WOULD NOT LEAVE HIS WATCH The Guardian Who

Hope is something we could all use more of, isn’t it? That’s why we do what we can to give back to our community. While we can’t even begin to make up for what Californians lost last year, we are committed to giving back as much as we can through our business. As we mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we’re committing $500 from every referral we receive to St. Jude’s, with the goal of raising $25,000 total for the research hospital. Something we do for our homeowners every year is ask how they’re doing and see if we can help. Each January, we offer a free check-in. This annual review is a chance to find out how we can make your homeowning experience better. You now own your dream house, but if there is some way we can improve upon it, let us know. What prompted us to start an annual review with our clients? Well, throughout the year we used to get a lot of questions from homeowners. That told us if we’re getting questions from some, others probably have the same queries. We wanted to provide you with an opportunity to ask questions you might not have had time to ask otherwise. We noticed common challenges our homeowners were facing, and often, we’d hear from them after they’d tried to take care of the issue themselves. While we were usually able to help, the problem had generally grown over time.We want to be a proactive resource rather than a reactive one — more of an umbrella than a Band-Aid, I guess you could say. So if you hear from us this month, know we’re just reaching out and checking in.We’ll expect to hear some common real estate questions and look into tasks we might be able to help with. Happy NewYear. May you find hope in the most unexpected places, when you need it most.

After wildfires raged through our state last fall, those of us who call California home experienced a heartbreaking year.Yet, as the stories of tragedy spread, tales of heroic deeds surfaced amidst the destruction. One such story is that of Odin. Odin is a beloved member of the Hendel family. The Hendels lived in the forests of Sonoma County and have a huge heart for animals. Their flock includes eight rescue goats and two dogs, Tessa and Odin, which are both big, white Great Pyrenees — a breed known for being loyal guardians. In mid-October, Roland Hendel awoke in the night to the pungent smell of smoke, a fierce orange sky, and echoing sounds of destruction — urgent warnings from Mother Nature. Gathering everyone as quickly as he could, Roland was able to round up the family members and Tessa, but could not coax Odin from his home. Sitting staunchly next to the eight rescue goats, he would not budge. Try as they might, the Hendels could not get Odin to leave, and there was no room in their car to bring the goats. With the firestorm fast approaching, risking losing more family members with each passing minute, the Hendels made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Odin behind. They made it to safety, certain Odin has suffered a fiery fate beside his goats. After several agonizing days, they were finally able to return to their home and survey the destruction. What did they find? They saw ashes, rubble, their barn and home burned to the ground, all their belongings gone and, miraculously alive, Odin. Weakened, burned, and limping, but still steadfast, Odin had never left their side, even as the fire raged around them. Several deer had also joined the group, apparently seeking shelter in Odin’s paternal presence. Since the home was gone, a kind neighbor offered their barn to Odin and the goats. Today, Odin and his goats are reuinted with their family and are putting their lives back together. Stories like Odin’s remind us even when circumstances are grim, there is still hope to be found.

Because these issues are so common, we created The Turbulence List, and we provide a copy to our clients who open escrow. Here’s the important point:Whether in the air or in escrow, you can relax and depend on your “pilot” to handle that turbulence and get you to your destination successfully.

W HAT THE H ECK A RE T HESE K IDS T ALKING A BOUT ? Vloggers Get Big Bucks on YouTube

BY: DANIELLE DIMARCO Teenager & “2 Cents” Columnist

You may have heard ofYouTube, where people from all over the world can come together to watch a dog and a cat become friends, a toddler covered in peanut butter, and a squirrel riding a mini Jet Ski. But, did you know that there is a whole other side ofYouTube, where adolescents and young adults get paid big bucks to film their day-to-day lives?

tallies up the revenue they make from ads and then splits that profit with the vloggers.Vloggers also make money by getting sponsors and receiving donations from fans. A more popular vlogger, PewDiePie, has over 4 million views on his vlogs, and he’s said to be the most successful vlogger to date, making over $12 million annually for his videos. I don’t know about you, but I’m considering being a vlogger! Except, I actually know the truth: Some vloggers are making a killing, while others aren’t.

