked with his replacement for a short time until she found us at Caring Modern Dentistry. “Having the opportunity to finish out my last five years in dentistry with such an outstanding office and dentist as caring as Dr. Adams has been a blessing,” Barbie stated. “Working part time with this staff has been a great way to end my career. The patients — every single one of them — are fabulous and have made my job so much fun. I think it’s so important to love what you do.”

Providing quality dental care for you and your family

The drinks of choice for winter are usually warm and cozy — apple cider, hot chocolate, and wassail all have their place on the table. But no rule says you have to drink something hot when it’s snowy outside. In fact, a cold beverage might keep you warmer! A study from the Thermal Ergonomics Lab at the University of Ottawa found that when you drink something hot, it can cause you to sweat more and, as a result, will actually cool you off more than a cold drink! Crazy, right? Of course, you could probably reverse the heat loss by bundling up in a sweater so your sweat doesn’t evaporate. But if you’re in your warm, cozy home, why not go for a cold drink like a smoothie? You can even add some holiday cheer to your healthy(ish) treat with one of these five seasonal ingredients. 1. Peppermint — For a protein-rich smoothie that tastes like a candy cane, blitz together almond milk, yogurt, almond butter, mint leaves, ground cinnamon, and a few drops of peppermint extract. 2. Cinnamon — If you love chocolate chip cinnamon rolls, you need to try the smoothie version! Frozen bananas, coconut milk, vanilla yogurt, cacao powder (which is packed with antioxidants), vanilla extract, and cinnamon are the secrets to a healthy version of your favorite Christmas breakfast. SMOOTHIES AREN’T JUST FOR SUMMER ANYMORE! 5 Holiday Ingredients to Toss Into Your Blender

3. Cranberries — Cranberries are both festive and packed with vitamins and antioxidants that may help fight heart disease and cancer. To cash in on those benefits, whip up a smoothie with frozen cranberries, pear slices, goji berries, orange juice, coconut milk, and flax seeds. 4. Ginger — What screams Christmas more than gingerbread? You can make a delicious smoothie version of the cookie with rolled oats, chia seeds, yogurt, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, vanilla extract, and molasses to reap the anti-inflammatory and nausea- fighting benefits of ginger. 5. Eggnog — Eggnog is far from a healthy drink, but it’s a holiday favorite! To enjoy it in a new way, blend it up with a scoop of vanilla protein powder and ice after your workout.

The Benefits of Dental Implants SMILE WITH CONFIDENCE Dental implants are an effective solution for lost or missing teeth and are a great option for many patients, as they help them feel better, look better, regain confidence, and have a better quality of life. They match your natural teeth. Just like your natural teeth, dental implants are versatile and come in all different sizes, shapes, and shades. They also behave just like your real teeth, so you can brush, floss, and chew as you normally would. Implants can also be put in right beside your natural teeth and will match seamlessly, as they fit right in the gap and match the color. They support your surrounding teeth. If you lose a tooth, the adjacent teeth become subject to shifting because they lack the support of a tooth next to them. This can lead to a severely crooked smile and some serious misalignment in your mouth. A dental implant provides the same support as a natural tooth. They prevent bone loss. When you lose teeth, you also lose bone mass in your jaw. If a missing tooth and root is not replaced with an implant within a year, bone loss can potentially occur. Dentures do not connect to anything and can lead to deterioration of the empty spot where the tooth once was.

They prevent changes to your facial shape. Dental implants both protect and support your facial structure. When bone loss occurs in the jaw, your face can lose structure and sag as a result. Wrinkles, thinner lips, and a pointed chin may also result from missing teeth in your mouth. Implants mimic teeth and prevent these facial changes from occurring. They make it easier to speak. Oftentimes, missing teeth can impact your ability to form certain sounds and words with your mouth. If you have dentures in, they can also slide around while you are trying to speak, significantly impacting the way you talk. Implants are a great solution for this! If you are a dental implant candidate or have any questions when it comes to implants, give us a call today! We are prepared to help you smile with confidence!

Helping Hands Monkey Helpers for the Win

No Monkeying Around Helping Hands Monkey Helpers for the Win

You’ve heard of service dogs, but what about service monkeys? For many years now, capuchin monkeys have been lending helping hands to people with disabilities! Helping Hands Monkey Helpers, located at Monkey College in Boston, Massachusetts, is a nonprofit organization designed to help people with disabilities and mobility issues, such as quadriplegia, by pairing them with a monkey service animal. These simian helpers are specifically trained to help with daily tasks while providing companionship, happiness, and a renewed sense of purpose that many struggle with when navigating an injury or disability. When monkeys graduate, they will have developed the ability to navigate major household appliances and electronics as well as basic items within the home. They can even retrieve a canned beverage from the refrigerator, open it, and put a straw in it! A service monkey can also assist with retrieving things that are dropped or out of reach, turning pages in a book, scratching an itch, pushing buttons on electronic devices, and performing other menial tasks within the home.

Each human applicant and the capuchin monkeys undergo a pairing process to find the best fit for placement! A social worker and placement specialist work together to sift through applications and determine which monkeys will be the right choice for the applicants based on lifestyle preferences and the tasks that will be most helpful to the person with disabilities. Plus, Helping Hands Monkey Helpers ensures that the monkeys are completely free of charge to the recipients!

The human-animal bond created along the journey after placement is absolutely beautiful.

Helping Hands Monkey Helpers brings love, companionship, and laughter to many who are fortunate enough to work with the organization. These monkeys are the best, hands down. And, monkeys, thank you for going to monkey college, and thank you for your service!
