MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Central Catholic family: It's a great honor to be the new full-time president of Central Catholic High School. I'm very grateful to all the faculty, staff, parents, and students who have given me advice, prayers, and support. Every note and handshake is much appreciated. I will do my best to make sure Central Catholic continues its legacy for many more years. I want to express my gratitude to the Board of Directors for their commitment to finding the most qualified individual to lead Central Catholic and for affirming that I am the ideal candidate for the position. Finally, I want to thank my wife and family for their support as I take on this new challenge. I am committed to the Catholic Marianist mission of Central Catholic and will work tirelessly to uphold its values.

What a year this has been! You will read an article in this issue about an alumnus that designed and painted a new mural on campus that reads “Central Will Shine” and pays homage to our fight song. It certainly has been the Year of the Buttons as our entire student body has shined bright. Our Central High students have had some incredible successes! Here are just a few examples: • Voted #1 Best Private School in MySA Reader’s Choice Poll • The JROTC Color Guard and Chaminade Guard named the #1 team in the nation • Four Military Academy Appointments (West Point x2, Air Force Academy, US Naval Academy) • District & Regional Champs for Football, with 2 All-American Team Selections • TAPPS State Champions for Cross Country and Track & Field • TAPPS State Finalist for Baseball • TAPPS Academic Meet Gold Medalists

• Two National Merit Finalists • Robotics First Place Champs

And the list can go on and on… When our students succeed in the classroom and on the field of play…Central Will Shine.

When our alumni achieve great things in their respective fields and in their personal lives…Central Will Shine. When our young men and alumni become filled with the Spirit of Mary and embrace our Marianist charism to become good sons, good brothers, good husbands, and good fathers…Central Will Shine. Please enjoy this issue of the Blue & White as it will showcase some of the achievements I mentioned above. Central has and will continue, to shine bright for all to see. This year has been one I will never forget for many reasons. The most important one of all is that each of you plays a part in Central’s legacy. With a Loyal Heart,

Jason Longoria ’96, President

WELCOME

JASON LONGORIA ’96

It is a great privilege to announce Jason Longoria has been named the President for Central Catholic by the Board of Directors. “Almost a year ago, the Board named Longoria as our Interim President, and now it is conclusive that we made the right decision, and we are all ready to begin this next chapter of Leadership,” says Board Chair Priscilla Gonzaba. “As an alumnus of Central Catholic High School, Jason exemplifies our teachings and mission. His knowledge of the school's rich history, along with his passion for succeeding, will help carry us into the future. He will continue the legacy upon which Central Catholic High School was founded and what has grounded us for 170 years.” The appointment is the culmination of a rigorous review process by the Board of Directors, which conducted an internal review and held robust conversations with the school's leadership team and partnering organizations. The process also included direct collaboration with the Council of the Marianist Province of the U.S. Both groups unanimously agreed to this decision. Longoria’s connection with Central Catholic runs deep. He is a 1996 graduate of Central Catholic and previously served in a professional capacity as the school’s Director of Advancement for three years prior to being named interim President. He graduated from St. Mary’s University and worked for AT&T for 14 years as part of their Leadership Development Program. Jason and his wife, Annelisa, have been married for 12 years and have two children, Adeline (5) and future Button Class of 2037, Santiago (3). “I am incredibly humbled and honored to have been chosen to lead my alma mater into this next chapter of Central Catholic’s illustrious history,” stated Longoria.