Most of the vlogs I watched as research for this article included very simple day- to-day routines that anyone might do. For example, Zoella, a popular vlogger in the YouTube community, films herself putting on her makeup, going to the grocery store, hanging out with friends, etc. Each of her vlogs have anywhere between 800,000 to 1.2 million views, which translates into a lot of money.YouTube pays big stars like Zoella a large sum of money to film and talk to their viewers while taking their dog on a walk or making dinner. Vloggers get paid when they put ads at the beginning of their videos.YouTube

Yes. They are called “vloggers” (video bloggers) or YouTubers, and they film parts of their everyday life and broadcast the footage onYouTube. YouTube has become the Hollywood of the internet. It has created a new type of movie star. However, in this Hollywood, there is no need for extravagance. These new stars entertain audiences by filming themselves running errands, getting ready for the day, or even just eating sushi (which is called a “mukbang,” where they film themselves eating … but that’s a whole other topic).

at first chance. But on her journey to dissociate with her upbringing, Lady Bird discovers another truth: Sacramento is unequivocally part of her. Critics have had overwhelmingly positive things to say about the movie. It’s already received the most positive reviews ever on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast and crew of the movie, too, have rave reviews — for Sacramento. Gerwig says that during filming, crew members began looking at real estate in the area, asking, “Could they commute from Sacramento

Sacramento is our state capital, but most people consider other cities in California to be the echelons of “cool.”You go to San Francisco or LA for good food, Santa Cruz or San Diego for the beach, and any other city in the state for something to do. But one movie is changing the conversation about Sacramento. It’s called “Lady Bird,” and it’s an homage to California’s capital. “Lady Bird” is the directorial debut of Greta Gerwig, a longtime actress and writer. What gives her the street cred to write so nostalgically about Sacramento? She grew up there. Gerwig left her hometown to pursue her dreams in the Big Apple, and in this new movie, she pays tribute to the place that brought her up. The title character comes to a similar awareness. Throughout the movie, she insists she’s fleeing to NewYork

The Holiday Time Forgot

The holidays are over, and you know what that means: no more Christmas carols on the radio! After all, there’s no reason to play carols once Christmas is over, right? Not exactly. You might be surprised to learn “The 12 Days of Christmas” isn’t about the 12 days leading up to Christmas. It’s about the days after Christmas. It all builds up to Jan. 5, a holiday many people have forgotten: Twelfth Night. In certain sects of Christianity, Twelfth Night is the eve of Epiphany (Jan. 6), the day when the three kings — or the three wise men — brought gifts to baby Jesus. During the medieval and Tudor periods of England, Twelfth Night was a massive celebration. Communities gathered together to drink punch, go wassailing — a form of caroling — and feast upon a massive cake with a bean and a pea baked inside. As part of the Twelfth Night tradition, whichever man and woman found the bean or pea would be king and queen for the night. The Twelfth Night cake fit seamlessly with the holiday’s famous theme of role reversal, a nod to the biblical kings who bowed to a baby in a manger. Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “Twelfth Night”was originally intended to be performed on or around Twelfth Night. The play contains many of the topsy-turvy themes of Twelfth Night, such as a woman who dresses as a man and a servant who dreams of becoming a noble. Twelfth Night once marked the end of the holiday season, and it was met with the same enthusiasm as NewYear’s Eve. Interested in reviving the tradition and throwing your own Twelfth Night party? You can find some excellent tips at thedailymeal.com/holidays/how-throw- twelfth-night-party. Will You Celebrate Twelfth Night? While Twelfth Night is no longer a massive revelry, some still celebrate the holiday in England and other European countries. In fact, many modern traditions stem from the old holiday. For example, many people believe you must take down your Christmas decorations by Twelfth Night or risk bad luck.
