RECAPTURING THE WARM TOGETHERNESS OF CHRISTMAS What Are Your Favorite Christmas Memories?

When I think back on the Christmas holidays I enjoyed as a kid, and even think about the ones I enjoy now, I don’t think any of our traditions have been particularly unique. However, at least for me, that doesn’t make those memories and traditions any less special. When I was a kid, our Christmas Day traditions would start on Christmas Eve. My parents and I would make our way over to my dad’s parents’ house, where we would gather with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins. I don’t think this still

exists today, but a big part of Christmas Eve for us kids back in the 1960s and 1970s was turning on the radio and listening to a program that would let us know where in the world Santa was at that point in time. When you’re young enough to believe in Santa, those updates are really important — they let you know when you needed to get to sleep! As the radio gave us kids updates on Kris Kringle’s latest whereabouts, our grandparents usually gave each of us a toy, and then we would stuff our faces full of Christmas cookies. At around 10 or 11 p.m., my parents would take us all to see my other uncle (my mom’s brother) and do it again with a different set of cousins until it was time to go to sleep. Then, I would wake up in my bed on Christmas morning, ready to see what Santa brought me. Those were really good times, and like most family traditions I enjoyed as a kid, I didn’t truly appreciate them until they were gone. That warm feeling of togetherness was the real present. So, even though we all grew up, scattered across the country, and started new families and traditions of our own, I’ve always tried to capture that feeling every Christmas. If you were to come to my house on Christmas Eve now, you wouldn’t hear the radio broadcasting Santa’s current

location — I don’t even think they do that anymore! However, you’d probably find me and my family relaxing and watching one of our favorite classic Christmas movies. In my opinion, you can’t find better Yuletide entertainment than “Christmas Vacation,” “A Christmas Story,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” or “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I hope all of you are able to find some way to capture those warm Christmas feelings with your family as well, whatever shape that takes. Then, if you find that all the Christmas cookies and eggnog have added a few pounds, the best gift you can give yourself might be one of our amazing services here at Cool Renew MedSpa. Whether you want to try CoolSculpting to freeze away that pesky, hard-to-get-rid-of belly fat, or you want to try and tone up your ab muscles with our Emsculpting treatment, we can give you the gift of looking better and feeling better about yourself. You can also feel free to try one of our other services, including the new Emsella, microneedling, laser hair removal, or hydrafacials. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Boost Your Immune System Like a Celebrity WITH THESE 3 HOT WINTER DRINKS

What do Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Khloé Kardashian have in common? Yes, they’re all high-profile celebrities, of course, but they’re also big fans of hot tea. According to the entertainment website Yaay, Angelina Jolie likes to make her own garlic tea by steeping fresh cloves in hot water, and Lady Gaga is such a big tea lover that she takes a tea set with her on tour. These famous women might be onto a health and beauty secret because aside from being delicious, tea is a great way to boost your immune system and fend off illnesses.

raises the immune system, and may even help fight cancer. You can make lemon-ginger syrup by layering lemon slices, fresh ginger, and raw honey in a jar and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. The next morning, just add a few spoonfuls of the concoction to your hot water and you’ll have instant tea! Homemade chai tea is another delicious option that will wow you and your guests this winter. There are thousands of chai recipes out there, but MinimalistBaker.com offers a simple and tasty one that’s made with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, black tea, pepper, and dairy-free milk. If you don’t want to grind the spices yourself, you can buy a premade blend. Chai gives you all of the ginger benefits with the added bonus of cardamom, which is said to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Last but not least, if you’re more of a latte drinker than a tea drinker, try golden milk ! This soothing drink is a darling of health food fanatics because it features honey (a disease-fighting powerhouse ingredient) and turmeric (an immune-booster that lowers cholesterol, combats arthritis, and helps prevent cancer). WellPlated.com offers a delicious recipe that pairs those two ingredients with almond milk, almond butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger for a satisfying nightcap.

Drinking hot tea, or another immune- boosting drink in place of hot chocolate, will still give you the cozy winter vibes you crave without compromising your health. An easy drink for beginners is lemon-ginger tea , which is a spin- off of Khloé Kardashian’s favorite drink. Ginger is a key ingredient here because it’s anti-inflammatory,

