Cornerstone PT Patients

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

WHAT I LOOK FORWARD TO THIS SEASON THE GIFT OF QUALITY TIME

DOROTHEA CATENA

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred will be entered to Win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

Last month, I mentioned how our family manages to fit in two Thanksgiving meals every year. Well, the truth is, turkey day isn’t the only holiday where this happens. Most celebrations involving food usually end up being a double feature for us these days, making this season especially filling — we all have our work cut out for us when the new year starts. In fact, Christmas has basically become a week-long affair at this point. After going to church on Christmas Eve, we go have dinner at my wife’s aunt’s house. Then on the big day itself, we visit my mother before returning home to host my mother- and sister-in-law. Some days later, we’ll visit my wife’s cousin and their kids. And, of course, each of these stops has great food and even better company. Part of the reason we drag out the celebrations so long is that we really want to make sure we visit with everyone. It’s exhausting to have a rushed Christmas running around, seeing each and every person, or trying to cram everyone together in one place. I prefer having the time to sit, relax, and talk with loved ones. I can tell my kids like that better, too. My wife’s cousin’s kids are around the same age as my daughter, and it’s interesting to see how their conversations have evolved over the years. They used to talk about toys and cartoons, but now that they’ve grown and matured more, they talk about school, sports, and their plans for the future. Time sure does fly.

I still remember when our clinic was in its first years of operation — and my daughter wasn’t that much older herself. On Fridays, I’d go pick her up from kindergarten and bring her back to the office with me. She’d walk around the office and meet patients, some of whom may remember those old days. While both my daughter and the clinic have grown since then, I’m glad to say how we care for our patients has stayed the same. In fact, it’s similar to how my family approaches the holidays. Even before I started my own practice, spending time with patients was always important to me. After all, how can you really help someone if you don’t take the time to get to know them? So, when Cornerstone Physical Therapy Health and Wellness Center opened its doors nearly 14 years ago, that principle was foundational to our success. All this time later, it hasn’t failed yet. Treating folks around this time of year is especially great because I get to hear about your own holiday feats. Those who have been my patients for a long time know I always love to chat about food — it’s one of those core things that brings people together from all walks of life. Plus, I’ve gotten some really great recipes and restaurant recommendations from these chats over the years. So, I hope you have some great meals and family gatherings this season. From our family to yours, Happy Holidays! –David DeLaFuente

Thank You!

“Dave and the entire Cornerstone staff were exceptional. I had great difficulty sleeping due to pain in my jaw and subsequent headaches. Now, I have minimal sleep disturbances and fewer headaches. I would highly recommend anyone with movement and pain concerns to Cornerstone. You won’t be disappointed!” –Erin C.

Running in a Winter Wonderland Tips for Running and Jogging in Cold Weather

Maybe you love the majesty of a winter’s morning, or maybe you just hate the treadmill. Whatever your reason is for wanting to run or jog outside in the dead of winter, remember to take the proper precautions before stepping out. Runners face challenges during the winter that they don’t face any other time of year. If you want to experience the winter safely, there are a few things to keep in mind. WARM UP INSIDE FIRST. If you’re planning on braving the snow and frigid temperatures, try to spend 10–15 minutes warming up before you walk out your front door. Cold weather naturally tightens muscles and joints, so stretching your limbs in a heated environment is a good way to ensure maximum comfort and minimum risk of injury when you’re running in the cold. WEAR SHOES WITH TRACTION. If your favorite running path is covered with snow and ice, you should consider finding a different route. But, if you can’t resist going down your beaten path, then you need to make sure your shoes are up to the challenge. If your running shoes have worn soles, then you’ll need to get a new pair with soles that will grip the ground better before stepping out on the ice. Regardless of how amazing your shoes are, remain vigilant about where you’re stepping. DRESS DOWN A LAYER. Yes, it is cold outside, but your body will naturally warm up as you run, just like it would with any other physical activity. Think of what you would normally wear to stay comfortable in the cold, and then wear one less layer when you’re running. Of course, you should keep other weather elements in mind as well, such as wind, rain, and snow, when you’re picking out your running clothes. Finally, if a day is particularly cold, snowy, or windy, don’t force yourself outside for the sake of your health. Sometimes, a good bowl of soup and a roaring fire can be just as physically satisfying as a run outside.

