If you're on the fence about whether to get together in person, know that most experts recommend either canceling such holiday gatherings this year or being extremely cautious if you're having them. "You don't want to take a risk. The price to pay is far, far, far too great," says Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. "I have personally been involved with family situations where sons and daughters came home to celebrate parents or grandparents or be part of some joyous occasion. And somebody ends up in an intensive care unit for days to weeks or dies.". Tips on Safer Holiday Gatherings By Margie Zable Fisher

You don't want to take a risk. The price to pay is far, far, far too great.

Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) suggests considering the potential challenges for everyone who might be gathering. Questions he says that are worth asking: "Will there be people of advanced age? Relatives and friends who have chronic underlying illnesses of note? Will the people attending be on the same page as to how careful they have been? Is everyone's risk tolerance the same?"

This is the season, Schaffner says, where we have to have some honest and trusting conversations.

Options to Traditional In-Person Gatherings While you may not want to gather around your dining room table during the holidays, consider celebrating with family in other ways: gather outdoors if possible, celebrate virtually, or choose a different day or week to celebrate to avoid crowded airports, like our Managing Editor Richard Eisenberg and his family did. Humor in the Time of COVID-19

Humor is healthy for you; that's why we need it now. “It's definitely a coping mechanism and an important part of both mental and physical health," says Paula Poundstone, comedian and host of the podcast "Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone" and panelist on NPR’s “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” Poundstone is right that laughter helps our mental health a great deal — especially during rough times. "The reality is that people need humor all the time. Humor, and the laughter it inspires, is our built-in mechanism for managing stress. It provides relief when times are tough, improves our mood and helps the mind and body calm down," says psychologist and author Brian King. But the act of laughing itself actually changes what's happening inside us. "The primary benefit we receive from laughing is lower levels of stress hormones. When we are stressed, our bodies start cranking out a hormone called cortisol and most of our physiological reaction to stress is brought about by this hormone,” King explains. "Humor, laughter in particular, significantly reduces the presence of cortisol and reduces the physical effects of stress.” With everything she does professionally now virtual, Poundstone says the use of technology has brought its own kind of humor. "We're doing it from our homes. Sometimes we'll record, and it'll turn out that one of us didn't record right. It's stressful, it's aggravating, and I'm not a technical person. There are times that my partners and I are on a conference call and get laughing so hard about this." she says. "And there's such a relief there. I probably have laughed until I've cried more in the last six months than in the rest of my life."

4Ways to Save on Medications in the Pandemic

Millions of Americans are struggling to afford their medications during COVID-19, including some with health insurance, the nearly 27 million who lost coverage due to a job loss and those who never had it. The sticker shock is real. In July, according to the GoodRx site, 67 prescription drug prices rose an average of 3.1%; prices for 857 brand-name and generic drugs increased by an average of 6.8% from January 1 to June 30, 2020. Refills for common medications such as insulin for diabetes and Nexium for heartburn can cost around $300.

1. Pay out-of-pocket (cash prices) instead of co-pays. The out-of-pocket price of medications is usually much lower than the average health insurance co-pay for them. You can save money (often up to 80%) by buying your medications directly from a pharmacy and skipping insurance altogether. 2. Switch to an online pharmacy. Retail pharmacies can mean getting stuck waiting in long lines and risking exposure to COVID-19. Online pharmacies are simpler or more convenient since they ship medications straight to your door. 3. Switch to a 90-day supply. That can be helpful if you're on maintenance medications, such as ones to treat chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, depression or type 2 diabetes 4. Use pharmacy savings cards and online programs. Pharmacy savings cards can offer significant discounts on drug prices at the pharmacy counter. You just show the pharmacist your card (or mobile app) to gain instant savings. A 10-second search could save you hundreds on your next drugstore visit.

Should You Use Your Connections in Your Adult Child’s Job Search?

When our daughter was beginning her post-grad job search, my husband offered to introduce her to some people he knew who might be able to help her. He's worked in finance for over 30 years and thought she might be interested in management consulting. Although she appreciated the offer, our daughter declined. She explained that she wanted to find a job solely on her accomplishments and not through her father's connections. Beth Hendler-Grunt, president of a career consulting firm, says: "Many young people want to pave their own path. They don't want to be reliant on their parents. Young people may think their parents don't know what they are talking about."

But is there anything parents can do to be useful in helping their adult children find work?

Parents can help initially by offering guidance about networking basics. “A parent can say to their child, 'I have a friend who works in your field. Would you like me to connect you?’” says career coach Katherine Akbar. Many young people will be intimidated or uninterested in making the next move. If yours is, let it go; it's their decision.

But if your child is agreeable, make the introduction.

Send an email like this: "As you know, Mary recently graduated college and is interested in a career in (blank). Would you be willing to speak to her about your industry or your role at the company to give her a better sense of the field?" These types of informal conversations can be especially beneficial, providing young people with an insider perspective as they job hunt.

Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page A TWIN CITIES PBS ORIGINAL AMERICAN MASTERS:

I n 2016, American Masters approached Twin Cities PBS to collaborate on a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the much-loved "Little House" books. Why bring the project to Minnesota? Because it was a natural fit. In 1869, when Laura Ingalls was two years old, her parents headed west by covered wagon from Pepin, Wisconsin. Over the next twelve years, the family lived in at least 15 different homes — including log cabins, a dugout and a claim shanty. Wilder would describe this unusual childhood in her books with — some of the most memorable scenes set in Pepin, WI and Walnut Grove, MN. For Twin Cities PBS, the chance to tell this extraordinary story, much of which unfolded in our own back yard, was irresistible. Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page presents an intimate look at this unlikely author. Remarkably, she lived most of her adult life on the Ozarks farm she shared with her husband Almanzo—and published her first book at the age of 65. "Little House in the Big Woods" launched her career as a celebrity writer. Wilder’s "Little House" children’s series would play a pivotal role in mythologizing the American frontier for millions of readers. How did a modest farm woman turn into an icon of children’s literature? Surprisingly, Wilder had a hidden collaborator: her daughter Rose, who pushed her mother to master the art of storytelling. In the documentary, actresses Tess Harper and Amy Brenneman bring their collaboration to life, reading aloud the vivid letters between mother and daughter.

Recently, scholars have been assessing Wilder's legacy in light of her racist depictions of Indigenous and Black people. Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page explores this ongoing reassessment, reveals a more complex picture of an iconic figure in American children's literature, and creates a space for discussions of racism from the past to the present.