If you read last month’s newsletter, you’ll remember that we highlighted our newest health and wellness tech, the Emsella. In case you missed the last edition or you just need us to refresh your memory, we shared the story of Mary (we did not use the client’s real name to maintain her privacy), who was dealing with severe incontinence, to the point where almost every 15 minutes, she had to urinate. But, with the help of Emsella, she was able to take back control of her life from her bladder. The Emsella is a noninvasive method that can help you manage and heal your incontinence. It works similarly to our Emsculpt technology in that it uses electromagnetic energy to cause your pelvic floor muscles to contract. The pelvic floor muscles make up the muscle group that helps you control your bladder, and causing them to contract strengthens those muscles so you won’t feel like you have to go to the bathroom so often. This month, we wanted to share another success story regarding a patient of ours whose incontinence was cured with the help of the Emsella. The primary difference between this patient and the previous patient we highlighted is that this patient is a 70-year-old man. At the time, he was our newest patient, visiting our office for a different procedure. However, while we were working with him, he told us that he had had a prostatectomy years ago. One of the unfortunate side effects of a prostatectomy is a loss of bladder control, and because of this, our patient has had to wear Depends for years. When he told us this, we recommended he try the Emsella, and he agreed to give it a shot. After just three treatments, he was already noticing positive effects — and he wasn’t even done with his treatments! We’re thrilled that Emsella is working so well to help people heal from such an uncomfortable problem and hope to have more success stories in the future.

COMMON DIET AND NUTRITION MYTHS

We Need to Shed

In a world where we’re barraged with diet and exercise tips constantly, are we really surprised that many are not exactly true? Thinking critically about the diet and exercise tips we read about is important, but sometimes myths about these subjects become so ingrained in popular culture that we have to actively discredit them. Here are a few diet and nutrition myths you should shed from your mind right now. EATING SMALLER MEALS EVERY 2–3 HOURS IS HEALTHIER FOR YOU. Some sources have claimed that eating five or six smaller meals per day, rather than eating three larger meals, will help you lose weight, but other studies suggest this method doesn’t make a meaningful difference to your weight or overall health. Plus, it’s just inconvenient to eat that often. Instead, just eat when you feel hungry and choose something nutritious to munch on. ‘ORGANIC’ AND ‘GLUTEN-FREE’ ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH ‘HEALTHY.’ Entire menus and restaurants have been founded on the “organic” and “gluten-free” crazes. But junk food is just as easy to make with organic ingredients, and gluten-free processed foods can be just as bad for you because they probably contain other harmful ingredients to make up for the lack of gluten. Plus, gluten isn’t healthy or unhealthy unless you have celiac disease or other medical conditions associated with gluten.

BECOMING HEALTHIER IS ALL ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT. Many times, we focus our journey toward healthier living solely on losing weight. While weight loss can certainly be a part of being healthier, it’s usually just one piece of the puzzle. People with healthy body weights can have the same metabolic problems as someone who is obese, and someone who is obese can be metabolically healthy. To truly work toward a healthier lifestyle, focus on your whole metabolic health, which includes blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and other factors, not just your weight. As you begin to tackle your New Year’s resolutions, remember to do your research and make sure your fitness and nutrition goals are worth achieving and not the product of popular myths!

How to Eat (Responsibly) During the Holidays

WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOUR FAVORITE FOODS OR YOUR WAISTLINE How to Eat During the Holidays

Have you ever stood on a scale at the end of the holiday season and wondered how the extra pounds crept on? It’s no secret that a sugar cookie here, a slice of pie there, and a few glasses of eggnog in between can lead to a few pounds gained. When you’re surrounded by Christmas goodies, how can you resist? Luckily, there are a few ways you can protect your waistline this holiday season without completely cutting out your favorite treats. BE CHOOSY When you see a regular buffet of your favorite holiday treats, don’t immediately start scarfing down everything that looks remotely tasty and sweet. First, scope out the food — without a plate — so you won’t be

tempted to start eating without really looking. Then, find the treats that are your absolute favorites and choose one or two of them to eat. You don’t have to give up sweets during the holidays; instead, eat with discretion. DON’T GO HUNGRY To ensure that you don’t overeat at a party or buy junk food that you don’t need when shopping, eat a healthy snack before going out. Before you head out to a party, eat a snack chock-full of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and unsaturated fats. Apple slices with peanut butter work, as well as lean meats and cheeses. If you’re headed to the grocery store, eating a filling snack before you go will make you less likely to impulsively scoop up those sugary cookies and pastries in the bakery. DRINK RESPONSIBLY (AND JUDICIOUSLY) If you drink alcohol, keep in mind that each drink will probably be somewhere between 150–225 calories. A glass of eggnog can have as many as 500 calories. Alcohol decreases your self-control when you’re eating, while also increasing your appetite. Make sure that if you’re drinking, you’re not doing so on an empty stomach. And to decrease the number of high-calorie drinks that you consume, drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages. The holidays are a minefield for any healthy diet. But with the right tools, you can ensure that by Jan. 2, your waistline won’t be worse for wear.
