The forthcomingHamad binKhalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, which has the theme, The Environment and Ecology in Islamic Art and Culture, will include presentations on subjects from Climate Justice, the Rights of Nature, Tanzania’s First Eco-Mosque, and The Hidden History of Urban ‘Wetlands’ inBaghdad, to name but a few. It will take place on November 8 to 15, 2021. The environment is a recurring theme in the works and research of our students, faculty and alumni. AYAH, the graduating thesis by Class of 2021 Interior Design graduateMaryam AlKuwari, addresses the near extinction of bees, while our Fashion Design department is increasing its emphasis on sustainability. Art and design provide benefits to the commu- nity, from healthcare to the environment and also in public art.Works by our students, faculty, alumni and staff can be found at indoor and, noticeably, outdoor spaces throughout Qatar, such as at Crescent Park in Lusail, 5/6 Park in Doha, and Al Firdous Street, in Mushaireb. As we move towards the middle of our third decade in Qatar, we do so with an array of academic programs and initiatives for commu- nity engagement that have been refreshed by the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope you enjoy our capture of this exceptional year through Context 2021 and thank you as always for your support and continued interest in VCUarts Qatar.

Thank you for your interest in Context 2021.

It has been a year of achievements, despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been a year in which creativity has again thrived in adversity, as you will see in the following pages. The past year has also shown how established we have become in the community. The growing importance of art and design in healthcare was again evident in the 2020 to 2021 academic year as our students, faculty and alumni worked on projects ranging fromcoremessaging for health promotionwithQatar’sMinistry of PublicHealth, to exploring the links between technology and mental well-being. We also acknowledge that the crisis affecting the health of our environment is a challenge that will remain with us long after the pandemic has become a distant memory.

الفن والتصميم في الرعاية الصحية - أكثر مما تراه العين

Artists, designers, and healthcare practi- tioners share a few things in common – they all work in fields that require high levels of emotional investment, and where empa- thy, not sympathy, drives innovation and creativity. It is therefore hardly surprising that the three professions would intersect, with healthcare practitioners often turn- ing to artists and designers for solutions. Skim through the healthcare innovations that emerged over the last century, and you’ll notice how this collaboration has ex- panded from the more traditional and visible applications of design in product develop- ment and enhancement – for example, so- lar-powered sterilizers and mobility equip- ment, endoscopes and prosthetic limbs, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and state-of-the-art hearing equipment – to include broader applications such as design thinking to enhance awareness, public outreach, patient experience, and mental well-being, and even to address is- sues related to inclusivity and disability. VCUarts Qatar has always had this broaden- ing scope in sight. Over the last two decades its students, alumni, and faculty have cre- atively and innovatively addressed issues that influence healthcare at micro and macro lev- els, and in the process attempted to answer the question – how can creatives contribute towards healthcare?

A HAND IN PUBLIC HEALTH A stellar example of the relevance of design in healthcare, and of VCUarts Qatar’s solution-cen- tered curricula, is a pioneering collaboration between Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and VCUarts Qatar. It started with the MoPH initially approaching VCUarts Qatar in 2019 with a specific need. They wanted to use visual communication to help disseminate the core message of health promotion and illness prevention to Qatar’s resident population, which is comprised of over 90 nationalities. Peter Martin, Assistant Professor, Graphic Design, andByradYyelland, Assistant Professor, Liberal Arts &Sciences, held initial discussions with the MoPH, and incorporated the initiative into a multiversity (multi-university) course which they co-teach, along with contributions fromotherEducationCity andQatarFoundation entities. They were joined by Astrid Kensinger when she assumed the role ofChair of theGraphic

Design department at the start of the new academic year in 2020. Margarita Zuniga, the University’s CommunityRelations Coordinator, synchronized the processes between VCUarts Qatar and the MoPH by linking the right talent to the right roles and responsibilities as they emerged. During the first phase, the Director of Public Health, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani gave a presentation to faculty and students. In the second phase, an open call to all Graphic Design students led to a workshop where the students, and two Graphic Design alumni CatherineFeChiuco andHaneenAlsharif – who had been invited to mentor and co-lead alongside the Chair of Graphic Design – distilled the complexity of perspectives and ideas which the students had put forward into keywords and core concepts that were in turnmolded into a narrative.

