Sweaty Seats, Melting Frosties, and the Worst/Best First Date Ever

2022 FEB

Seventeen years ago, I was sitting in my sophomore science class when

The unit was constantly running low on coolant. I had an AC recharging kit that was supposed to give it a boost, but I could barely keep on top of the thing. The second I replaced the refrigerant and oil, it would leak out and lose its “charge” again. Somehow, this didn’t cross my mind when I picked Marah up for our date that summer. At first, it went well. We drove all the way to Raleigh with the AC on blast, and I took her to Bamboo Garden for dinner. (To this day, we still have the chopsticks.) But when we got back in the car to leave, disaster struck — the AC wasn’t working, and I didn’t have my kit! The car was hot as 40 hells. In minutes, we were both dripping sweat. I rolled down the windows and we took off for Wendy’s, hoping dessert would cool us down. It did, but the Frosties melted almost before we could stick our spoons in them! By the time we hit the road for home, they were more like milkshakes than ice cream. For any other couple, this date might have been a total disaster. I could have easily been awkward and embarrassed, and Marah could have looked down her nose at me. But fortunately, we were friends first. Marah knew I’d never plan a bad date — and I knew she was a good sport when things went wrong. The hotter we got, the harder we laughed! My frustration made the whole thing even more hilarious. What could we do? We drove all the way home cracking up all sticky with sweat and melted Frosties. Best/worst first date ever. Looking back now, it’s crazy to think about how much we’ve grown up from those two kids in a hot 1993 Eagle Talon. Sometimes life goes so slowly that it seems like it will take forever to accomplish everything I want to, but with Marah, I feel like all I did was blink and suddenly we’re celebrating our eighth wedding anniversary. It’s crazy how far we’ve come. We have a baby, a business, a home, and the best pets a guy could ask for. I never could have imagined all this at 16. But even back then, I knew life got better when Marah passed me that note. Saying “no” that day was a huge mistake. Thank goodness I corrected it right away!

my future wife tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a note.

“Do you like me?” it read. “Yes or no. –Marah”

“When it was time for our first date, I went all-out preparing for it. I took a shower, wore deodorant, brushed my teeth — the whole nine yards for a 16-year-old boy. But there was one thing I didn’t think about: the sorry state of my 1993 Eagle Talon.”

My heart started pounding like crazy. I had a big crush on Marah and I knew it. Was this note a joke? A dare? ... Did she like me, too? That was crazy. Of course she didn’t.

“No,” I wrote, and passed the note back.

Instantly, regret steamrolled over me. What if this was my only chance?

“Wait, give me that thing back!” I said, snatching the note away before Marah could read it. I erased my “No” and wrote “Yes.”

The note wasn’t a joke, and I asked Marah out for the first time that summer.

When it was time for our first date, I went all-out preparing for it. I took a shower, wore deodorant, brushed my teeth — the whole nine yards for a 16-year-old boy. But there was one thing I didn’t think about: the sorry state of my 1993 Eagle Talon.

Happy Valentine’s Day,

The Talon was my very first car and I loved it to pieces, but by the time it came to me in ’06, it had a major AC problem.

Improve Your Health With Fitness Trackers Over the past decade, wearable technology has seen an incredible boom. Wearables like Fitbits and the Apple Watch used to be nothing more than glorified step counters. Since their debut, though, fitness trackers and wearables have gone through various updates that have made them essential to the fitness community as a whole. This is because wearing a fitness tracker can add great benefits to your lifestyle and can even improve your daily life.

Your New MEET MATT,

I’m a lucky guy. Not just because I have the world’s

cutest baby, but because I live in the same town as Matthew Wright — a coffee magician. Matt runs Lanoca Coffee here in Farmville and teaches coffee classes to locals. He has roasted beans for 10 years, but his love of the brew goes back a lot further. “I’ve been a coffee drinker since I was about 4 or 5 years old,” Matt says. “My great-aunt Nina lived on a little dirt road in Laurinburg called Lanoca Avenue … She let me have

HEART RATE A built-in heart rate sensor is possibly the most vital feature available in almost every wearable device and fitness tracker. There are many exercise machines that track your heart rate, but those are only useful if you know your resting heart rate. With a fitness tracker — whether you’re sleeping, sitting, running, or exercising — you will know exactly what your heart rate is and what’s normal for you. This is important because it will help you notice irregularities so you can better understand your heart health.

some of her stovetop percolator coffee when I was a little kid. We’d go to the grocery store — A&P or Winn-Dixie — and buy a bag of Eight O’Clock Coffee. We’d grind it there in the store, and that’s where I fell in love with coffee and the smell of it — there in the grocery store and on the car ride back to her house.” Some of Matt’s favorite memories are of Saturday nights with Aunt Nina watching “The Lawrence Welk Show” with mugs of black coffee and a sleeve of saltine crackers between them.

