CELEBRATING THE BEST DAD I KNOW Braids and Baked Goods Tooth Be Told www.elizabethdulingdmd.com 256.534.1475
With Father’s Day coming up, I want to take a moment to celebrate one of the best fathers I have ever known: my husband, Chris.
When I first met Chris, I thought he didn’t like me. Chris is very hard to read if you don’t know him. Sometimes he speaks in a monotone voice, and he is very serious. At the time, his furniture consisted entirely of large plastic storage bins. He was ready to pack up and move at any time. A lot has changed since then. He knows me better than I know myself at times, and when it comes to our daughters, he’s a real mother-hen type.
that. Chris also got her to take a pacifier for the first time that night, which gave me a little bit more free time when she was little.
We have three girls: Beatrice, Rowan, and Laurel. Chris is the sweetest daddy in the world. He does so much for our girls. For years,
when he worked long hours in the Army, Chris wanted to put the girls to bed every night because he wouldn’t get home until bedtime and that was the only time he got to see them. Chris is a loving, supportive father and husband. He has always looked for ways to help me and our girls. For example, Rowan cried a lot after she was born, and she only wanted me to comfort her. One night when she was crying even more than usual and I tried everything to get her to calm down, Chris made me give her over. He took Rowan upstairs where he turned on a loud fan and developed a special way of rocking her that would get her to fall asleep every time after
Today, he still finds new ways to make our daughters happy. Our oldest daughter, Bea, loves watching baking shows. She always wants to bake what she sees them making on TV. I hate baking, so I’m thankful Chris stepped in to bake with the girls. He loves it! He and Bea bake together all the time, and they even take orders! This past year, Chris made a watermelon-shaped cake for Laurel’s birthday. I helped with decorating a little, but Chris made it happen. It was so amazing. Chris is truly the best, sweetest daddy to our girls. He braids their hair, builds slip-and-slides for them, treats them like little princesses, and is always looking out for our family. When I’ve gone on medical missions to Honduras, he supported me and took care of the girls while I was away. Chris doesn’t like being praised for taking care of the girls, because he says a father should always be able to take care of his children. While this is true, I still like to remind him how wonderful he is. He works hard and deserves to hear it. There’s no question that Chris will always be there for our daughters and that they’ll be able to count on him for anything.
“Chris is the sweetest daddy in the world. He does so much for our girls.”

ROLL THE DICE ON FUN
Turn Family Game Night Into a Real Adventure
Become Super: Masks
Has Monopoly caused one too many fights? Are you tired of stockpiling resources in Settlers of Catan? Maybe it’s time to introduce your family to a new kind of game, one where you control the story and a single roll of the dice can change everything. This is the world of tabletop role-playing games (RPGs), where players embark on epic adventures under the supervision of a central Game Master. There are a lot of RPGs out there to choose from; here are a few your whole family can get into. The first. The biggest. The king of tabletop RPGs. Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) has been around since 1974, though shows like “Community” and “Stranger Things” have only recently helped the fantasy game gain mainstream acclaim. There are a lot of rules involved in the gameplay, so D&D can seem overwhelming to new players. But once you become familiar with the game, there are limitless options for characters and quests. How will a human fighter, an elf wizard, and a dwarf cleric save the world? Roll the dice and find out. Go On a Quest: Dungeons and Dragons
If your family has ever had a long conversation about who would win in a fight between the Hulk and Superman, then Masks is the RPG for you. Fly into Halcyon City where your family can take on the role of a team of young superheroes. Create your own hero and work together to make the world a better place. Fight supervillains, rescue citizens, and ultimately determine who has the best superpower.
Solve a Mystery: Bubblegumshoe
Did you grow up reading “Nancy Drew”? Are your kids all about BBC’s “Sherlock”? Then Bubblegumshoe is the game for you. This teen sleuth adventure is geared toward younger players, so it’s easier to start than other games on this list. Don’t worry if you’re not a mystery writer; the game comes with prewritten stories for your brilliant characters to solve. The villain might have gotten away with it if it weren’t for your meddling kids!
What are you waiting for? Grab some dice and get the party started!
BIRD
Cove Family Dentistry wanted to be in a great location for our patients. It just so happens that we’re also in a great location for birds! All day, we’re able to look out our office windows and spot many different species of birds. This month, we’re watching hummingbirds. Many different beautiful birds can be spotted around the office, but a fond favorite is certainly our hummingbirds. The unique design of their wings makes hummingbirds the only birds that can fly backward, which is part of what makes their tiny aerial dance so enchanting. Did you know a flock of hummingbirds is called a charm, a shimmer, a glittering, or a tune? Many patients are able to watch the charm of hummingbirds zoom around the feeders outside our office while they’re being treated. Hummingbirds can consume double their body weight in nectar in a single day. Considering the average weight of a hummingbird is less than a nickel, that’s not much nectar. Speaking of which, contrary to popular belief, leaving hummingbird feeders up too long in the fall won’t cause hummingbirds to overstay their visit and suffer when the cold winter sets in. Hummingbirds are the smallest migrating bird, and they’ll migrate on time with or without feeders. While they don’t migrate in groups, hummingbirds can travel alone for up to 500 miles at a time. There are many different breeds of hummingbird, though here in Alabama, you’re most likely to spot ruby-throated hummingbirds or blue-throated hummingbirds. If you’re hoping to attract these dazzling little birds to your backyard, keep in mind that hummingbirds have no sense of smell. However, they do have great color vision. Make your yard an ideal hummingbird destination by planting red and orange flowers or by hanging a red feeder. THE CHARMING HUMMINGBIRD