Two Class of 2021 Graphic Design students, Aisha Al-Abdallah and Azza Alawad, then presented their respective pitch to Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as to VCUarts Qatar’s Dean Amir Berbi ć , and the Director of Strategic Engagement, Lejla Nikši ć. The collaboration led to Alawad, along with Class of 2021 Graphic Design student Cut Izza Alyssa, being offered internships at the MoPH headquarters. “There is more to design than branding and aesthetically pleasing visuals; there are design- thinking and strategizing elements as well,” Alyssa said. “For instance, during the internship, we did a considerable amount of research to understand cultural habits prevalent in Qatar; we applied our critical thinking skills to develop varied approaches in dissem- inating information about COVID-19 precautions to a multinational population. It was an incredible opportunity to apply what we'd learned in our classes in real-life settings – and to get a ringside view of the considerable effort that goes into safeguarding the health of a population.”

During the internship, bothAlawad andAlyssa benefitted from the departmental rotations and field trips that gave them an understanding of the complexity of modern health care, and how best to use design to build awareness and convey specific messages. “Our field trips gave us a chance to talk to teams conducting COVID-19 research, and gain insight into the systematic thinking required to be able to communicate effec- tively; we saw, from a different perspec- tive, how design influences human behavior and change in the real world,” Alawad said. “The experience taught us so much. During our time at theMinistry, for instance, wewere given a certain extent of freedomto organize our tasks, stretch our minds, make decisions, and create our own outcomes. Going forward, we’ve decided to expand and share our experiences; to culti- vate a community of young designers and advo- cates who are passionate about social change and can actively contribute to such initiatives.”

PROMOTING MENTALWELL-BEING Understanding the psychology of the target audience is part of a designer’s gambit. It is also a skill that, by default, helps designers explore an area that has consistently made news recently– mental well-being. At VCUarts Qatar, students have explored issues as varied as the link be- tween technology and mental well-being, and the benefits of play on adults and children.

Designs to counter the detrimental effects of digital overuse was the subject of investiga- tion for Class of 2019 MFA in Design graduate Mohammad Jawad. “The intoxicating allure of social media has led to a constant craving for gratification and pleasure,” Jawad said. “This promptedme to askmyself, ‘If designers likemyself are responsible for creating such devices and user interfaces, why can’t we design products that help users disconnect from their digital devices, and reconnect with them- selves, and their environment? ’” Jawad’s realization during his time as an MFA student led him to explore the topic of art and medicine. He created an exhibition installation titled ‘Virtual toReal’ during his undergraduate studies and also designed a series of wearable devices that drives home the need to curb digital dependency. One of these products is ‘Hypo Connect’, a small mesh-like finger cover that allows the user to bemore present and focused by quelling the urge to constantly swipe a phone screen.

Another one is ‘Virtual Bubble’ awearable device – much like a lightweight helmet – with a collaps- ible structure. The piece, inspired by the arma- dillo, covers one’s facewhen you’re engrossed in a phone conversation, and prevents others from interacting with you as they normally would. The device is symbolic of the psychological and social barriers that digital dependency creates in relationships.

Class of 2021MFA inDesign student Yeon Geong Hwang chose to examine the need for idleness, and play, to boost human creativity and productivity. “Have you ever wondered why there are very few toys and games for people above the age of 12, in toy shops and stores?” asked Hwang. “Though it is valid that many adults may discover different ways of playing, we cannot deny that the gap of toys at our age is symbolic – it is a direct reflection of our tendency to assume that as adults, we need to be working all the time, and we ignore the value of idleness in our lives.” Citing evidence-based research in support of her argument, Hwang explained how our brains need a balance of purpose, and lack of purpose – the latter which happens when our minds are idle or when we play.

“When a person enters the ‘un-focus’ state of mind, the Default-ModeNetwork (DMN) in the brain is activated,” she explained. “This state is triggered when we enter daydream mode and drift off into thought. In other words, when you turn the ‘focus’ function of the brain off, theDMN will trigger the brain to retrieve memories and link ideas, which significantly boosts creativity. This explains why we get good ideas at random moments in our lives, such as in the shower.” Hwang’s thesis includes a short film that is crafted around an area with which we can identify – our workstations. The film’s narra- tive uses the familiarity of day-to-day objects in and around our work desk to trigger thought on the meaning of continuous work.

The notion of play as an effective tool for self-ex- pression, formaintainingmental well-being, and as therapy, is gaining ground. And it is one that prompted Amna Sana, Hwang’s fellow Class of 2021 MFA in Design graduate, to investigate play therapy in the context of the emotional challenges faced by young Third Culture Kids (TCKs). “There may be positive aspects to life as a Third CultureKid, such as experiencing life in a land or culture that is different fromtheir parents’,” said Sana. “However, as their surroundings and social circles are often changing, TCKs can encounter intense feelings of loss compared to that of an average person. Such feelings can be accompa- nied by a sense of grief, shifting perceptions of one’s true culture, and an underlying confusion of identity.” Sana pointed out how children, or young TCKs are not old enough to understand and process the trauma they experience, let alone talk about it.

