Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second most common cancer in American women, after skin cancer. One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, with over 250,000 diagnoses each year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I wanted to take a moment to discuss this important topic. As a husband, father of three daughters, and a grandfather to one granddaughter, women’s health is very important to me. I want the best for my family, all of the women on my staff, and my female clients. We all have women we care about in our lives, so they should not be left to shoulder the burden of breast cancer on their own. (And while less common, men can get breast cancer, too.) Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a way to bring attention to a disease that was still sometimes considered taboo. In 1974, First Lady Betty Ford had broken barriers while announcing her breast cancer diagnosis, but the topic was still considered by many people to be unmentionable in mixed company. Breast Cancer Awareness Month aimed to break the stigma and encourage early detection. Thankfully, those efforts have proven fruitful. Between 1989 and 2018, deaths from breast cancer dropped 41%. Since 2007, the rate of death from breast cancer in women over 50 has also continued to decrease. Early detection is credited with much of this success. examination to check for any changes in breast size or shape and a physical examination to check for lumps should be completed. When completing a self-exam, it’s important to remember that breast tissue extends to the underarms, which should also be checked. If you notice a lump, unexplained physical changes, or pain, you should contact your doctor for a full examination. Eight out of 10 lumps are not cancerous, but 40% of diagnosed breast cancer cases are first noticed through a self-exam. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Self-exams will not catch all cases of breast cancer, so yearly mammograms are recommended for women over 40. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue to check for lumps and calcifications that cannot yet be physically felt. Mammograms are painful for some women and uncomfortable for most others, but they only take a few moments to complete and have the potential to save your life. If you or a loved one are concerned about the cost of a mammogram, you should know that there are programs to help. The CDC offers a National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program for low- income, uninsured, and underinsured women. You can see if you qualify and learn more at CDC.gov/cancer/nbccedp/screenings.htm. New York State also offers similar services, with details at ​Health.NY.gov/ diseases/cancer/services. You Can Use WHAT to Tidy Up?! 4 DEEP-CLEANING HACKS TO PREP FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Prepping for the holidays is exciting and fun, but it requires tons of planning, cooking, decorating, and cleaning. To avoid getting bogged down while preparing for cheerful celebrations with friends and family, try these easy ways to get your house sparkling clean and ready to host. ROLL THE CEILINGS When it comes to ceilings, especially if they are textured, thoroughly cleaning off dust, dander, and cobwebs can be challenging. When you use a broom, pieces of dust and debris typically go flying around, making a larger mess. However, if you whip out a painting roller, dampen it, and roll your ceilings just like you are painting, you are sure to get the job done! SOCKS ON YOUR HANDS Have you ever run your finger along a panel of your blinds and it comes up black? Blinds tend to be huge dust collectors, but are often forgotten when cleaning. By throwing some socks on your hands, you can get back to clean blinds. All you have to do is find a pair of old socks, “glove up,” and dampen them. From there, if you grip each individual blind panel and slide your hand along the length of it, you will gather tons of nasty dirt and dust onto the sock. CLEANING BALLS Utilizing tennis balls for your house chores may sound strange. However, when drying a bulky bed comforter in your dryer, adding a few tennis balls will ensure the stuffing does not gather all to one side. The balls help keep everything nice and even. PILLOWCASES AND FANS Your ceiling fans collect all of the nasties — dirt, dust, bugs, and allergens. For an easy way to clean them without spreading all the grime around your home, turn to old pillowcases! Simply slip the pillowcase over each individual fan blade and then wipe. All of the debris will end up in the pillowcase itself. A clean home is the key to happy living and is paramount for hosting over the holidays. With these tricks up your sleeve, you are now a cleaning expert!

Senior trial attorney George Gridelli isn’t shy about pointing out that he’s the oldest attorney at Cellino Law — it just means he has more experience. His journey began when he finished college and realized he wasn’t passionate about his psychology major. His parents suggested he become a lawyer and even offered to pay for his education. “I had very generous and loving parents,” George notes. “With their help, I went to law school, and I enjoyed it.”

He was admitted to the bar in 1975 but didn’t immediately find his niche. He worked in a district attorney’s office and also had his own practice for 15 years. He handled many different types of cases at his firm, but personal injury law wasn’t yet in the mix. Then George’s aunt had a falling accident at home and broke her hip. “I tried to find another firm to take the case,” he remembers, “but no one really wanted it because she was elderly and couldn’t remember how the accident happened.” Left with few other options, George tried the case himself and won a $795,000 verdict. From there, a passion was born. George has now been in personal injury for over 25 years. He spent 11 of those years at Ross’ old firm, Cellino and Barnes, and has been with Cellino Law since the beginning. “I love being able to help somebody who’s injured,” George says. “When the client is happy, there’s no better feeling.” He’s proud to note that for 25 years, he’s had an AV or “preeminent” rating — the highest possible — in the peer review system attorneys use to rate each other. George has been happily married for over 40 years, with two grown children and two grandchildren. To decompress, he loves playing golf on the weekend. He’s also an amateur magician, which he finds to be a lot of fun. “Every office party or birthday, I’m asked to do a little magic,” he says. “I’m actually learning a new card trick today!” George is quick to point out that he wouldn’t be where he is today without his support staff and paralegal, and he loves the team he works with. “It’s not always easy when your boss is a lot younger than you,” George admits, “but the firm appreciates my talents and respects my opinions. It’s great to work with Ross and the people he has here.”

