“As someone who was born and raised in the North West, Clyde & Co was an instant attraction: a large city firm with a strong international and regional presence. Combined with a leading sector focus and a healthy work life balance, applying for a training contract was a given. Three years later – after successfully securing a training contract, completing my GDL, LPC and first year as a trainee – I have just started my third seat in Clyde & Co’s Employment team based in the Manchester office. Having spent my first year asking countless departmental questions when transitioning into a new area of law, to obtaining support when embracing the firm’s hybrid working model, Clyde & Co’s size and culture has meant that there has always been someone on hand to help me through a period of constant (but exciting!) change. I have learnt a tremendous amount from my supervisors, colleagues and the graduate recruitment team whose continued support and forward-thinking guidance has been unparalleled, and I look forward to an exciting year ahead!”
“My training contract at Clyde & Co offered a broad learning experience which has prepared me for life beyond qualification. The firm invested in my professional development through a combination of excellent training, high quality supervision and exciting opportunities. For example, I undertook a six-month client secondment which rapidly developed my commercial awareness. Clyde & Co’s supportive and inclusive culture encouraged me to express my ideas and personality throughout my training contract. Indeed, the firm’s nurturing environment meant that I always felt comfortable asking questions to my team and I continuously learnt a great deal from my peers. I count myself lucky to be joining a fantastic team upon qualification and I am looking forward to the big learning curve over the next few months!”
“I am a second year trainee currently sitting in the Corporate / Commercial team, which is split between our London and Guildford offices. Clyde & Co is a full-service law firm which is great because it has meant that I have had exposure to both contentious and transactional work during my training contract with my first seat in Specialty Insurance and my second in Real Estate. Highlights of my training contract so far include participating in two high-value, international arbitration hearings where we acted for the insurers and independently handling small property transactions where I had direct client contact.”
“The application process for the Vacation Scheme consisted of a written application and Assessment Centre, which involved group, written and discussion exercises as well as an interview. The day ran very smoothly, and the firm really put us at ease, both before and during the day. The Vacation Scheme definitely exceeded expectations. People across all levels and departments were incredibly generous with their time and spoke with such genuine affection for the firm. I was even able to attend virtual hearings and pre-trial client conferences. I am really excited to begin my training contract with Clyde & Co next year. I am about to start the LPC at the University of Law, and am looking forward to a course which is more tailored to Clyde & Co’s practice areas. The Early Careers team is always on hand for support and runs events to keep us connected with the firm.”

Our focus areas are: Young Lives; Equality before the Law; and Sustainability and Climate Change. We encourage our legal professionals to say YES to one of our many pro bono opportunities!
SUMMARY OF THE THREE PILLARS Y:
E :
S :
Dealing with legal issues relating to our health, our home or our family can be stressful and destabilising. We run pro bono projects that empower young people and their families through pro bono advice so they do not have to navigate the legal system and their legal issues alone.
It is fundamental tenet of our legal system that all people must be equally protected by the law, without discrimination. Our pro bono practice seeks to uphold this principle and to provide legal assistance to those who would otherwise be unable to access justice.
Our pro bono work aims to complement the firm’s Climate Change Risk Practice. Climate Change is a defining issue of our time and one we cannot ignore. It is having catastrophic effects on our environment and, as lawyers, we can help to build a better future by using our legal skills and knowledge to tackle this issue and promote sustainability. We are proud of our trainee-led Climate Change Group which leads the charge on our climate- related pro bono projects.

KIND UK There are an estimated 120,000 undocumented children in the UK vulnerable to poverty, social exclusion and exploitation. As they transition into adulthood without secure immigration status, they can find themselves prevented from accessing medical care, higher education, employment and justice. Kids In Need of Defense (KIND) UK runs a national project that helps undocumented children living in the UK to secure British citizenship or permission to reside in the UK. A dedicated KIND UK lawyer trains and supports Clyde & Co’s pro bono volunteers to handle a citizenship / immigration case from start to finish. Trainees work with qualified lawyers at the firm on all aspects of the process, from conducting remote interviews with families to obtaining essential background information, to drafting letters of advice and application forms. KIND UK provides an excellent opportunity for Trainees to work alongside like-minded lawyers whilst learning about immigration law.
ZUESS PROJECT The Zambrano EUSS Project (ZEUSS Project), was set-up.to assist the migrant charity Praxis to complete as many EUSS* applications for Zambrano Carers** as possible before the 30 June 2021 application deadline. Each Clyde & Co Trainee volunteer was partnered with a volunteer lawyer from the firm and they were trained and supervised by the Praxis legal team to prepare applications on behalf of the clients. In addition to helping individuals who otherwise would not get the legal advice they need, this kind of project is a great opportunity for Trainees to network with lawyers from across Clyde & Co, to develop their drafting and interviewing skills and to learn how the legal community can respond to unforeseen and immediate need for legal advice. In fact, due to its innovation and impact, the ZEUSS Project has now been shortlisted for the Law Society’s ‘Excellence in Pro Bono’ Award 2021. Details can be found here.
UNPAID WAGES CLINIC To help individuals with their day- to-day personal legal queries, we run and participate in various pro bono legal clinics. These support the local community either by offering one- off “on the day” appointments or by supporting individuals throughout their case. The Unpaid Wages Project is a project run by LawWorks for pro bono volunteers to represent individuals who have not been properly paid by their employers. With appropriate guidance and support from specialist employment lawyers, Trainees are responsible for managing their own cases and represent the client from the beginning to the end of the case. This includes conducting interviews with clients, preparing claim forms and supporting documents, corresponding with other parties’ legal representatives and representing clients in the Employment Tribunal.
THE CLIMATE CHANGE GROUP Clyde & Co’s Climate Change Group (CCG) is a self-led group of Trainees that identifies and runs climate related learning, business development and pro bono initiatives. One of the pro bono initiatives supported by the CCG is The [Chancery Lane] Project (TCLP). TCLP is a collaborative effort of lawyers from around the world to develop new contractual clauses to help fight climate change and reach net zero by 2050. Through this project and the CCG, Trainees can develop their skills while using the law to deliver climate solutions. There are opportunities for Trainees to organise, facilitate and take part in TCLP’s hackathons, where legal professionals come together to discuss and draft new climate-conscious contractual provisions. Those contractual provisions are then peer reviewed and published for general use so that lawyers can include them in precedent documents and contracts, ultimately supporting their clients to achieve their climate goals.
* The “EU Settlement Scheme” (EUSS) was set up to process the applications of European Union citizens living in the UK to allow them to remain in the UK after Brexit on 21 January. ** “Zambrano carers” are non-EU sole parents/carers of British children.
