We Can Help You Prepare for and Recover From Your Surgery

Are you an athlete facing an upcoming surgical procedure? If so, you probably have a long list of to-do’s and things to prepare before your operation. One important thing to add to that list is scheduling a consultation with a physiotherapist — before and after your surgery! Physiotherapy at COMPhysio has proven time and time again to effectively help with preparing a person’s body for surgical correction, as well as enhancing the recovery process. A physiotherapist’s touch can make it possible for a person to get their full strength back as quickly as possible following a surgical procedure. We know your sport is important to you, and we want to help you get back on the f ield or court! If you’re facing a surgical procedure, contact our off ice today to learn more about our therapy programs, how our services can benef it you before surgery, and speed up your recovery process after your operation! What is pre-op therapy? Pre-operative therapy has been demonstrated to be just as valuable as post-operative physiotherapy. To put it simply, pre-op therapy or “prehab” is preventative rehabilitation. The Arthritis Foundation states “Studies show that knee and hip replacement surgery patients who had participated in water- and land-based strength training, aerobic and flexibility exercises for six weeks before their surgeries reduced their odds of needing inpatient rehabilitation by up to 73 percent. Pre-hab stabilizes your pain levels before surgery and gets you back on your feet faster after surgery.” Many athletes go through physiotherapy after surgery to help them regain strength, balance, range of motion and overall wellness following a major health challenge. By contrast, prehab is a form of training that occurs in anticipation of such a challenge! It generally includes physiotherapy exercises aimed at optimizing your functional capabilities. Once you’ve completed that grueling athletic competition or surgical procedure, your pre-improved body will f ind it that much easier to respond to any necessary rehabilitation efforts, helping you get back on your

feet and back to your daily life in record time. Dur ing preoperat i ve phys iotherapy, the physiotherapist will work with you to improve strength and functionality in the areas immediately surrounding the targeted injury site. This process can help immensely with the recovery process following surgical care. Pre-surgical rehab with physiotherapy often incorporates: • Hot and cold therapy • Massage • Stretching and mobility training • Muscle training • Endurance training Your COMPhysio therapist may prescribe numerous exercises and stretches for you to perform at home as well to ensure that your operation can go as smoothly as possible. If at any time you feel uncomfortable performing an exercise, let your therapist know! They are experts at helping you f igure out ways to complete these exercises without pain and will be able to come up with a solution that benef its your situation the most. The ultimate goal is to see you up and on your feet quicker after your surgery! Contact COMPhysio today: We understand that you may be worried about your recovery period after surgery, and that’s why we’re here! Our therapists can support and guide you both before and after surgery to ensure that you have the smoothest return to your normal activities! Physiotherapy is a safe, healthy, and effective way to prepare your body for surgery and help you recover after. If you have a surgical procedure on the books, contact our clinic today to set up an appointment with one of our skilled physiotherapists! https: //www.arthritis.org/health-wellness/treatment/joint- surgery/preplanning/pre-hab-for-surgery

PATIENT SUCCESS STORIES

I have been going to Concept of Movement/ COMphysio now for the past 6 months for a variety of ailments and could not be happier. The team is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and a pleasure to work with. Their coordinated approach makes treatment (f rom physio, to training and massage) more streamlined and eff icient while giving me the best possible treatment plan and outcomes. Not only have my injuries been addressed, but I am stronger and feel healthier now than I have in years. Whether you are recovering f rom an injury or looking to improve any aspect of your physical health I would highly recommend giving them a visit! - D.S. Walking in the door at Concept of Movement, is like walking into a family who cares about you and how you feel. The facility is warm and welcoming. My physiotherapist knows her stuff and has worked with me for 2+ years. She is the reason I keep coming back! She has helped me build my core strength after pregnancy, and helped recover f rom hip and knee pain. I love my visits to the clinic and their virtual appointments accommodate your busy schedule. Highly recommend Concept of Movement! - P.R.

Big news: say hello, to our new name! We are launching a new name and logo, and as we start to refresh our look, we are here to explain why we decided to evolve it. Our first logo was created before the company launched back in 2011. It’s distinctive, strong, and the runningman resembles someone chasing after their goals. We love that about our logo, but what we have struggled with is our name, COMphysio Physiotherapy and Performance Therapy. It is really long and easy to get wrong. Our incredible community of patients coined the acronym COM over the years and we resonate with it and love it... so why not make it official!

Staff Spotlight

Dustin Ng Physiotherapist

Dustin obtained his Master of Science i n Phy s i o t he r apy at the University of Toronto, following his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology f rom York University. Dustin has

experience working with children, adults and the elderly with a variety of goals ranging f rom rehabilitation to optimising high performance. Exercise has taken different forms through Dustin’s life starting with swimming, then jiu jitsu and eventually landing him in the gym performing strength training. Dustin’s time as a swimmer later turned into a part time job as a lifeguard, swim instructor and dive instructor. Nowadays is it more common to see Dustin on a bike or a pair of skis depending on the time of year.

Over the next few months, you’ll see all of the visuals around COMphysio aligning with this new direction. It’s still us. We’re still Concept of Movement, but way easier to say, more consistent, and - we hope - more instantly recognizable.

Love, the team @COMphysio

AT-HOME EXERCISE Try this exercise to improve posture.

HAVE YOU REACHED YOUR ANNUAL INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE? An insurance deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before your insurance company pays for your medical services. If your deductible is met, your physiotherapy may not cost you anything. Patients with family plans or those who have hadmajor surgeries or have a chronic illness are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on their out-of-pocket expenses. This means that the cost of physiotherapy could be minimal or completely covered by the patient’s insurance plan. If you are close to or have met your insurance deductible for the year, then now is the time to come in for physiotherapy! Are you feeling aches and pains? Need to work on your core? Let us help you get a head start for 2022.