Bair Hugger Victims Get Their Day in Court U.S. Court of Appeals Reinstates Lawsuits Against 3M The lawyers at Cellino Law continue to battle major manufacturers on behalf of individuals injured by defective medical products. One such litigation is against 3M company for its Bair Hugger warming device. The 3M Bair Hugger device was developed in the 1980s to keep patients warm during surgery by circulating warm air around them. Orthopedic surgeries involving implants are prone to infection, and the standard of care is to perform those surgeries in an “ultra-clean” operating room with a cold environment and HEPA filtration. Experts determined that the Bair Hugger device can carry bacteria to the surgical site, both through the warm air generated and contamination to the machine itself. Some studies suggest patients warmed by the Bair Hugger device were nearly four times more likely to develop a post-operative joint infection. In fact, the inventor of the device concluded that the Bair Hugger is defective and developed a new warming device that uses direct warming contact instead of blowing potentially contaminated hot air in the operating room. Nevertheless, 3M continued to market, support, and sell the Bair Hugger device. Cellino Law represents several clients who all developed joint infections following the use of the Bair Hugger device. Cases from across the country were consolidated in federal court in Minnesota, and 3M aggressively fought each and every claim. In 2019, 3M was successful

in blocking all cases, convincing the presiding judge that there was not enough evidence the Bair Hugger was defective. Our fight was far from over, and all cases were appealed. On Aug. 16, 2021, the higher court reinstated thousands of lawsuits against 3M, citing wrongly excluded testimonies from experts on the dangers posed by the device. Those injured by the Bair Hugger device can finally move toward their day in court. As with most litigation against huge corporations with unlimited resources, the fight for justice can be long and difficult. We are up for the battle on behalf of our clients who deserve full and fair compensation. Slow Cooker Squash, Kale, and Sausage Soup

This healthy, savory soup is the perfect lunch for a cool fall day.

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 Italian chicken sausages, sliced to bite-size pieces • 6 cloves garlic • 1 onion, chopped • 6–7 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed

• Salt and pepper, to taste • 4 cups chicken broth • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 3 cups kale, chopped • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

Directions

1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add sausage and cook 4–5 minutes, stirring often, then remove from the pot and set aside. 2. Add garlic and onion to the pot. Sauté 4–5 minutes. Add squash, salt, and pepper. Sauté 8 minutes. 3. In a slow cooker, combine sautéed vegetables, sausage, chicken broth, and seasonings. Cook on low heat for 3 hours and 30 minutes. 4. Open the pot and add the kale. Cook another 20 minutes, then add the red wine vinegar and stir to combine. Cook 10 more minutes, then serve and enjoy!

You don’t become America’s national pastime without learning how to adapt — and Major League Baseball (MLB) made the ultimate pivot.

BAMTech and started creating platforms for other popular sports leagues like World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and the National Hockey League (NHL). It even assisted HBO! In 2017, one of the biggest players in movies, Disney, invested in BAMTech, claiming a majority stake, and began its transition into streaming services. Soon after, as The Hustle reported in July 2021, Disney announced Disney+, a streaming platform whose features were similar to that of Netflix and BAM. In March 2021, Disney+ hit more than 100 million users, making it a powerhouse in streaming — all created because of BAMTech. Today, BAM and BAMTech are credited with being on the forefront of streaming services and continue to hold a power position over streaming and within entertainment companies. "Media companies are not good at tech and really struggle with large scale," says investment analyst Rich Greenfield in a recent ariticle on The Verge. "They don’t trust companies like Google or Amazon, who want to displace them. BAM is seen as friendly. If it spins out and starts making its own shows, that dynamic may change."

This October, MLB’s biggest stars and teams with the most wins all-time will take the field for the 2021 playoffs. The winners will be crowned champions of the world, but the league these champs call home already owns an equally prestigious title: the founders of streaming services. Their legendary reign started back in the early 2000s when former MLB commissioner Bud Selig asked every team in the league to contribute $4 million for the creation of Baseball Advanced Media (BAM). At that time, the dot-com bubble had yet to burst, and Selig wanted America’s once-favorite sport to “keep up with the times,” so to speak. BAM created a website for each team, but it soon took on other qualities that gave it an edge.