For them, play therapy is often used as amethod to alleviate emotional and/or physical trauma by allowing them autonomy in play. Through interviews with therapists, Sana discovered that children’s mental health issues are rarely acknowledged as a legitimate problem, in the region – a concern given that those less than 15 years of age are part of the 1.85 million expatriates in Qatar. Sana’s thesis addresses the emotional hurdles facing TCKs through a series of interactive objects designed to reflect emotional expres- sion through movement. Developed for use in a therapeutic playroom, the objects facilitate communications between TCKs and therapists.

VCUarts Qatar’s stance in viewing inclu- sivity as an essential component of human interaction, and humanity, stands out across the many investigations and initiatives in healthcare conducted by its community of students, alumni, and faculty members. Thehomelessandtheirmentalwell-being,was the topic explored by Aia Zaina, an Interior Design Class of 2021 student. As part of her investiga- tions, Zaina studied existingmodels of dwellings for thehomeless inCanada, theUS, andAustralia, and conducted in-depth interviews with those directly involvedwith the homeless inAustralia. “I had detailed – and often frank – discussions withmanagers and social workers involvedwith homeless shelters or communities inAustralia,” Zaina said. “A common shared response from all of themwas the need to cater to not only the physical, but also the psychological wellbeing of the homeless – which most dwellings lacked.” Zaina’s research findings coincided with a 2020 UN report estimating that there are 1.6 billion people worldwide who live in inadequate housing conditions, with about 15 million forcefully evicted every year. In her research – which was accepted for, and presented at, theEnvironment DesignResearch AssociationEDRA52 conference held inDetroit, US, in May 2021 – Zaina put forward a design

that promotes inclusion, fosters identity and individuality, allows occupants to bondwith place, nature, context, and people, and helps them live with a greater sense of purpose and give back to society. VCUarts Qatar’s belief in the ability of art and design to foster inclusivity was also evident in a first-of-its-kind program that saw three of its alumni – Zenab Al-Khayat, Ayah Elnour, and SalmaAwad – hold supervised onlineworkshops for thosewithDown Syndrome, drawn from the Qatar chapter of Best Buddies International, in November 2020.

Sustainability

Relevant sustainability methods that would help when designing the interior proposed center would be designing the windows tomaximize daylight; and planning the interior to enhance daylight and natural air flow distribution, such as show in the diagram above. Another method utilized that is effective for the proposed center is cellulose that is blown into the building’s envelope providing insulation, & the white stucco on the exterior reflects light. To alleviate solar gain, outdoor lounges, rooftops & gardens provide such benefits. 81 A solar panel on the roof would also help create energy for hot water. These passive strategies are energy efficent & cost conscious.

The sessions were part of a pilot program jointly conducted by volunteers fromQatar Foundation partner universities VCUarts Qatar and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Sidra Medicine, the Qatar chapter of Best Buddies International, and ATIC (Art Therapy International Center) Psychological and Counselling Center in Dubai, which was founded, and is run by, VCUarts Qatar alumna Sara Powell. During the workshops – which were overseen by programvolunteers fromthe aforementioned participating entities – Al-Khayat, Elnour, and Awad guided the teenagers as they created watercolor paintings, collages, prints, and 3D artwork, usingmaterials that were delivered to the students’ homes specifically for the purpose, by a local art supplier. Zaina’s research into homelessness, and the afore- saidworkshops for those withDown Syndrome, came close on the heels of VCUarts Qatar taking the step to launch a British Association of Art Therapists-accredited course inArt Therapy in 2020. Currently in its second year, participants in the course explore art therapy as a mental health profession, alongside partaking in expe- riential workshops across a variety of topics - for example, in support of children, adults, medical settings, schools, and trauma, to name but a few.

WHY HEALTHCARE NEEDS DESIGN Most healthcare providers the world over have beenwidening their foci frombeing predominantly treatment-driven, to offer holistic services in the communities they cater to. In this regard, private and government stakeholders in the healthcare sector have, of late, been investing a considerable amount of time, energy and resources to ensure that end-users are satisfiedwith not just one, but all aspects of the healthcare services they avail. This has led to healthcare becoming multi-disciplinary, with healthcare providers partneringwith creatives to streamline communication and processes, and enhance accessibility and inclusion. In the context of this broadening scope, artists and designers at VCUarts Qatar are stepping forward to apply their skills in problem-solving, critical anal- ysis, design thinking, research, and visual commu- nication, across various spheres of healthcare such as public health, personal well-being, and user expe- rience. Through individual projects and communi- ty-led initiatives, they have been consistently engaging with, and assisting, various participants in the healthcare sector such as frontline workers, researchers, and policymakers, to augment services within and beyondQatar. And, in doing so, they have come to epitomize VCUarts Qatar’s commitment tocreativelyandinnovativelyrespondtotheneedsof the wider community, with foresight and sensitivity.