SLEEP MONITORING Many fitness trackers give you insight into your sleep routine and will even track your movements so you can find out if you were tossing and turning all night. Others go further by detecting your body temperature, heart rate, and energy expenditure. You can use this information to create a sleep schedule that works for you or make any adjustments to your sleeping conditions if they are preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep.

FUTURE UPDATES Fitness trackers and wearable devices are still a relatively new technology. Tech companies are continually updating them and introducing additional features. For example, new wearables that are hitting the market can track blood sugar, which could be incredibly beneficial to those with diabetes. Wearable tech will continue to evolve — only time will tell what features and functions companies will unveil next.

Favorite Coffee — Delivered! THE BEST ROASTER IN THE SOUTH

Matt eventually got a job in purchasing and traveled the world for five years. Drinking coffee with dark chocolate in Germany opened his eyes to the flavors in his cup, and he went down the rabbit hole of home roasting. Today, Lanoca specializes in single-origin coffees from farms worldwide.

“Rather than coming up with blends and giving them weird names for marketing, we tend to embrace the fact that this stuff can change year to year and crop to crop,” Matt says.

WE DID IT! THE WAREHOUSE IS FINALLY FINISHED

If you like a cup of joe as much as I do, you can’t go wrong ordering from Matt. He ships beans and coffee equipment around the country from his website, LanocaCoffee.com. Matt recommends the Lanoca Sampler for people new to the specialty coffee scene. It includes four 6-ounce bags of different coffees of all origins and roast levels. If you’re already into coffee, you can read Matt’s tasting notes, pick your bean, and choose between light, medium, and dark roast to get your perfect cup.

Exactly one year after we first announced our warehouse expansion project in this newsletter, it’s finally finished! The new space is big, beautiful, and fully operational. After months of construction noise and supply chain holdups, we can hardly believe it’s ours. 2021 was a tough year for a construction project. Lumber and other materials were in short supply and labor was hard to find. But our crews persevered through back orders and supply chain issues to get it done. (They also persevered through Josh’s barking dogs, but that’s another story!) As we planned, the warehouse is now 10,800 square feet — double the size of our previous space. The circular driveway lets trucks enter and exit with ease, and we have twice as much shelving to stock your favorite products. It’s so much easier to pull orders, do inventory management, and stay organized with the extra breathing room. Since the grand opening of the new warehouse this winter, we’ve had fewer “out of stock” items on our website and orders have been faster. It’s amazing what a couple thousand square feet of extra space can do! The warehouse expansion can’t make up for supply chain issues, but we can stock more of our most popular items so we rarely run low.

I hope you love this local business as much as I do!

We still have room to grow, too. There’s so much free space that Josh and Marah created a play area for Bennett on the warehouse floor! It’s full of plastic balls, and he loves playing in it while our team does inventory and packs orders (as long as Mom and Dad are nearby).

HAVE A LAUGH!

Bennett is still too young to operate the pallet jack, but it’s only a matter of time. Until then, we’ll keep pushing him around the warehouse in his red Little Tyke car.

If you’re ever in Farmville, North Carolina, we’d love to show you around the new warehouse in person. Just give us a call before you come by.

Feel Confident in Business! 3 STEPS TO IDENTIFY YOUR VALUE

We’ve all been taught that bragging is annoying, but when you’re afraid to identify your worth, it can really hurt your confidence and success in business. To prevent that from happening, here are three tips to make it easy to name your price! NO. 1: GET TO KNOW YOUR VALUE. How do we figure out our value? Specifically, how do we come up with a quantifiable method to reach an exact, irrefutable number? Well, we don’t. The best place to start is deciding who you want to be in your business and industry and building from there. With a solid mission statement and concrete affirmations that support your value in the business, you’ll gain more confidence in arriving at a price point. NO. 2: BE OPEN TO RECEIVING — AND GIVING — LOVE. Accepting compliments can be tough, but in business, compliments can be powerful catapults to your continued success. When you take time to notice all the people you’ve helped, the accomplishments you’ve achieved, and the difference you’ve made, the motivation it fosters is monumental. Keep your happy emails, texts, and reviews from clients and create an easy reference for

instant, uplifting support. If a client seems happy, never be afraid to ask for a testimonial. Many people simply need to be asked, and they’ll be happy to provide one.

In the same stride, consider the people who help you and your business every day and find ways to show appreciation. Passing that love around can make a huge difference in energizing the way you perceive your value. NO. 3: MAKE THE FINAL GAME PLAN. After considering what your offerings are likely worth, whom you’re looking to serve, and what they’d be willing to pay, you can name your final price. After all, prices don’t fall from the sky. Without obsessing over it, look at what kind of value your competitors have set for themselves. That’ll give you a great starting point.

Take good care of yourself, friends — and don’t forget that a confident price tag is a great way to do just that in your business.