ADMISSIONS

RECRUITMENT SEASON IN FULL SWING! The 21-22 recruitment season has been an exciting time for the Admissions Team! While still keeping caution for the safety and well-being of all, the Admissions Team has been able to shift back to semi-normal recruitment events and return to engaging in-person with inquiring families. Furthermore, the Admissions Team, previously just Bethany Herman and Mauricio Ortega-Rios ’16, happily welcomed new teammate Stephanie Takas-Mercer in September to the admissions office. The growth of the team has allowed for expansion in strategy and efforts. The team has been able to host more family campus tours, accomplish in-person middle school visits, utilize a new on line application system, and revive traditional events. One highly anticipated in-person program that came back to campus has been the “Be a Button” Shadow Day Program. Central Catholic has received upwards of 100 visiting 8th-grade young men who have spent an entire day engaging in classroom instruction and student life on our campus. This interaction has been an excellent way for future Buttons to experience the Brotherhood! Shadow opportunities will extend through the end of April, which the last two shadow days being set aside for 7th-grade students. The Admissions Team has witnessed many eager 7th-grade young men attending our annual Middle School Tailgate, eGamers Night, and scheduling campus tours! Central Catholic is currently building the Class of 2026 and is seeing a positive enrollment trend with incoming freshmen and transfer students for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. It has been a successful school year thus far, and the Admissions Team wants to sincerely thank this community – students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and champions – for the continued support!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

DR. LEE HERNANDEZ The first year of the school year has come and gone. I cannot be prouder of our young men, faculty, staff, and community. We started in August by welcoming the Class of 2025 and our new transfer students during the New Student Orientation. This event introduces new Buttons to our Marianist faith, our Central Catholic traditions, the infamous Section R, and what it means to be part of the Brotherhood. After the first couple of weeks, sounds of laughter filled the halls, and the sights of everyone interacting in the classrooms and during lunch were rejuvenating. A lot has happened in the last several months. With this being my first year here, things have moved fast. The young men have evolved from walking past me hesitantly to comfortably approaching me to say good morning or good afternoon. I’ve watched our young men respectfully clean up after themselves

at the end of lunch. I’ve observed them holding the door open for others. I’ve watched our teachers greet their students at the door as they enter. Teachers have invited me into their classrooms to see what great things they are doing with their students. These are just a few intangibles that I am blessed to see daily. You should know that Central Catholic has laid a tremendous foundation with these young men and for generations to come. I cannot help but be excited for the remainder of the year and what the future holds for our beloved Central Catholic. I am truly blessed to be a part of such a storied institution! It has been fun working with the young men, meeting the families, and many of the alumni. I sincerely appreciate all of the support from everyone during the transition. I look forward to the journey as we place all of our trust in each other and our Lord. We will all walk together. May God continue to bless us, and may He bless our Central Catholic. Grace and Peace, Dr. Lee Hernández, Principal

Seniors Ernesto Gomez (L) and Albert Wylie (R), pictured with Principal Dr. Hernández Students Receive a Perfect Score on Math section of SAT Exam

Academically, our Buttons do not disappoint! As of this Spring, we have two young men who scored perfect scores on the math section of the SAT along with two National Merit Scholar Finalists. Next year, will be adding a few more advanced academic classes while strengthening our partnerships with a couple of universities to provide more opportunities. We have one student with full tuition paid to Yale University, and our list of college acceptances is second to none. ACADEMIC UPDATE

CADETS AWARDED GOLD STAR JROTC

On February 22, 2022, our JROTC Corps of Cadets went through JPA, a rigorous accreditation process that rates a JROTC program in several capacities. The goal for any program is to obtain the Gold Star Standard, which means achieving 95% or higher. Our corps of cadets scored a nearly-flawless 99.4% and again achieved a Gold Star that coins us as an Honor Unit with Distinction. For perspective, only about 10% of programs earn this distinction, and it’s exceptionally uncommon to hit the mark above 99%—a truly remarkable job by our program’s leaders. CPT (RET) Rhodes, SGM (RET) Carradine, SGM (RET) Allard, and 1SG (RET) Rocha have done a phenomenal job leading and preparing these young men and young women who represented the corps of cadets with honor and integrity. Today is a product of their leadership and consistency in holding a meaningful standard. Special recognition to Brigade Commander Luke Guajardo, Brigade XO Teagan Flinn, and Brigade CSM Adrian Castillo for being the type of young men that make Central proud. Congratulations to all of our cadets for the planning and execution of this honor! Without every one of our cadets, our program would not be the same. Finally, a special thank you to Providence and Incarnate Word High Schools for their cadets and parents’ contributions to the program.

