The Best Resources for Productivity and Well-Being in 2019

W e’re entering the second month of the new year, and I have an important question for you: What have you accomplished? Are you still working toward your goals and New Year’s resolutions? It’s okay if the answer is no. I’m not here to judge you for falling behind or letting life carry you for a while. I am here to help you beat that slump. This month, I want to share with you the best resource I discovered in 2018. It created the next level of my productivity and wellbeing, and I know it can do the same for you. Building FromRock Bottom First, I want to say that I know what it’s like to feel unproductive. I know what happens when you let yourself be pulled around by the tides of life. In the summer of 1984, I was 24 years old and at rock bottom. I wasn’t following God, I wasn’t close to my own family, I was working 80 hours a week for a restaurant chain, and I was involved in things I shouldn’t have been involved in. It wasn’t a good place to be, but I didn’t know how to get out. Thankfully, I was introduced to the world of personal development and self-improvement. One of the first self-improvement books I read was “The University of Success” by Og Mandino. It turned my life around at the point when I needed it the most. I moved back to North Carolina, lived with my grandparents for three months, and prayed to God every day that He would give me a second chance. My prayers were answered, and I’ve spent the rest of my life vowing to never get swept up by the tide again. I read many other self-improvement books that summer, and countless more in the following years, but “University of Success” remains one of my favorites. No other book or system made me feel as motivated or inspired as I did when reading Mandino’s book and following the action steps at the end of each chapter. At least, not until I discovered the SELF Journal last year. MoreThan a Journal I discovered this amazing resource a few weeks before the end of 2018, and I wish I’d found it much sooner. The system is not just a journal. It’s a

powerful yet simple daily planner that incorporates all the aspects of what makes us successful. For decades, I have studied the principles of how to get to the next level and be more productive, effective,

and balanced in life. I’ve continuously looked for ways to be successful in business while still maintaining strong, healthy relationships with friends, family, and God. The SELF Journal takes all the lessons and strategies I’ve learned over the years and combines them into one system. It’s a planner and a journal compiled into one. The SELF Journal focuses on 13 weeks at a time and divides these weeks into three distinct daily, weekly, and monthly sections. Everything you do in each section is guided by your Big Goal — the thing you want to achieve at the end of the 13 weeks. This isn’t a system focused solely on helping you lose weight or advance your business. There are elements built into the SELF Journal that will help you practice gratitude, gain a better understanding of yourself, and become a well-balanced person. A Better Daily Routine There are so many things I love about the SELF Journal. For example, when you write down your Big Goal, you sign a contract with yourself, vowing to take action to achieve that goal. There’s power in putting ink on paper. A mentor of mine told me once, “Jay, cut the gab and get on the pad.” One of my favorite parts of this system is how it structures the daily sections. control of my day. Just beneath my schedule is a line that reads “This morning I am grateful for …” and space for me to write three things. On one particular day, I wrote: 1. I am grateful for my good night sleep to awake at 6 a.m. 2. I am grateful that I am able to back into God’s comfort anytime I wish. 3. I am grateful to take time alone at the coffee shop today. At the top of the next page there’s a section to write my goal. This doubles as a daily affirmation when I write my big goal again and the steps I will take to achieve that goal. Just below is the “Today’s Targets” section. This is a to-do list of what I need to accomplish that day. Then I end my morning by reading an inspirational quote. One of my favorite quotes in the SELF Journal came from Les Brown: “Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else.” Evenings At the end of the day, I return to the SELF Journal again. Waiting for me are three more sections. The first two are Lessons Learned — where I reflect on what went well about the day and what could have gone better — and the Brag Zone — where I record my wins. Then I end the day like I started it, by writing down three things I am grateful for. The emphasis on gratitude is what I like most about the SELF Journal. I am convinced, and have been for a decade, that making a point to express your gratitude focuses your outlook on the day. Just recently, I read about a study that found people who express gratitude before going to bed fall asleep faster, stay sleep longer, and enjoy more restful sleep. Practicing gratitude helps us better remember our blessings and improves our overall well-being. Be More Productive in 2019 This barely scratches the surface of what makes the SELF Journal so awesome. I’ve tried a lot of journals and systems over the years, but this one provides a whole new sense of well-being and control over your day. It’s not good to drift around without purpose and let the tides take you where they want to. Productivity is only possible when you are in control of yourself and your time by planning and scheduling your day.
