and Statistics, produced 77 scholarly articles and revamped its website, allowing for simpler and more eye-pleasing navigation. But we did not stop there. The College of Business also took flight with its two video series titled Vantage Point and Day In The Life. The former serves as a learning venue while the latter serves as a valuable career-guiding tool for our students. As an organization, the College of Business embraces change and thrives on new challenges. The college’s entrepreneurial spirit can be seen in its research partnership with Skytra that is studying the potential of producing risk management tools for the aviation industry. I am proud to say that this is also a mindset that we pass on to all our students. It goes without saying that these accomplishments would not be possible without our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the college. I invite you to look through our 2021 highlights in the pages that follow. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear friends of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Worldwide College of Business, Warm greetings to you all. As we sign off the 2021 chapter and welcome 2022, we as a college have much to be proud of, particularly given the challenges related to COVID-19. The faculty and administration of the College of Business, as well as the university, have done a superb job of navigating our students through these challenging times. And of course, I am immensely proud of our students for continuing to excel and continuing to move along their respective degree pathways. This past year has seen us successfully close out our strategic plan for 2018-2021 and establish new goals for the College of Business over the next five years. During this year, the college achieved some very important milestones, including the launch of three new degree programs coined Stackables: Master of Business Administration in Aviation (MBAA), Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) and Master of Science in Management (MSM). The college also won a major grant from the Bureau of Transportation

Working Together Thanks in part to a new partnership with Skytra, an Airbus subsidiary, the Worldwide College of Business is building a reputation in the key area of financial risk management while allowing students to learn skills that will be in constant demand across a range of global industries. “Financial risk management is a unique, STEM-based discipline that is crucial not only for the aviation industry, but for nearly any field, which will give students a skill that is transferable,” said Dr. Maneesh Sharma, Dean of the Worldwide College of Business. As Skytra’s preferred academic partner, Embry-Riddle has conducted research in areas that hold the potential to transform the travel industry. One such study by Embry-Riddle professors Dr. Maneesh Sharma, Dr. Sunder Raghavan, Dr. Alfonso Canella and Dr. Ron Mau found that one of Skytra’s tools, the Trans-Atlantic (TA) index, offered revenue protection close to 90%, even after the pandemic collapsed yields. This groundbreaking ability to hedge revenue has profound implications for the aviation industry and the entire tourism industry. Industry partnerships like Skytra further advance Embry-Riddle’s longstanding reputation as an innovator and thought leader when it comes to business innovation. “The focus on risk management distinguishes us from other business schools, and also elevates the overall Embry-Riddle brand in business education,” Dr. Sharma said.

In 2021, we continued to see growing demand for skilled professionals and leaders who can manage the efficient and effective use of scarce resources, operate in an atmosphere of heightened global competition and, most notably, respond to the call to preserve our world’s fragile ecosystem amid the pandemic. The College of Business currently offers 16 degree programs designed to introduce students to modern management concepts, leadership principles, communication skills and the tools necessary to thrive in business today.

Re-Engineering Graduate Learning The Worldwide College of Business was excited to launch a redesigned curriculum for three of its graduate degree programs in August 2021. The enhanced MBA in Aviation, M.S. in Engineering Management and M.S. in Management programs provide students with a high-reliability organizations (HRO) foundation, a degree-specific core and a resume-boosting certificate of their choice. HRO concepts, such as risk management and risk mitigation, are woven throughout the program,

Why is your research important? What are the possible real-world applications? Understanding the forces, be they tangible or invisible, that shape communities around us, sustain households, result in public policy and are used as strategic initiatives for entire communities is important. Remittances are a global phenomenon that not only are found to finance development, but also impact quality of life and can be connected to the preservation of cultural traditions. Our research starts at the very basic level of introducing the word — remittances — into general use and then making the human connection to this global occurrence. What are the next steps with your research? We plan to continue this line of academic inquiry through more direct involvements and on-the- ground research endeavors. It is our hope that we can further delve into the strategies utilized by the household sector and offer further strength to the connection between remittances and cultural traditions. Additionally, through connections with national governments and private money transfer institutions, I plan to delve deeper into the global economic impacts of remittances with a focus on private money transfers as soft power.

