PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As I approach the end of my 3 years as President of Wilmington Country Club, I’m pleased to report that the state of our Club is very good. At the beginning of my term in January 2015, we had just finished completing and occupying the biggest Clubhouse renovation and addition in our history. Over these past 3 years, we have retired our 1.7 million dollar line of credit while putting around 1 million dollars each year into capital improvements. We also in the past 2 years have been able to renovate and update both the Ladies’ and Men’s Locker Room wet areas and carpeting. Despite all this, we are projected to have saved over half a million dollars for future projects by the end of 2017. Having recently hostedThe Alliance of Clubs, I can tell you that we are in an envious position to have the facilities we do and no debt. All this, as I’m sure you are aware, doesn’t happen by accident. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful General Manager in Phil Iannelli and a great staff whose everyday goal is for us as members to have a wonderful experience every time we visit our Club. I thank them for all they do for us. I have also been very fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic members in leadership positions these past 3 years. This includes all members who have served on committees, the chairs of all our committees, our Past Presidents, the Board of Directors, and certainly the members of the Executive Committee. At times, it has been my role to mainly stay out of the way and let them and their committees lead this Club and they have done a fantastic job. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as President of Wilmington Country Club. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity. I know that with the quality of members in leadership positions, our Club has a very bright future ahead of us. ThankYou. Joseph F. Hacker III President

A NOTE FROM PHIL It seems like just yesterday we were taking down the garland and cleaning up glitter. But, with the precision of a fine Swiss watch, the annual ritual has arrived once again, and with it comes the hectic pace of the season. Accordingly, there is a lot to share, so let’s get to it.
to fill those vacancies from the waiting list. If you have any flexibility in your schedule and would like to participate, we encourage you to add your name to the list. Chances are, you will get a call. There are also a couple of special “Pub” events on the schedule. First, on December 15th, our normal “Happy Hour” will encourage you to dig deep into your closet to break out that truly ugly holiday sweater and wear it with pride! It will even earn you a free beer (or wine)! The second Pub event comes late in the season when, on December 30th, we have a special party to say “goodbye” to the venue that has become so popular. It will close the next night for a “long winter’s nap” and will awake in the spring renovated and even better than before! The Holiday Season culminates with our New Year’s Eve dinners. Just as we did last year, there will be an “early dinner” in the Tavern/Grille - complete with traditional favors and decorations - serving a special limited menu from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm (reservations accepted for all size tables). Café 1901 will also be open for families with our youngest revelers. For those who wish to “dress up”, the Dining Room will feature the same limited menu as the Tavern/Grille but in a more formal environment. Piano music will be provided by Jim Sullivan and some traditional New Year’s favors will add a special atmosphere to a special evening. Reservations are appreciated for this room as well. And let’s not forget that on its final night, the Pub will also be serving your favorites and can be either a great jumping off point or your destination to say goodbye to 2017. Your Club has lots of options to usher in 2018! Also, permit me to remind you of some Holiday schedule adjustments. On Christmas Eve, the Club’s athletic facilities will be open until 3:00 pm when all buildings will be secured. No luncheon service will be offered. The Club will reopen at regular times the morning of the 26th. On New Year’s Day, all athletic facilities will be available regular hours but no Clubhouse food service will be provided nor will the Bag Room be open. Please plan your use accordingly. Finally, let me share the appreciation of our entire staff for your generous contributions to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund. Your gift reaches all employee ranks and is truly significant. On their behalf, we thank you and hope that you and your family have a joyous Holiday Season. If you’re traveling, be safe. If not, I’ll see you at the Club. Phil Iannelli General Manager
Throughout the Holiday Season, casual and formal dining will be offered in all venues. The normal activity of regular membership dining always increases during this
time of the year so it will be extremely important (and helpful) to make reservations for formal dining or for larger tables (five or more) planning to enjoy a casual meal in the Tavern/Grille. Notification of your planned visit will allow us to have a table waiting. Of course, if you are coming from another Holiday party and simply want to stop in, please do.We will always find a way to accommodate you. The Holidays also play host to a multitude of special dining and social experiences for you to enjoy. In addition to your traditional favorites, we have spiced up the calendar with a few new events, and “reimagined” a few others. The season got started pretty early this year when, on November 27th, the decorations went up. In fact, there were several events held before we even turned the calendar to December. Wreaths were made, sales were shopped and wine was sipped! December’s first official event is scheduled for Sunday, December 3rd when we will be introducing an all-new family event where attendees will decorate a personal gingerbread house. Also in the family theme, this year we are blending the Children’s Christmas Party and our ever-popular Holiday Brunch into one spectacular event. On Sunday, December 10th, we will start upstairs with kids activities, holiday crafts and a visit from the “big guy” himself and then transition downstairs to enjoy the wonderful full brunch buffet that has become an annual favorite. Members and their families/guests can participate in either or both aspects of this “reimagined” event. The day promises to be an excellent opportunity to gather as a family, reconnect with friends or entertain guests during the Holidays . . . we hope you will join us! And there is an anniversary to mention - the tradition of our Christmas Candlelight Dinners will celebrate twenty amazing years. To maintain the proper feel of the evening, the event is limited to the formal Dining Room on three consecutive nights, the 19th, 20th and 21st.Although all three nights initially filled, we always get a few last minute cancellations and try