“My experience with Dave was excellent! Before coming here, I had significant pain in my jaw, neck, and back that I felt almost constantly. Eating had become painful. Now my pain is significantly less frequent and much more minimal in intensity. I am very grateful!”

RELIEF FOR WINTER PAIN The Gift of Laser Therapy

As much as the holiday season can be about joy and togetherness, the weather can make it very uncomfortable. This is especially true if you are suffering from existing joint or muscle pain. Even if it’s an old injury, the cold weather can revive backaches and pains that seemed to be gone for good. If you’re living with pain and immobility this winter, we have something that will warm your spirits.

DEEP TISSUE LASER THERAPY

RESULTS

If you’ve read anything about our newest pain relief treatment, you’ll know it’s fast, effective, and noninvasive. In fact, the only real side effect is a warm sensation on the area under the laser’s light — something that can be especially relaxing this time of year! But, more than just warming and relaxing your muscles, our Class IV Light Force treatment helps your body help itself!

This safe, FDA-cleared treatment is fast and effective. In fact, most patients see results in three to five short treatments. Because it simply uses light to stimulate your body’s natural processes, it doesn’t have the harmful or long-lasting side effects of painkillers or surgery. It’s noninvasive and can treat a wide variety of conditions, including sore muscles and chronic pain. So, if you’re living with discomfort this holiday season, please reach out to us. Even if laser treatment isn’t right for you, our team can help you find the relief you deserve. Give yourself the gift of good health before the new year starts! Give us a call at 732-499-4540.

HOW IT WORKS

Deep tissue laser therapy energizes your body on the molecular level. Cells, especially those in our muscles, have little “powerhouses” called mitochondria, which can be stimulated by light. The laser focuses light rays to reach deeply into your muscle tissue, where they “charge” these microscopic batteries. With this extra boost, your body can more effectively relieve pain and heal damaged tissue. It’s as simple as that!

Yurts: Glamping at Its Finest

Yurt Sweet Yurt

GLAMPING IN BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS

SPRUCE HOLE YURT, COLORADO Nestled in the San Juan Mountains about 10 miles north of New Mexico, this yurt is a snow-lover’s paradise. Skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking trails are plentiful in this backcountry location. At the end of a chilly day, come home to comfy beds, cooking supplies, and decor made to feel like you’re camping — but with sturdy walls to keep out the cold. FALLS BROOK YURTS, NEW YORK For the glampers who truly want to get away, hike just under 1 mile into the woods of the Adirondack Mountains to discover rustic yurts beckoning you to cook over a fire or bundle up with a book. At night, the yurt’s domed skylight offers excellent stargazing. For those keen on winter activities, skiing and snowshoeing trails start right outside the front door. In the summer, enjoy hiking, fishing, and swimming.

The allure of the great outdoors calls to many, but pitching a tent and cooking over a fire isn’t for everyone. If that describes you, consider the yurt: a small, permanent structure often outfitted with electricity, plumbing, and other modern amenities. Expertly nestled in remote locations, they provide comforts of home in the midst of nature. Here are just a few around the United States available for rent. TREEBONES RESORT, CALIFORNIA For those new to the glamping scene, this is a great choice for an easy transition. With picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean, the Treebones Resort in Big Sur has an array of spaciously comfortable yurts to choose from. The resort has heated pools, a cozy lodge, and even a sushi bar. About an hour up the coastline, you can find a few shops, restaurants, and art galleries if you decide you’ve gotten your dose of nature for the day.