THE LUXURY OF SAME-DAY CROWNS
No. 1 Dad Hash Browns
Inspired by Bon Appétit
The dental crown is one of dentistry’s greatest weapons. Basically, crowns or caps are designed to look like a natural tooth and cover the entire part of the tooth above the gumline. Crowns have been essential for fixing damaged teeth since being introduced in the 1960s. Your dentist may recommend a crown when a cavity is too large for a filling, a tooth is cracked or weakened. Crowns are a staple of modern dentistry. Thankfully, we have cutting-edge dental technology that allows us to offer our patients same-day crowns. No more goopy molds. We’re able to create same-day crowns thanks to the technology available in our office. Instead of gagging on dental putty to make an impression of the damaged tooth, a program takes a 3D scan quickly, comfortably, and accurately. Forget the temporary. Before this technology, patients had to struggle with temporary crowns while their permanent crown was being made in a lab. This meant they had to avoid certain hard, sticky foods, and chew on the other side for a few weeks. There was always the worry that the temporary crown would break or come off at an inopportune time. Same-day crowns eliminated the need for temporaries. Spend less time at the dentist. Same-day crowns could also be called “1-visit crowns.” We’re able to take scans, create the new crown, and fit it all in one appointment. Patients don’t have to take more time off work or away from their families for an extra visit to have their temporary crown replaced with the permanent solution. We are proud to provide same-day crowns to patients who need them. We’re currently the only dentist in the area with this technology in-office. If you suspect you may need a crown and wish to get your tooth taken care of quickly, give us a call at 256.534.1475. BENEFITS OF SAME-DAY CROWNS
INGREDIENTS
• • • • • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, or 6 tbsp ghee 3 russet potatoes (about 1/2 lb.), peeled 1 tsp Kosher salt, plus more to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Pinch of cayenne pepper, plus more to taste 1. In a small saucepan, heat butter over medium heat until foamy. Reduce heat if needed to avoid browning. Skim off white milk solids to make clarified butter (ghee). Transfer to a bowl and reserve. (This step won’t be needed if using ghee.) 2. Using the large holes on a box grater, grate potatoes. Transfer to a large bowl of cold water and stir until water becomes cloudy. Rinse potatoes under cold water, then squeeze out liquid using cheesecloth or a kitchen towel, removing as much moisture as possible. Season potatoes. 3. In a large nonstick skillet, heat butter (or ghee) to medium-high. Add potatoes and cook until a crust forms underneath, about 5 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, break up potatoes and continue to cook, adding more butter (or ghee) if potatoes begin to stick. 4. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels; season with salt, pepper, and cayenne to taste. Serve. DIRECTIONS

Exploring the River of No Return
JOURNEY DOWN A RIVER OF NO RETURN The Unspoiled Beauty of Central Idaho There’s more to Idaho than potatoes. Sitting square in the center of the Gem State is one of the largest contiguous areas of protected wilderness in the U.S. While the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area may not roll off the tongue as easy as Yellowstone or Yosemite, this 2 million-acre swath of mountains, gorges, and alpine lakes offers something for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. The name of the wilderness may sound a little ominous at first — who wants to travel down a river of no return? — but in truth, it’s a title from times gone by when canoes and small watercraft could travel down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River swiftly but couldn’t fight the current going back up. Today, those same rapids make the Middle Fork a wildly popular whitewater rafting destination, with plenty of local and out-of- state enthusiasts making a return journey every summer. River of No What, Now?
area, most of which are only accessible by jet boat, light aircraft, or good old-fashioned hiking. Some, like the Middle Fork Lodge, offer five-star accommodations, located conveniently close to one of the area’s many natural hot springs. Those with the right permits will find the rivers and lakes full of fishing opportunities, and the surrounding pine forests are teeming with game.
Lodges? I Just Want to Get Away From It All.
For those looking for a truly unplugged experience, backpacking to the many campsites scattered throughout the region can be an incredible journey. If you spend a night beside the crystal-clear waters of Langer Lake, hundreds of miles away from any light pollution, you’ll find peace, quiet, and a sky bursting with stars. If you’ve ever wanted to experience a truly untamed part of the United States, Idaho is the hidden gem you’ve been looking for.
Rafting Isn’t for Me. What Else You Got?
If crashing down 300 Class III rapids isn’t your speed, the Frank Church Wilderness has plenty of other ways to enjoy the wild mountain country. There are several lodges that were grandfathered in to the wilderness