WINES OF THE MONTH For centuries, farmers made offerings in hope for a miracle – as Amalaya translates in the local language – for a bountiful harvest. It is located at 5,900 feet above sea level, in the Calchaquí Valley, in the northwest of Argentina. The region stands out as one of the highest vineyards in the world, characterized by its dry climate with limited rainfall, rocky and sandy soil and significant thermal amplitude. Keith VanYahres Assistant General Manager Amalaya Torrontes “Blanco de Corte”, Valle Calchaqui, Argentina 2016 Glass $8.00/ Bottle $30.00 The AlamayaTorrentes Blanco de Corte hails from theValle Calchaqui, Salta and is composed of 85%Torrontes and 15% Riesling. The shiny gold color gives way to grapefruit and lemon citrus notes on the nose followed by a delicate and silky palate feel with crisp acidity and a distinct mineral note.TheTorrentes Blanco de Corte makes an excellent aperitif and matches well with spicy dishes, pasta and poultry.

In the mouth, flavors of red fruit, spice and hints of vanilla from French oak aging abound with a lingering finish highlighted by soft tannins. The Malbec pairs well with red meat, hearty pasta dishes and pizza.
Segura Viudas Brut Glass $5.50

BOOK CLUB Our December 5th selection, Amor Towles’ novel A Gentleman in Moscow , begins on June 21, 1922, when Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov stood trial in Moscow, accused of fomenting rebellion through poetry. Narrowly spared execution, Count Rostov - wealthy, charming, and in the prime of his life - is instead condemned to life imprisonment in the Metropol Hotel. Forcibly removed from his luxurious suite overlooking the famed Bolshoi Theatre and relocated to cramped quarters in the hotel’s attic, the resolutely cheerful Rostov remains undaunted. As the years and decades pass, Rostov - ever the gentleman, and more important, ever the optimist - shapes a deeply fulfilling life for himself within the confines of the hotel, forging unexpected friendships, performing unexpected work, and finding love and purpose in unexpected places. And though the violence and deprivations of Stalin’s brutal Soviet regime are not ignored, they exist largely in the footnotes of this sparkling novel. Join us on Tuesday, December 5th at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Locker Room as Jill McDonald leads the discussion of this sophisticated, charming novel that you will never want to end. Our January selection is Anita Shreve’s suspenseful novel The Stars are Fire which is set in Maine during the real-life disaster of 1947 when a severe drought caused a series of massive fires that burned out of control for 10 days. Shreve gives her protagonist, twenty-four-year-old Grace Holland, seemingly insurmountable problems and dire situations which she has to confront. Penniless and homeless, she must find the strength and resourcefulness to make a life on her own.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS
ORGANIC MATTER We’ve just received our latest organic matter (OM) test results from Penn State University, for a selected representation of South Course greens. In short, the results below show favorable support for our programs designed to reduce overall organic matter, also known as thatch. To quote from Dr. Andrew McNitt of Penn State University, “The organic matter has decreased in each green compared to September 2016 amounts. It is suggested that organic matter removal practices be continued in order to remove additional organic matter from the rootzone as Turfgrass plants constantly deposit organic matter.”
Our optimum goal for organic matter percentage is a close plus or minus 1%. However, even as we reach this goal, established thatch managements programs must remain a consistent part of our seasonal maintenance plan in order to keep the percentages at the optimal level. To understand how these numbers translate into the playability of the course, especially the greens, we must first understand what organic matter (thatch) is and how it works. Thatch is a mixture of both living and dead grass stems, shoots and roots that build just under the surface of the turfgrass canopy. This constant formation of material occurs as the grass plants continually grow new root and leaf tissue and the old ones die off. Over an extended period of time, microbial activity will break this material down into new soil. Unfortunately, not at a pace needed to sustain quality putting surfaces. A small percentage, 1% to 2% of thatch accumulation is a benefit because it helps the turf hold together when golf balls are hit into it and holds just the right amount of moisture. As the percentages get higher, which means more thatch, the turf holds even more moisture. With softer conditions, the greens become more susceptible to damage from ball marks and foot traffic from golf spikes not to mention the putting surface becomes bumpier and bumpier. As this process of thatch accumulation is constant, how can we effectively control organic matter (thatch)? There are two important strategies dedicated to managing it and its potential negative effects on playability: 1. Dilution- A combination of natural microbial breakdown and the addition of topdressing sand over the surface, working its way down into the thatch layer, allowing firmer and drier conditions. 2. Physical removal- Hollow tine core aeration during Spring and Fall.
20
When both are accomplished on a consistent basis, thatch can be effectively controlled. Club play, tournament calendars, and weather disruptions can make this a difficult task.We can achieve our Dilution goal with frequent lighter sand applications throughout the growing season that limit the disruption to putting quality, as a complement to our heavier applications during aeration. Aeration, although a bit more disruptive due to the length of recovery, is a necessary and important second half of the thatch management process. We make every effort to schedule this process at ideal growing times for the turfgrass in order to shorten the window for recovery and a return to normal playing conditions as soon as possible. As always, we strive to create the best playing conditions possible throughout the entire year. While some of our programs are more intrusive than others, all have a significant benefit to the short term and most importantly, long term quality of turf and playing conditions.
