I’m talking about our cats and dogs, Muffin, Cupcake, Hershey and Rock. August is part of the dog days of summer, so I think it’s only right to give you an update on our older two boys and how they’re handling having a new little brother.

to a town called Boone in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and spent a long weekend going for walks on the Greenway and letting the boys swim in the creek. They had a blast! They were so tired by the end of each day that they could barely make it back to the car before falling asleep. Of course, that vacation wasn’t the only way we spoil our dogs. They’re honorary team members at Chiro1Source, and they come to work with us pretty much every day. Rock has a dog bed in my office, and Hershey loves to lay claim to any empty pallets that come in. He thinks he’s the king of the castle when he has a pallet to lounge on! None of those routines have changed a bit since Bennett arrived. Both pups are great work companions, and I never get tired of scratching behind Hershey’s ears or seeing Rock jump up to get “train treats’’ from my mother-in-law every time the train chugs by. At first I thought the construction happening on our warehouse would freak the dogs out, but they’ve taken the whole noisy project in stride. As I write this, the foundation is in and the crew is working on framing out the building, which involves bolting our current building’s frame to the new one. So far, the only time Hershey and Rock got up in arms about the construction was when one of the workers stuck his head through a hole in the office wall. He was climbing around attaching a new beam to an old one about 20 feet up in the air, and the dogs went crazy barking at him. They wanted to climb up to his height and say hello!

In a word, both dogs have been fantastic. Rock still loves to lick Bennett’s face (that’s his No. 1 mission whenever he’s around), but Hershey is even more mischievous. Now that Bennett is eating solid food, he likes to sit underneath his high chair and stake a claim to anything delicious that falls to the ground.

Hershey also has a bad habit of pretending he’s a

human and stealing Bennett’s baby toys. It’s hard to blame him,

because recently Bennett got a ball in the mail that looks an awful lot like a

dog toy. Hershey is all over it! Marah and I have to watch carefully to make sure he doesn’t snatch the ball away from Bennett while he’s playing.

Construction interruptions aside, Marah, Bennett, Hershey, Rock, Muffin, Cupcake, and I make a great little family. Everyone gets along, and as a dad, that’s about all I can ask for!

Last month in this newsletter, Josh told you he has just 12,927 days to live. Discovering that number inspired him to leverage Chiro1Source to give back now rather than later. He started with a $5,000 donation to Chiro Congress, and he also set up a new system in our office. MEDITATION NOT WORKING FOR YOU? TRY A SOUND BATH As is the case with many self-care trends like yoga and meditation, what’s old is new again. The latest relaxation practice with ancient roots to make waves in modern times is sound baths. Celebs from Charlize Theron to Laurence Fishburne say they help promote relaxation and reduce stress. Kendall Jenner, who’s been public about her struggles with anxiety and sleep paralysis, also swears by the practice’s healing powers and has even started creating her own sound baths and sharing them on Instagram.

This quarter, our in-house business consultant, Randy Alexander, had the floor. He chose Operation Veggie Box (OVB), and we donated $250 to support their efforts. If you don’t live in North Carolina, you may not be familiar with this charity. It’s a hyper-local group based in Arapahoe that runs community gardens and distributes food boxes in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico County. OVB was founded in 2013 at Bethany Christian Church, and Randy has volunteered with the group for the last four years. “One facet of Operation Veggie Box is running the community gardens [they support 4–6 each year at schools, churches, and summer camps] and the other is our boxing activities,” he says. “We actually have one coming up this weekend! It’s the fresh veggies. We put together 1,500 boxes every spring, and each box includes white potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, and corn.”

While you can create a sound bath experience at home, most practitioners “bathe” at in-person sessions with “sounders” — those who create the soundscape. These sessions typically last 45–60 minutes. The idea behind the sonic experience is that bathers sit or lay in a relaxing position while gently focusing on the sounds they are immersed in. Sounders commonly use singing bowls, chimes, gongs, and other instruments to create a meditative and relaxing vibe. In fact, sounders say the vibrations of some instruments facilitate relaxation by literally changing the brainwaves. Health practitioners put it differently, saying that the practice promotes a parasympathetic autonomic nervous system response, aka a stress reduction response. Either way, the practice is a nice alternative to standard sitting meditation, which often focuses on the breath and can be difficult, especially for new practitioners.

While there hasn’t been a lot of medical research done to test the efficacy of the practice, it is becoming a more widely used supplemental treatment for stress, anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder. If you get the chance to experience one yourself, try to approach it with an open mind and open ears. You just might be surprised.