Research at VCUarts Qatar spans multiple disciplines and areas of interest, traversing design, art, humanities, and the sciences. The University’s faculty-led Research Labs delve into a diverse spectrum of research en- gagements across areas of material studies, visual cultures, cultural heritage and sustain- ability, emergent technology, and cultural production. Led by 16 faculty members from the Art Foundation, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Interior Design, Fashion Design, VCUarts Qatar Libraries, and Graduate Studies de- partments, the labs support initiatives ad- dressing a broad range of topics and issues including graphic publishing, product devel- opment, sound design, emergent media, ad- vancing pedagogies, and nanotechnology. In 2021, initiatives supported within the Research Labs include Boost Lab,X-Labs, Sonic Jeel, DAT Lab, water with water (W/W/W), TypeAraby , Multi-Modal Mathematics, and Nanotechnology and Textiles Lab. These in- cubators support and cultivate collaborative, cross-disciplinary partnerships both within and outside of the University, with significant potential for impactful outcomes and contri- butions in the wider community.

The Labs When it comes to incorporating interdisciplinary approaches in education, the merging of seem- ingly disparate fields can often lead to positive results. Inthis regard, Multi-ModalMathematics is a research initiative that fuses mathematics with creative writing, and art and design, bringing together scholars, practitioners and educators to examine the potential ofmultimodal storytelling as an active element of science, tech- nology, engineering andmathematics education, andmore specifically inmathematics education. The initiative's lead investigators Dr. Summer Bateiha, Associate Professor, Mathematics, and Sadia Mir, Associate Professor, English, from theDepartment of Liberal Arts &Sciences, and Law Alsobrook, Associate Professor, Graphic Design, envision a space where diverse areas of interest and inquiry such as mathematics peda- gogy, creativewriting and storytelling, aswell as art and design practices, can converge, build and play off one another for inspiration, collaboration and research advancement. “As mathematics does not typically captivate many students emotionally, through this research lab, we aim to engage local middle school teachers in the creation of non-traditional math- ematics curricula that can appeal to a wider audience. We plan to use local culture, storytelling, interesting graphics, and hands-on activities to create an interdisciplinary experience for students.”

تدرس مختبرات إكس الأشكال المتقدمة للتصنيع داخل التصميم الحسابي. بقيادة ليفاي هامت، أستاذ مشارك تصميم الغرافيك، و كر يس بوكويسكي منسق مختبر التصنيع الرقمي وورشة الخشب، ومحمد سليمان، والدكتور هيثم الحمالي، الأستاذان المساعدان في التصميم الداخلي. تعمل مختبرات إكس على ز يادة الوعي بالترميز والتصميم بالخوارزميات بين الطلاب وأعضاء الهيئة التدر يسية، ودعم التعليم باستخدام الحاسوب وتطوير المناهج الدراسية. طورت المبادرة أدوات جديدة لإنشاء تصميم يعتمد على البيانات من خلال كتابة رمز مخصص، واستخدام موارد الذكاء الاصطناعي الحالية. قامت مختبرات إكس أيضًا بتصميم وإنشاء ثلاثة روبوتات طباعة كبيرة الحجم وتصميم مقرر ين جديدين وإضافتهم إلى مناهج التصميم الداخلي وتصميم الغرافيك سيعملان على تعر يف الطلاب على هذه المصادر المبتكرة. كما تعمل مختبرات إكس حاليا و بالتعاون مع طلاب تصميم الغرافيك في المقرر الاختياري على استكشاف تقنيات الطباعة المبتكرة باستخدام Type+Code الحساب والمواد التقليدية. مبادرة بحثية أخرى، مختبر دات، وهو عبارة عن منصة تستكشف العمليات والتجارب التفاعلية والناشئة باستخدام علم دراسة وظائف الأعضاء البشرية والأجهزة الحيوية مع التكنولوجيا لتحويل البيانات إلى ابتكار العديد من الأشكال المركبة. بإدارة جوشوا رودنبرغ، الأستاذ المساعد ومدير استوديو الوسائل المبتكرة، مكتبات الجامعة، يبحث مختبر دات في معالجة البيانات المرئية والسمعية من خلال التجربة العملية.
