Bennett Learned to Swim! (Kind Of)
2021 OCT
Our Family’s Crazy Trip to Blowing Rock
I never took swimming lessons as a kid. Instead, my dad tried to teach
Bennett to the pool. It was his first time swimming. He loved kicking his little feet and pinwheeling his arms in the water. He was well on his way to kicking my childhood butt and learning to swim at 10 months until he decided to put his face in the water. That didn’t work out so well! (Don’t worry, he’s doing fine.) Swimming was only one of our adventures in Blowing Rock. The resort backs up to Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, a fancy local estate that the family donated to the National Park Service. It has about 25 miles of hiking trails. One morning, Marah and I strapped Bennett into his stroller and took off down Bass Lake Trail. It was supposed to be an easy 1.8-mile loop, but somehow we wandered off on another path and ended up slogging 3.5 miles through the forest. At one point, a couple of other hikers passing us said, “Wow, we’ve never seen a stroller on this path before!” The truth is strollers probably weren’t supposed to be on that path. I was just starting to wonder whether we’d ever make it back when we finally got to the end of the trail. It was quite an adventure! The chaos was worth it, though, because the next day we went back to the lake and saw a mother deer and her fawn at the water’s edge. The fawn was jumping around, splashing and playing just like Bennett had in the pool! We watched it for at least 10 minutes before the deer disappeared back into the woods. Other than those moments, the best part of the trip for me was visiting the piece of land my family owns in the area. When I was a kid, my mom and I discovered a creek on the property. It was memorable because I got stuck in a briar patch there. I hadn’t seen the creek in at least 20 years, but on our trip I was determined to find it. I used a stick as a makeshift machete and hacked through the weeds to reach the creek. Standing on the bank was so satisfying. Hopefully, in the future, Marah and I can build a
me himself. He must have gotten me in the pool at least a dozen times, but I was too nervous to leave the shallow end no matter how much he coaxed me. If my feet didn’t touch the bottom, I wasn’t having it!
Things didn’t improve until we went to visit my aunt and uncle for a long weekend. My older cousin was a lifeguard at the time, and my dad pulled him aside early in the trip. “If you teach Josh to swim by the end of the weekend, I’ll give you $100,” he said. My aunt and uncle had a pool, so of course the moment my dad left for Walmart my cousin dragged me out there. When Dad got back an hour later, I was swimming around the pool like a fish! My
cousin still says that was the quickest $100 he ever made.
That memory came back to me this summer when Marah, Bennett, and I made a trip to Blowing Rock. We stayed at a mountain resort that I’d visited as a kid, and Marah and I decided to take
cabin there and make sure Bennett grows up with as many fond memories of the mountains as I have. In the meantime, we’ll get him into some swim classes!

HOW READING FICTION CAN BENEFIT YOU Many CEOs and other successful individuals continually espouse the benefits of regular reading. Many times, leaders read self-help books to improve their leadership skills and become more successful. Self-Help Books Can’t Do It All

Josh and Marah’s visit to the North Carolina mountains this summer was ghost-free,
but if you believe local legends, there are plenty of supernatural creatures and ghosts haunting the area. In the spirit of Halloween, we’ve rounded up three chilling tales that might make you think twice about visiting our home state.
This is all well and good, but even the most successful people in the world could be missing out on the unique benefits that come specifically from reading fiction. But what are those benefits exactly? GREATER EMPATHY When a psychologist analyzed 86 functioning MRI (fMRI) studies, he found that the same parts of the brain that fire up when reading fictional stories also fire up when we’re seeking to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. That’s because when the characters in the book we’re reading are thinking or feeling a certain way, we tend to think or feel that way with them.
THE DEMON DOG OF VALLE CRUCIS Legend has it that the small mountain town of Valle Crucis, named for two streams that cross at its center, is haunted by a hellhound. The story originated with two young men who saw the beast while driving down Highway 194 around midnight. When they were passing an old church cemetery, a shadowy mass leapt from the graves and onto the road. It was a dog “as tall and as wide as a full-grown man” with glowing eyes, thick black fur, and huge yellow teeth. It stalked toward them. The friends slammed on the gas to escape the angry animal, but it chased them — gaining on their car and snapping at their bumper — all the way to the bridge over the two streams. The moment the friends’ tires passed the cross, the hellhound vanished. Legend has it that drivers today still catch sight of its glowing eyes and hulking form from the road.
LESS STRESS AND BETTER SLEEP When we read fiction specifically, we tend to disengage from the world — and that’s a good thing! Our brains can’t always be functioning at their peak capacity. We need breaks, or else we’ll stress ourselves out and negatively affect other areas of our lives. Stress tends to keep us from sound sleep, but reading fiction before bed engages the imagination, taking us away from the stresses of everyday life before we drift off. MORE COMFORT WITH UNCERTAINTY Even though many stories (particularly those portrayed in popular movies) have nice happy endings, most people would agree that life sometimes leaves things a little more open-ended. While this fact might stress out some people, researchers have discovered that fiction readers don’t need “cognitive closure” as much as nonfiction readers. GREATER HAPPINESS Even if none of the benefits of fiction interest you, everyone wants to find ways to make themselves

happy — and for many, that is reading fiction. According to one survey, 76% of participants said that reading makes them feel good and improves their lives. So, what are you waiting for? Dust off that novel you’ve been meaning to read and crack it open!

