Education Goes Beyond School

My Passion for Learning

“Can your attorney ever be too smart?” When you decide on an attorney to represent you, do you want one who thinks he or she knows everything? Nope, not at all. What you do want is someone who believes in lifelong learning, not only for themselves but also for everyone they work with. After law school, I decided to pursue a master’s in law, and then my MBA, because it became clear to me that if I wanted to start my own practice and run a business, I would need more skills than I possessed. I believe everyone should pursue a formal education in Florida. It’s relatively inexpensive and provides benefits that will never diminish. I also believe that people should pursue their informal education every day. Getting your world view and news from Facebook is not what I’m talking about. With the internet, there is no reason why we can’t locate free information on topics and subjects that inspire us.

Elon Musk claims that, thanks to the internet, a college degree is no longer necessary. Frankly, I couldn’t disagree more. Musk is a smart and gifted person, but the structure of a formal education helps people find their potential and benefits society. College is an opportunity to identify that potential and then eventually synthesize it into a career. When you leave school, you also leave behind the teachers who set the agenda, so it’s really up to you to pursue your future and find alternative ways to continue learning. For example, after 20-plus years of practicing law, my car is a rolling library of audiobooks and programs. The kids hate it, but, I would rather listen to a podcast on a topic I find interesting than listen to the opinion of some talking head who really doesn’t have a clue. I don’t have time to let others think for me. I attend seminars and participate in as many masterminds and marketing groups as I can. If I want to be a better lawyer for my clients, I need to continue pursuing my informal education. One of my fears is dying before I’ve reached my full potential. Obtaining a law degree was the starting point for me. A formal education in law helps you think like a lawyer, but that’s not enough. After law school, the first thing you learn is that you don’t really know anything about the business of law. When you realize that and understand your weaknesses in your

abilities, you have to find new ways to learn to reach your goals.

I have no room for weakness in my life. If I’m the sum of the five people around me, then I want those five people to be able to push me in uncomfortable ways — not because I need to gloat about how great I am, but because what drives me is my passion for helping people. If I’m not doing everything in my power to help my clients, that makes me weak. I can’t sleep at night if I fall short of meeting someone’s expectations. My clients need to see the conviction I have in my eyes and what their cases mean to me. That internal drive is what leads to more education — I need to equip myself to represent their good name at the highest level. I work harder than ever before because I still have a lot to learn.

Stay Safe on the Roads

The summer months mean swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors — not to mention that warm summer sun. But the warmer summer months also bring with them an increase in drunk driving. There are myriad reasons why this happens (people are on vacation, life is more relaxed, and people simply become reckless), but it doesn’t have to happen in such high numbers. And while there are many reasons given for driving while intoxicated, there are zero excuses. It is simply a bad idea to get behind any kind of wheel (boat, car, or otherwise) after you have been drinking.

You can attempt to prevent accidents caused by drunk driving by simply not getting behind the wheel after you have been drinking. But it’s hard to prevent deaths caused by other drunk drivers. You can’t prevent someone else from driving drunk on the same road that you are traveling on. Sadly, many innocent drivers are killed every year by drivers who were intoxicated. However, there is one thing that you can do to keep yourself safe: Try not to travel as much during the popular summer holidays. The most popular summer holidays (the days when drunk driving increases) include the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Staying home and relaxing in the backyard is the safest thing to do. Green Bean and Sesame Salad

Can you believe it? It was 14 years last month that Kathy began working for Dellutri Law Group. Recently, outside of the office, the teammates were laughing, telling old stories of how they came to be at Dellutri Law Group, and sharing some of our funniest memories. For Kathy, she ended up here by chance. She was originally in banking but fell in love with legal work from her 11 years of doing legal research at a bank. Ingredients • 3 cups green beans, ends trimmed • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

• 1 small red onion, finely chopped • Small bunch of fresh mint • Small bunch of flat-leaf parsley • Salt and pepper, to taste

She old-school USPS-mailed a resume to Dellutri Law Group, and as luck would have it, we were hiring! She came in and met the team over at our little building that used to be on Colonial Boulevard. Attorney Amanda Downing was actually the one to interview her. For Kathy, it was the random chance she took that led her to become one of our most longstanding employees. Kathy has been involved in many areas of our office, but today you can find her working on civil litigation cases in our consumer defense department with attorneys David Fineman and Joe LoTempio.

Directions 1. Bring a large saucepan of water to boil; cook green beans for 4–5 minutes; drain well. 2. In a blender, mix finely chopped mint and parsley with olive oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Blend until combined. 3. Add dressing, onion, and sesame seeds to beans. Toss together. Cool dish, then refrigerate until ready to serve.

RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your mind and body. One study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that the quality of your sleep is much more important than the quantity — that is, if you want to feel rested. And we all want to feel rested. So, what can you do to improve the quality of your sleep and get the rest you need? LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. This, above all else, is crucial to a good night’s sleep. Your body knows when it’s time for bed. Generally, you want to go to bed when you feel tired, whether that’s at 8 p.m. or 1 a.m. Whenever your body tells you it needs rest, you should make a habit of going to bed then. The more consistent you are, the better your sleep will be. WAKE UP NATURALLY. Jolting yourself awake with an alarm or radio isn’t doing your brain and body any favors (it can be stressful on the body and even elevate blood pressure, which is not good first thing in the morning). If you do need an alarm, consider a wake-up light. Wake-up lights mimic the sunrise, slowly brightening the room, waking your body in a natural, gentle way.

KICK THE SCREEN HABIT. You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again: Looking at an electronic screen — a TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone — before bed is detrimental to sleep quality. Light from these devices is disruptive to your brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and screen time before bed can throw off normal SCN function. Put your excuses for staying up too late to bed. Say no to “one more episode.” And all those emails? They can wait until tomorrow. Not getting enough quality sleep is harmful to your mental and physical health. When you get into the habit of following these three tips, you’ll find yourself feeling rested and refreshed in no time.
