Saying Goodbye to 2020!

Looking Ahead to the New Year

As we look to close this 12th chapter of 2020, I’m focusing on preparing for the next year. Not to completely understate it, but we’ve had a lot happen this year. From a confusing election to a life-changing pandemic, we spent most of 2020 waiting for the other shoe to drop. What helped me get through it all was knowing that I wasn’t alone. We were all fighting this same battle together, each with our own unique set of circumstances but each affected by the same thing all at once. Personally, this year was more difficult than others for a distinct reason. About six years ago, my father, Russell, was diagnosed with respiratory problems and given five years at most to live. As we headed into 2020 this past January, Dad was defying the odds and heading into year six of his diagnosis. We were grateful but cautious, especially as COVID-19 hit the nation. In May 2020, Dad passed away surrounded by his family and in his home — just the way he wanted. We were able to keep him safe in those final months and free of COVID-19, too. Dad was a jack-of-all-trades, a hardworking man who had his own oddities but was especially proud of his grandson and great-grandson. He loved all of his grandchildren, but he

had a soft place in his heart for his great-grandson, my own grandson.

We all knew his passing was coming, but it certainly didn’t make it any easier. I’ve found that there are moments that I’d love to bounce some ideas off of him but I can’t. That’s just the kind of dad he was. I’m grateful to have known him, and he will certainly be missed. As my family and I coped with that loss this year, the world unhinged, and we just kept plugging away day by day. Everyone was just trying to figure out what to do, but I believe this year provided us with a valuable lesson. I’ve become more appreciative of the people I have in my life, and I’ve learned how to take it just one day at a time. In preparing for the new year, I’ve found that there are plenty of things we can control. In my business, I’m trying to find more economies of scale so that I can run the firm more efficiently and use my resources more wisely. I’ve been researching new systems and procedures to ensure I’m providing the best possible service that I can. If you’re struggling to plan for 2021, I suggest you start by asking how you can improve your processes. How can you get more creative with your marketing and better target the people you need to hit? Finding ways to improve doesn’t have to involve

reinventing the wheel. As we all learned in 2020, we’ll have to take the next year as it comes, but focusing on what we can do better and control is the best way to get the most out of each day. This past year may not have been the year any of us expected. The loss of my father was something we knew would happen soon, but I never thought it would happen in the middle of a pandemic. That’s not something we could have planned for, but we made the most out of it. As with everything this year, we learned the value of appreciating what we have, controlling what we can, and letting go of what we cannot.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very safe and happy holiday season!