MARIANIST HERITAGE WEEK AT CENTRAL CATHOLIC

The Marianist commitment to education, community, collaboration, and service was celebrated from February 7th to 11th during Central Catholic High School's annual observance of Marianist Heritage Week. Activities are designed to keep Central Catholic High School's heritage in people's minds. Central Catholic High School is shepherded in the tradition of the Society of Mary, founded in Bordeaux, France, in 1817 by Father William Joseph Chaminade. Chaminade's vision continues to guide the mission of CCHS, particularly in the efforts to "internalize" the Charism and provide students with: Formation in Faith, an Integral, Quality Education, Family Spirit, Service, Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation, and Adaptation and Change. Some of the week's highlights of our week included Marianist Shirt day! Happy Birthday, Marianist Founders! Campus Ministry provided cupcakes to all during lunch. Blessed William Joseph Chaminade Mass. Congratulations, Marianist Heritage Award Recipient Luke Hoenigman. This award is presented annually at the Chaminade Day Mass to a Faculty or Staff member. The individual chosen exemplifies the spirit of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade by demonstrating the Marianist Charism.

DR. WAYNE F. YAKES ’71 PROFESSOR, MD, FSIR, FCIRSE

As a young boy, Wayne Yakes did not have a choice on where he was going to attend high school. His mother, Frances worked 3 jobs to send him and his sister to Catholic grade school because she knew that Central Catholic High School was the best school in Texas for Wayne to attend. While attending Central Catholic Army Instructor Sergeant Major Johnnie Salazar encouraged Wayne to continue with Drill Team leadership, become Brigade XO his senior year, and pursue an Army ROTC Scholarship. Because of that decision, Dr. Yakes was awarded the scholarship to attend Rice University and Creighton University School of Medicine with zero debt and zero worry for his mom to pay for it.

Dr. Yakes says, “This is all due to the hard work of my mom and because of Central Catholic.” He served in the U.S. Army for 12 years and was honorably discharged in 1991. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne Paratrooper School and U.S. Army Ranger School. He then attended Creighton University School of Medicine and graduated in 1979. Dr. Yakes completed his Internship and Radiology Residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado and was board certified in Radiology in 1983. Dr. Yakes created and authored the “Yakes AVM Classification System” which drastically lowers the complication rate in treating and curing AVMs. This is the most challenging area of vascular medicine. Patients from across the world come to Colorado to see Dr. Yakes, as he is considered to be the world leader in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular malformations. Dr. Yakes is the Past President of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies.

YOUNG ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: ROMAN PEREZ ’16, ARTIST

Recently we sat down for an interview with alumni Roman Perez ’16 to chat about his experience as a self- taught artist. Mr. Perez’s art style is predominantly pop art. Roman also donated two paintings for the 2022 CC Gala and will be involved in more projects in the future.

@soyempire

Q: How did you get started in your art career? A: Growing up, I enjoyed taking art classes during or after school. This led to me developing a love for making art, and in my senior year at Central Catholic School I had an exhibition of my work. At the time it didn’t seem important because football was more important to me, but now that I have some distance from it all - having seen my paintings displayed in a public space - I can truly say that these were some of the most special moments of my life. Q: Have you done any commission pieces? If so, what were they? A: I was very honored to make a Commission for Whataburger for Dia De Los Muertos last year. It was an amazing experience to be able to represent my culture and heritage in one painting, my artwork is featured on their Instagram account. I have also created art pieces for Gus’s Fried Chicken and pro athletes Myles Garret, Raúl Allegre, Mario Barrios, and Keldon Johnson from the San Antonio Spurs. Q: What future goals and plans do you have? A : I’m excited to make more Whataburger art this year and focus even more on my merchandise brand. I will also be creating my own NFT project, as well as designing a Designer Toy. Q: What Does Central Catholic mean to you? A: There are few places in the world that have such a special impact on me, and Central Catholic is one of them. Every time I visit, the staff makes me feel so welcomed and at home. It’s amazing to be part of such an incredible community - it feels like family to me! And being an alumni means that I am connected to this place for life, which is something truly priceless.