preparing students to succeed in the high-risk and complex environments of today’s organizations. With flexible delivery options, including a 100% online curriculum, students can now pursue a program that meets their individual goals while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Did you know that the amount of remittances sent back by migrants is three times the size of international development aid? In 2019, annual remittance flow to low-

and middle-income countries reached over USD $550 billion — which means remittance flow is larger than foreign direct investment. Dr. Merritt’s remittance research seeks to understand the role that remittances play in international development, from the individual to the country and globe. How did you get interested in studying the topic of remittances? While I was working toward my Ph.D. in Strategy, circa 2014, I began to become more interested in diaspora communities. I remember sitting in a doctoral-level discussion course and realizing that my previous work with Federally Qualified Health Clinics and the import company I owned at the time all had connections to migrants, migration and being connected to one’s country of origin while physically living in another country. While the U.S. is my home, I love to travel and become immersed in different cultures. How have you explored remittance research since joining the College of Business in 2018? We presented our first scholarly research in 2016, published a few subsequent articles, and then in August 2020 our first book, Remittances and International Development , was released. Since the publication, my co-author (Dr. Sabith Khan) and I have been invited to several book talks and lectures to disseminate our research findings.

“The HRO theme in our program is really unique and distinct. In today’s world, every organization can benefit from a better understanding of systemic risk and how it can impact an organization moving forward. Most schools and programs typically do not have a unifying theme across their graduate degrees.”

“Remittances are typically transfers from a well-meaning individual or family member to another individual or household. They are targeted to meet specific needs of the recipients.”

that aviation is a passion for Zach Ungerleider. Having graduated in 2014 with a B.S. in Aviation Business Administration, Ungerleider is now living his childhood dream of working in the aviation industry. While working on his undergraduate coursework, he also earned his Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Maintenance Certificate and completed flight training, achieving an Instrument Rating. With an initial start as an A&P mechanic and Director of Maintenance, his career took a turn toward sales while at Textron Aviation. Now the MSP Sales Manager at Honeywell Aerospace, his career is on an upward trajectory. “My education at Embry-Riddle has served me well,” Ungerleider said. The aviation business curriculum prepared him to thrive in sales and communicate with buyers. “I encourage those who are on a similar path.” With this success, he now looks forward to giving back. Ungerleider, along with his wife who is also an Embry-Riddle alumna, inspires youth to learn more about aviation. His role as a business aviation mentor to young professionals, as well as his own personal success, landed him on the National Business Aviation Association’s 40 Under 40 list in 2018. Ungerleider is currently enrolled in the Master of Business Administration in Aviation (MBAA) program at Embry-Riddle. He aspires to advance into leadership and utilize his “ability to effect change” within the aviation industry.

in Aviation Business Administration and a minor in Global Business, obtaining her first set of “eagle wings” when she graduated in 2019. Before Rachel graduated, she was offered candidacy in one of Boeing’s highly competitive rotation programs, the Business Career Foundation Program (BCFP). Boeing selects top candidates from universities across the United States for this two-year program. The aim of the BCFP is to accelerate the development of dynamic and knowledgeable business leaders by providing challenging, fast-paced learning experiences through six, four-month rotations (i.e. business operations, sales and marketing, accounting, contracts and estimating/pricing). When Rachel decided to continue her education and seek out a graduate program, the decision was simple: “I had such an amazing experience at Embry-Riddle during my undergrad and the faculty really showed that they care about the students.” Rachel reviewed program offerings through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Worldwide and ultimately selected the Master of Science in Management (MSM). “I like that I have the opportunity to work with people from around the world,” Stanley said. She specifically chose the MSM program with a specialization in project management to continue her education in this field. The flexibility of the online program allows Rachel to continue her employment at Boeing while she obtains her master’s degree. The cross-functional BCFP experience also provides Rachel with the perfect opportunity to apply her graduate study in a real-world setting. Rachel aspires to excel as a leader in the aerospace industry. A lifelong learner, she is making the most of her education journey and looks forward to walking across the Embry-Riddle graduation stage once again!