THE SIREN OF THE FRENCH BROAD The French Broad River runs near the city of Asheville, and it’s a popular spot for hikers who want to avoid the bustle of the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately, this path is home to a dangerous creature. Hikers who camp near the river are plagued by strange and alluring
Back in the 1980s, it was rare for kids, teens, or 20-somethings to experience neck and back pain. Spinal degeneration was a retiree’s problem. But that all changed when smartphones came on the scene. Today, nearly half of American adults spend 5–6 hours hunched over their phones daily — and this is wreaking havoc on our spines. “Tech neck” (characterized by cervical and shoulder pain, headaches, and thoracic hyperkyphosis) is epidemic even in kids. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this modern problem: the Posture Pump! The Posture Pump is a game-changing device that fits under a patient’s neck, then inflates to gently correct their cervical curve. This reshaping process compliments a manual adjustment. It relieves pain, stiffness, headaches, and fatigue by decompressing and hydrating compressed discs; decreasing disc bulging; and reducing forward head posture. It’s the perfect solution for pain caused by poor posture.
dreams about a beautiful woman with pale skin, dark hair, and dark eyes.
Each night she comes closer, and they wake to the sound of a beautiful voice singing in the distance. This continues until one night, the voice draws them to the river at twilight. There, they find the siren from their dreams rising from the water. She’s impossibly beautiful, but her presence is a trap: Touch her, and she’ll suck you into the river, never to return from your hike!

Posture Pump’s radial traction models set it apart from the linear traction devices on the market.
“Linear traction devices are placed at the base of the skull and they achieve anterior and posterior opening by pulling,” explains Posture Pro Senior Sales Officer Patti Clark. “With our radial traction model, we achieve that anterior and posterior opening by lifting and separating within the lordotic concavity.” Chiropractor Dr. Richard Graham first designed the Posture Pump in 1985 for his elderly patients. X-rays revealed remarkable changes in the curvature and alignment of their spines, so in 1994, he founded Posture Pro! Today the company sells a range of single and double air cell units that bring relief to patients of all ages — at home and in the clinic. “Posture pumps are one size fits all, so patients don’t need different units — the whole family can share one!” Patti says. “We’ve also installed automatic cutoff valves so there’s no need to worry about someone overinflating the pump.” Even Patti’s son,
who is just 5 years old, has mastered the Posture Pump to get neck pain relief after hours of looking at his tablet.

HOW ‘THE OUTSIDERS’ PROVIDES AN UNCONVENTIONAL ROAD MAP Tap Into a Successful CEO’s Mind
What if you could harness the knowledge and skill possessed by some of the world’s top CEOs — specifically eight of them? With investment expert and author William N. Thorndike Jr.’s “The Outsiders: Eight Unconventional CEOs and Their Radically Rational Blueprint for Success,” you can. After years of analyzing investments and the companies behind meteoric climbs on Wall Street, Thorndike has compiled stories, lessons, and tactics used by eight CEOs whose methods and beliefs don’t mirror those of other leaders — unconventional leaders like Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson or SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose companies’ growth speaks volumes for their methodology. Thorndike examines the successes of various business leaders, like pet food company Ralston Purina’s CEO or Berkshire Hathaway’s top leader, to discover what makes these companies so successful, even as they quietly grow. Through his storytelling and deep-dive into the mindsets of these CEOs, Thorndike offers readers various perspectives on a different way to amass success. Thorndike also illuminates how many of these top business minds were quietly outpacing their loud, celebrity-like counterparts.
For example, frugality is a major component of their
success, while most others view a singular metric as the biggest determining factor in their company’s long-term success. Together, many of these top CEOs often value the human elements of their business, attributing the people they have working for them as one of the most important parts of their company growth.
As you read through the various lessons and experiences of these CEOs, you find models emerging. Some of the tactics may work for you, while others prove that unconventional methods were never out of the box to begin with. All told, Thorndike’s “The Outsiders” is a reminder that sometimes the quiet ones make the most progress.
You can learn more about Thorndike’s book at Goodreads.com, or you can find it on Amazon.com or your favorite bookstore.
